Around 1970 or so the Airplane split into two groups. Their guitarist, Jorma Kaukenon and bassist, Jack Casady formed Hot Tuna and Grace Slick and Paul Kantner formed what wound up as Jefferson Starship. Marty Balin rejoined them around 1973 along with guitarist Craig Chacico and bassist Pete Sears and David Freiberg. People came and went in the 70's. In the 80's, Paul Kantner left and took the name Jefferson with him. The rest kept going as Starship. That's the brief version.

I remember hearing that the members of Starship were really conflicted about the radio edit, that cut down the song by almost half, but a shorter, tamer version was the only way to get it played on many radio stations. It eventually went to #3 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Nick & Lex - Congrats to Steve for inviting you to hear Jefferson Airplane/Starship. One of my favorite bands. Steely Dan, Yes, Moody Blues, Tears For Fears Jefferson Airplane/Starship Songs by Jefferson Whatever: Wooden Ships, You're My Best Friend, The Farm, Winds of Change and most of all - anything from the Spitfire album, which not only has great songs (Cruisin, Hot Water, Dance With the Dragon, Song to the Sun , St. Charles, With Your Love) but it also has the best (IMHO) album cover of all time. The Dragon Lady sitting upon her pet! Thanks for being you, Ken PS - Towards the end of the reaction, you compared the song to Earth, Wind and Fire. I would like to help dis-spell that thought. Jefferson Starship were rockers who could also sing ballads. Cruisin, Out of Control, Hey Fredrick, Keep on Dreamin - are all songs that have edge. Craig Chaquico was a rockin guitar player. Ken II

@@MoMoMyPup10 Yeah, and that song wasn't very high on my list, either. I probably changed the channel many times when it started to play. I never hated it, but back then I was in my late teens and 20s I would much rather hear the Who, or ZZ Top, or Led Zeppelin, or... the list goes on. Also, today's youth may not realize how much more expensive music was back then. You either had to buy an album for around $8 which adjusted for inflation is about $30 today, or you had to know somebody who bought the album and would let you borrow it, or you had to know someone who would take 40 minutes of their life to make a copy on cassette for you.

Hi Nick and Alexia, firstly finish watching High Fidelity!! A great movie, adapted for the US market from a novel by British author Nick Hornby. So the book is very British, but well worth reading. I love both book and movie, and watching it reminds me of the time when I had my own CD store in Cape Town. I have to admit there were times when my team and I had to resist being snobby and patronising (like Jack Black's character) to the customers because we thought we knew more about the music than they did! It's not good for business being rude to your customers! Red Octopus was one of the first albums I bought in SA. My favourite track was always the album opener Alexia, 'Fast Buck Freddie'. It has Grace Slick on lead vocals and features Papa John Creach on violin. Unfortunately for me there were no memorable moments listening to 'Miracles' as most girls ran a mile when I plucked up the courage to talk to them! Oh dear! Things did improve eventually thank goodness. But it's a lovely album, much more organic than Airplane before or Starship later. I think I need to declare that the Starship album after 'We Built This City' called No Protection is a guilty pleasure of mine, very late 80's production but killer tunes with vocals shared by Grace and Mickey Thomas. Great choice Stephen.

This album took some getting used to when I first heard it in 1975 (sophomore year of college), because Jefferson Airplane to me had been the most militant SF band, manning the musical barricades of the revolution as it were with "Volunteers" and "We Can Be Together" so Red Octopus was a letdown to me at first as the Airplane selling out. Once I got over that I could appreciate it for what it is...

The season of love! Way to go, Stephen! It was probably just as well that the Mister was talking during the naughty bits, which were, of course, completely absent from most radio transmissions. When ranging over my mind for love songs, I find that it is hard to beat "Nights in White Satin". Their song "The Actor" is pretty darn close. Maybe better. Jefferson Airplane's "Coming Back to Me" is an excellent love song, and was featured in the movie, "Flashback".

The Airplane was *much* more experimental and trippy than the Jefferson Starship/Starship. You should definitely dig more deeply than Somebody To Love and White Rabbit. Anything off of the Surrealistic Pillow (1967) album or Volunteers (1969) would be great, but the albums After Bathing At Baxter's ('67) and Crown of Creation from '68 are also great achievements, though maybe less accessible.

This was probably their best song. Marty Balin at his best. You should really look more into Airplane. Their best known songs are far from their best. “Lather” for instance or “Martha”.

Better use protection because this is a Baby Maker tune

For me, the Jefferson Starship was by far at its best when it featured Grace Slick, Marty Balin and Paul Kantner from the Airplane. The late stuff under the "Starship" name was mostly atrocious, imo.

Great song with a bit of erotic forwardness to shock conservatives out of their skin!My favorite from this era is St. Charles so I hope someone can pay you enough to react to that great tune!

Two of my favorite JS songs are “Miracles” and “Runaway”, but only the radio cuts (like on their greatest hits album). Those versions are 3.5 minutes long. When I hear the original album versions (about twice as long), to me it feels excessively bloated with less energy. (But that is only my opinion.)

Runaway was actually my choice at first for Valentines but at last minute I changed my mind..

The chorus is everything, like wallpaper of my mind as I heard it much growing up. The verses are "meh" to me tho 😊

I feel that Jefferson Airship devolved into a very formulaic group in Jefferson Starship. They lost their soul.

I'm just saying it looks like the dog is moving in time with the music so, something must be right with this track. And my seven beers has nothing to do with it.

Please do yourself and us favor and unsubscribe right now! Most people like what we have to say. If you consider it torture than go take a hike. Why watch a reaction? Listen to the damn song on Spotify then. A quejarse a otro lado papa!
