He carried Portugal on his back for many years. His egocentric and selfish way has been his strength and his weakness is his way for good and for bad, we are together. @@mrpepperami01 players yes, nothing else. Take out 1966 with Eusebio, we had Figo and the Rui Costa era that won nothing for us. Portugal hardly qualified for major tournaments before the 2000s. You are not Portuguese so you know nothing about the detail of our history. The arrival of Ronaldo is really the arrival of any true success for the national team, for the first time in our history we were qualifying for every major tournament. Ronaldo done this with very poor generations between 06/18, he singled handled dragged Portugal in many many games, from play offs to in tournaments. This generation is the "CR7 affect" generation. Some of the current players grew up has young boys holding frames of Ronaldo in their bedrooms, with the dream of becoming footballers coming from him, too many in our country he created this generation for everything that he represented to our nation. Gazza was barely 23 years old and his booking meant had England beaten W. Germany, he'd have missed a WC final. He also wasn't bawling like Ronaldo. Having said that, Iberians are obviously very passionate and are prone to episodes of heightened emotionalism. We must recognise this and tolerate it.

I think he was crying because he feels he's letting his country down and it's almost all over for him. I love Ronaldo but I can’t believe people are defending this. He cried like the game was over! The game was still very much winnable so it makes you question was he crying for himself or truly for his team? Because when it came to the penalty shoutout and extra half time. He wasn’t being a leader screaming at everyone, telling everyone they can win, he was nonchalant and uninterested. Because he knew regardless of the outcome it wouldn’t be about him. I love his winning mindset. But let’s be honest about the situation

Sad to see. Everyone is so harsh just because hes the captain. Ronaldo has a fantastic heart for his country. These are tears of man dying to bring joy to his country before his has to retire. Top class player, top class man, top class example to all aspiring footballers. The man is human, he was probably devastated missing a pen and almost causing his country to face an exit from the tournament....and then to step up and take the first penalty in the shootout. ❤

Take out 1966 with Eusebio, we had Figo and the Rui Costa era that won nothing for us. Portugal hardly qualified for major tournaments before the 2000s. Our International history was poor. Some of the current players grew up has young boys holding frames of Ronaldo in their bedrooms, with the dream of becoming footballers coming from him, to many people in our country he created this generation for everything that he represented to our nation. Win or lose we are with him, he carried us for too long.

It's a team game & you should want what is best for your country as a collective. Surely Silva or Fernandez should be getting those free kicks, they are both still at their peak. The fact he always pulls rank and it is allowed, i don't see how that is good for the country as a whole. Diogo Costa saved his skin because they could have gone out because of these kind of decisions.

For those who are professional who have a job. You know we got so many issues going on in life but u get to your job and you put aside all your emotions. Anyway we all still human being is hard to analyse the situation without bringing our human nature in the equation. Although we should be professional. But if you guys noticed since the beginning of the game CR7 was emotionally unstable whenever he missed his reaction were just not normal he was overreacting some times.

Ronaldo has been the talisman and leader of that Portugal side. I think he can be forgiven for emotions getting the better of him on one occasion. It’s not like he’s leading a side of youngsters there’s a lot of experience in that squad, and for once it was there turn to pick Ronaldo up off the floor. If anything this will galvanise this Portugal squad, and it certainly showed in the shootout.
