When Terry Bradshaw, a QB I loved while growing up said "He gave me my job back,I didn't earn it" I gained even more respect for him!
@sportsfisher9677

True, but it is also true that once Bradshaw went back in as the starter, he then earned the right to keep the starting position. Bradshaw was just as great as Gilliam. In a more open-minded time, Gilliam would have been traded to another contender and go on to a HOF career.

It was more than just the drugs that got to him, the racism played a role as well, he was a drop back in the pocket passing quarterback with a quick release and very accurate, couldn't wait to watch those Steelers play back then.

That's one of the things that's never mentioned is how he played as opposed to Bradshaw. Bradshaw even was league leader or 2nd in rushing for a quarterback but what Gilliam didn't have he made up for with passing ability but that's not what was expected of him which Gilliam brings up is their mutual respect for each other's opposing abilities. 2 very talented quarterbacks but what if

He's the main reason I'm a fan of the Steelers to this day (since '72). I liked both the Chiefs and Steelers and had jerseys/logo gear of each. I especially liked the way the Steelers continued fighting on D even if they didn't have a chance of winning back then.

Joe Gilly waa a hell of a QB but he had emotional demons. His dad was a perfectionist tyrant that put a lot of pressure on him. His sister committed suicide. Then he had not only the pressure of making it but the pressure of being a black QB. The hate mail and death threats pushed him over the edge.

@nicksambides2628
@nicksambides2628 Жыл бұрын
One of the sad things about Gilliam is that he put too much pressure on himself. He could have played a lot more conservatively and handed off the ball a lot more. He had a great running game to go to and if he had, he might have kept the job longer. He was barely out of his rookie year when he got the starting job. Maybe nobody could have helped him, done more for him, but somebody should've.

He had all the talent in the world both physically and also around him. Problem was he didn't utilize it. He wouldn't use the running game and defenses quickly figured him out because he kept trying to pass. There are stories that Noll gave it to Joe just to light a fire under Bradshaw's ass (I had heard rumors Art Rooney wanted Bradshaw all along to be the QB not because of race but because he was the #1 pick. I wonder if he pushed Noll on that)

I grew up in Pittsburgh my whole life and Joe didn’t have it easy at all. Joe was a great QB but didn’t get the chances that Terry got. It took Terry years to get it right. Years! Joe got 6 games. It was hard for him to cope and he got hooked on drugs which is not the answer but I empathize and sympathize with him. Honestly I don’t know if I could handled any better.
