"Old school" is cool school. This still sounds fresh and vibrant 55 years later. In the '60s, teen or 20-something artists made very cool music for other young people. That's why it holds up and doesn't come across as stale.

Classified as Psychedelic Rock this song was released in April 1967. It went Gold (500,000) in the U.S. and as high as 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. We turned it up every time the radio station played it which was often.

On youtube there is a video of Jefferson Airplane on the Dick Clark show singing White Rabbit first then a brief intervew followed by Somebody to Love and another short interview. White Rabbit was loved by hippies and acid heads and Somebody to Love was loved by EVERYONE. It hit a note with anyone that lost love at any time in their lives. Bear in mind this was the 60's. Watch them play and bow to the most poweful natural female voice that ever existed for popular listening. Miss Grace Slick. You've done the reaction so find and watch for yourselves.

Love Jefferson Airplane. A lot of their music feels like it's coming out of some dark dimension that can only be accessed by drugs, It's like the Doors that way. The guitarist for the Airplane is Jorma Kaukonen,a really great blues guitarist. Very unique sound. He and Jack Casady (bass player for the Airplane) went on to form Hot Tuna which is an interesting group, but perhaps not for everyone.

You're diving deep into 'The Summer of Love" (1967) and the hippie Haight-Ashbury, San Francisco scene. This was written by singer Grace Slick's brother-in-law, Darby Slick. Jefferson Airplane also sang Go Ask Alice. It eventually evolved into Jefferson Starship, and then Starship, and had hits in every version. I miss those days. Thanks for playing this.

Grace Slick is such a great vocalist. And if you watch interviews with her from back in the 60s, she was fierceless. And The Jefferson Airplane is like the iconic psychedelic band which any lover of the genre needs to have. Would surely check the band Love too, another iconic psych band from the 60s. Check the song 'Alone Again Or'.

I don't know if album reactions are your thing, but of you ever decide to do one, the Airplane's 1967 album Surrealistic Pillow (from which this song is taken) is definitely one to do. The psychedelic vibe goes through the whole album, even as the band goes from different styles from folk to rock to soul on the individual tracks. And a shout out to the band's original leader and main songwriter Marty Balin.

I used to work with the physically disabled. One of the guys got tickets for an 'oldies' show being recorded as a PBS special. I was chosen to be his escort. We were part of the studio audience. Peter Noone was the MC. From what I was told, I was expecting a show full of doo-wop and 50's groups. After recording some clips for the show introduction with on demand audience applause, the director turned to this bunch of old guys and a young woman setting up on stage, and asked if they wanted to do their set early, since they were already set up. They agreed. After a few minutes Peter Noone steps up to the mike and says, "Ladies and Gentelman, I'd like to introduce a band from the 60's, 70's and 80's... Jefferson Starship!" I couldn't believe what I had just heard. They broke into Somebody to Love, the first song in their set, and I lost it. Grace Slick wasn't there, but the young woman singing was channeling Grace Slick energy. The band was kicking sonic ass. The hair stood up on the back of my neck. I'll never forget the night I got paid to see an iconic band that played at Woodstock.

For Brad's question about electric/acoustic guitars: Jorma Kaukonen was playing lead on an Epiphone Riviera, a thin (shallow) 6-string semi-hollowbody electric guitar he used a lot during the Jefferson Airplane days, and the rhythm parts were played by Paul Kantner on a Rickenbacker 360/12 which was a 12 string electric guitar made famous by George Harrison of The Beatles and Roger McGuinn of The Byrds, and also by Pete Townshend on the 67-68 The Who recordings. It gives a very interesting thick treble-heavy jangly sound that works really well when the amp is distorted a little bit. I do not know what amp setup they were playing through, but I bet if you emailed Mr. Kaukonen, he'd be happy to tell you. "Psychedelic" is pretty much the term for this band. They were one of the inventors of the genre.

All electric guitars here. Jorma's primary guitar in Airplane was the Gibson ES 345. Jorma and Jack (bass genius!) have been together since high school and still play together in Hot Tuna (Jorma now in his 80s and Jack late 70s). Grace Slick was one of the few female lead vocalists in bands of the day, along with Janis, and she could go toe to toe with the guys! Such a powerful voice!! Four lead vocalists in the band, Grace and Marty Balin primarily, with Paul Kantner and Jorma Kaukonen. This is another band with a huge catalog! "Crown of Creation" "3/5 of a Mile in 10 Seconds" (live, from "Bless it's Little Pointed Head") "Eskimo Blue Day" anything from the "Volunteers" album, "The Farm" is a favorite of mine along with "Wooden Ships" "We Can be Together" "Good Shepherd". Fabulous album! The very first Jefferson Starship album, "Blows Against the Empire" is a psychedelic masterpiece and should be consumed entirely and often! Garcia, Crosby, Nash, Billy K, Mickey Hart, Frieberg, etc. are onboard The Starship for blastoff. It's a DO NOT MISS album! Want a great, totally different, sleeper song from Airplane, it's Jorma's finger picking masterpiece "Third Week in The Chelsea"! Jorma and Grace on vocals. Outstanding!

The Airplane were at the very beating heart of the Summer Of Love, hippie, flower power, anti-war, San Francisco 67-68 scene that changed the sound and course of Rock. We were playing some of the same San Fran clubs as them and occasionally sat in onstage with tambourine, maracas or whatever was around. After one concert, some of the band (Jorma, whose guitar you were talking about & the bass player) came over to our band house and I got shockingly wrecked on my first experience of high-octane, Grade A, USDA genuine Rock Star w__d! Oh what a time it was, & Grace Slick & JA were the soundtrack.

But under the name Jefferson Airplane, they had two hits. That's just a fact. Look it up.

Old hard rockers called this kinda guitar sound "jingley-jangley!" It's electric guitar but with a bit of overdrive rather than full on distortion and often played on a semi hollow-body.

Jorma Kaukonen played a hollow body electric guitar (I think a Gibson). That plus those old tube amps gave him that tone. Loved his stuff. I was a big JA fan.

saw the Airplane in Nov 1969 Wilkes Barre Pa Armory. Grace was VERY pregnant with China. The played for 3 or 3 hours, took a break and came back out and played for at least another hour and a half.

The Airplane was the very heart of 60's psychedelia. Much later they bought the corporate ticket to become a superstar group though.

I was there! 20 years old in '68, the SUMMER OF LOVE, LOL! But really, still diggin' the sound from those days. JA can't be divorced from that San Fran scene, the birthplace really of Psychedelia ... and you don't have to be an ACID HEAD to appreciate it .... Keep On Truckin!

They had some great songs - "White Rabbit", "Volunteers", "We Can Be Together", "Come Up the Years", "Martha", "Today" - they were one of the bands at the heart of San Francisco's acid psychedelia era in the late 60s.

Wow just hearing Grace Slick sing someone to love it's almost like hearing it for the first time. What a great group they were back then. There has never been a time when life wasn't tummaltus every generation of Americans have always had to fight a war. Jefferson Airplane was a group that entertained us through the height of the Vietnam War

Brad, just about every company today that builds amplifier’s, tries to replicate those of the early 60’s, however there are exceptions with solid state circuitry. That vintage sound is very important to many bands. When it comes to guitars, there are really no electric guitars that sound like acoustic guitars, so if it sounds like an electric, it most likely is. There are electric acoustic guitars, but they sound like acoustic guitars, just amplified!

Grace Slick is one of my favorite female singers. Some other songs she wrote (her brother-in-law wrote this) and sang lead on are 1) Law Man, 2) Better Lying Down, 3) Eskimo Blue Day, 4) Two Heads (very psychedelic), and 5) Rejoyce.

Lex was clearly born decades late. She has a wonderful, free spirit that would slot right into the sixties without any changes. Brad, on the other hand, is definitely a product of the cynical 21st century.
