This band, this album...being there as a young person in SF during the late '60s- Jefferson Airplane, the Grateful Dead were indigenous to San Francisco. All of the marvelous music that came in to SF was a beautiful gift. But there will always be a special place in my heart for being able to run into Paul Kantner in a grocery store in Pacific Heights...being able to walk to the bandstand at Golden Gate Park for free concerts by the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane, among others. All that is to say that as cynical as one may be, times are always magical-if one is attuned...HA HA!! Be attuned to the magic that is life on Earth!!!

In this heartfelt folk rock ballad, Marty Balin sings about discovering his best self through the love of another. It’s a sentiment that made “Today” (1966) a favorite at wedding and tribute ceremonies. Unlike Jefferson Airplane’s debut album, “Jefferson Airplane Takes off” (1966), which includes several tunes penned by Marty Balin and Paul Kantner, this is the sole lay on “Surrealistic Pillow” (1967) that is credited to both founding members. Balin claimed that he authored “Today” (1967) in order to get to know Tony Bennett and, above all, to offer the song to the elder artist so he could - maybe - interpret and record it❕(AND WHY NOT⁉️) While the Airplane were working in Studio B, the Rolling Stones were in Studio A, and Mr Bennett was in Studio C. Balin and the Stones hanged out and decided they all wanted to meet “the last of the great crooners”*. Their common wish to encounter the legendary performer was not fulfilled, and “Today” remained an Airplane piece. In fact, it ended up being one of their most enduring hits❕ All this shows one fact : on the one hand, celebrities are idols to their fans, but on the other hand, those personalities are fans of their own idols, just like the rest of us‼️ 💚🎶💙 * In 2021, Anthony Dominick Benedetto, a.k.a.Tony Bennett, broke the Guinness World Record for the oldest person to release an album of new material (“Love For Sale”), at the age of 95 years and 60 days❕

I listened to this at some point soon after I separated from my abusive ex. Hearing this was like listening to an echo from a poor fool determined to love someone who was incapable of loving themselves or loving back in any wholesome capacity. I wept for that poor fool, and was free. But that wide-eyed, “anything you want, I swear,” is long, long dead.

Found a job with Pennzoil with a company car, and often at the end of my day, I'd head to a very quiet place by the dunes west of Alkmaar and put both these songs on (cassette tape). It was what helped save my sanity. The wind coming in off the North Sea, blowing through the tall trees and saw grass of the dunes... and these 2 tunes by Jefferson Airplane. They are, and will always be a part of my personal history. God bless 'em for the music!

This guitar riff teminds me of Brazilian 60's sound, we were in serious politics chaos and people went out to the streets to protest but ended up caught by the militaries, so we had just "the promise of a sunny summer" back in the day. All we had left was apathy and that riff captures that, strangely enough.

To say that everytime I hear this song I am a Time Traveler! I'm 75 years old and everytime since I heard this song so long so long ago I'm in love with it! It is so beautiful, it brings tears to my eyes! Even today after all these years and 2 marriages it still leaves me remembering these times! I have never gotten tired of it!💖

Born Dec of 1968 (yes, 8 months before Woodstock fest) i would rather listen to 1960s music than any other time (mostly). I would love to get married to this song.

Why do I live in the 2020 If I find myself in the 60's? It's not that I only belong, I'm whole there. 🌼🌸🌼🌸🌼🌸🌼🌸🌼🌸🌼🌸🌼🌸

What an incredibly simple, but mesmerizing arrangement they did on this song. Anybody know how they mic'd the drums and used other effects to get this drum sound...which sounds like something between thunder and waves crashing on the beach?

I didn't learn about this cover until I watched "the Greatest Beer Run Ever" and I originally became a fan of this song via Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth sampling Tom Scott's version - for the song "They Reminisce Over You" - Jefferson Airplane did a beautiful piece with it

My search said that the song is sung by Grace Slick. She does backup. The lead is Marty Balin.

Paint a picture someday of something that makes you happy. It doesn't matter if you're good or not. Just do it and think of this song when you finish it and look at your quirk.

In the '90s, I was just a kid starting to work, and I remember a lot of my walks around town, I was listening to rock radio on my Walkman, which always played this music, and I loved the feel of the music, and I still love it...
