About the guest: Lucian King Truscott IV (born April 11, 1947) is an American writer and journalist.He is a member of the Monticello Association, the members of which descend from Thomas Jefferson, who was Truscott's great-great-great-great-grandfather. The association owns the graveyard at Monticello. During a November 1998 appearance on the Oprah Winfrey Show he invited descendants of Sally Hemings to the family reunion in 2000. The Hemings descendants had not been allowed to join the association, or to be buried in its graveyard.

He seems to present himself as a bad guy in the sense that he disrespected PBD for no reason, gets defensive and angry when questioned about his opinions (of which he has many), and seems completely uninterested in considering viewpoints he does not already have. Maybe day to day he is different than in this interview, but his disingenuous, argumentative, and arrogant and insulting demeanor here sure does make him look like a bad person.

There are still current-day Uyghur slaves in XinJiang, China, and in India, and Pakistan (total of about 15 million currently in those three countries)? The US eradicated slavery 155 years ago, but it's still going on in these and other places. I'm sure any of those slaves would love to live in the US and be protected by its laws against slavery. The US corrected its horrible mistake and hopefully the rest of the world will eventually outlaw slavery.

What I appreciate is Patrick you always come prepared for interviews, but what makes your interviews so dynamic is info brought out from the other person which gives us a different perspective to make us Think! Pat did an outstanding job of keeping his composure. He's a very skilled interviewer, and it's easy to see why he manages to frequently have guests on his podcast who disagree with him. Unfortunately, some people will simply never be able to help carry a nuanced and engaged conversation with someone who they disagree with. We're seeing a lot more of that today. Hat tip to Mr Bet-David for keeping it classy and still demonstrating respect to his interviewee, despite how cranky she seemed to be with him.

I figured out why he's so angry. He has the ultimate form of "white guilt" because of his ancestry. He has to overcompensate for this guilt by advocating for the deletion of his great ×6 grandfather's accomplishments. The reason he gets so angry is because he has no rational basis for his position and when questioned about it he can't explain it, logically, at least not without envoking the emotion involved with the slavery and racism issue. Anyone who tries to judge the morality of historical figures against the modern version of what is considered to be moral, is an idiot. Patrick made a simple request of him: "you've made these claims. Defend them." Clearly, the guest was not prepared to do so.

Pat even further explained what he meant by saying let me put this in the most technical way possible then he said "moved". You also changed the questions. He asked: What do you think is the greatest country? Do you think the Declaration of Independence has something to do with it? Who wrote the Declaration of Independence? If you are going to critique at least get what was said correct.

When Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence, there were maybe 3 words of it that were recommended for change, which Jefferson agreed with and gladly changed. When he drafted the Constitution, Jefferson sat in Philadelphia while Congress removed entire sections of the document, to include equality for all men, as we would not have had consensus for a Nation otherwise. "Because I say so" is not an argument, and just shuts down any debate of a subject. The writings of Jefferson formed the basis of most modern Governments, and his achievements should not be diminished because slavery existed back then. Truscott's points have no validity, and are in fact one of the main reasons that we have such controversy and strife where there wasn't such before. If someone doesn't like a Memorial to any of our great American Presidents, don't go there. And that certainly doesn't give them the right to "replace" them because they say so. Preserve, Educate, Inspire.

Really? I didn't get that sense at all. This wasn't an interview, it was an interrogation. He didn't ask any questions to actually build conversation. He just asked a progression of 'gotcha' questions, and the old guy was right in pointing out that PBD was mischaracterizing what he said in the article. I don't even agree with the old guy at all about what to do with the Jefferson memorial, but PBD was just being totally obnoxious. I'm glad PBD has improved his interview skills since this video was made.

Great job PBD! Every question asked by you was legitimate. You were responsible and respectful and truthful with your words, it was clear to anyone watching that the person being interviewed was choosing not to fully cooperate, and was well, the complete opposite of how you should be if you want a actual conversation to occur. I am in complete agreement on your stance of adding someone as important as Tubman to be honored, but certainly not at the expense of replacing a founding father.
