The greatest player in the storied history of the Pittsburgh Steelers , "Mean" Joe Greene dominated offenses for over a decade with his unparalleled explosiveness off the line of scrimmage. He racked up ten Pro Bowls in his decade-spanning career, as well multiple Defensive Player of the Year honors en route to four Super Bowl victories in the 1970s. Beyond his individual accolades though, he brought a culture of toughness and physicality to Pittsburgh football, which has lasted long after his retirement, transforming the once pitiful organization into the legendary franchise that it is today.

Well, you can’t deny that they had some other great pieces too. Franco Harris was an all time great along with Jack Lambert and Mel Blount which alone probably would of gotten them the 4 Super Bowls in the 70s

@@ultimatecoasterremakes5500 No.one objective, denys that , but again the primary reason ,the psychological mindset that embodied the unconquerable spirit those SB teams had derived from Joe Greene ,period . He made them believe ,he held them accountable he chastised those who were rebellious he firmly put his foot down literally at times on those who dissented ,his presence impacted the entire team . Bradshaw's biggest vice at times even as a Probowl, All Pro, SB winning QB was his penchant for ints ,Franco is tied with Dorsett for most career fumbles as a RB with 99 , in other words the Steelers were going to turn the ball over in abundance , so that Steelers defense anchored by Joe Greene had to nulify the excessive turnovers the Steelers offense routinely committed .Joe Greene forced every other Steelers front 7 member to have too encounter only one blocker sometimes none ,why ? Because Greene was occupying two blockers ,sometimes three ,he sacrificed individual stats like sacks to improve his teams chances for victory .Inthe storied Vikings purple people defensive scheme in which the Defensive lineman agressively rushed up field attacking the QB first ,Joe Greene would have easily collected 100 QB sacks . Joe Greene was the most important Steelers player during that dynasty run ,and in team history .His teammate Andy Russell stated Joe Greene was the player of the 70's decade , a youtube page on players of the decades during the SB era also stated this . Nuff said .

Is it just me or did he have an uncanny sense of timing at the snap. He gets through in a blur and those who do contest get dealt with through leverage more than brute strength. This is what I gather from the first time watching mean joe green highlights. Very impressive for a man that size as he was clearly dwarfing some of the offensive line. All this from using his name in a rhyme so I said...let's see what the means all about,not disappointed cause his mean ,is nice.

You’re implying Joe Greene wasn’t involved in antics and on field bullshit?
@haroldmccoy6748
@haroldmccoy6748 3 жыл бұрын
@@occamsox5331 No ,he's applying that Joe's actions were from emotional frustration at his team being denied a chance to capture a win ,via opposing teams offensive lineman not being penalized by the officials for blatantly holding him, his teammates being pummeled ( Dick Butkus blindsided hit on LC GreenWood on special teams) thus he became the teams avenger ,challenging a reluctant Butkus to a fisticuffs and then spitting in Butkus face ,who smartly retreaded to his own teams sideline . That's a big difference ,two different galaxy's in comparison to the selfish, narcissistic , antagonistic,juvenile , betamale practices of the current tik,tok Steeler players ,who's antics only motivate the opposition more then usual ( at Bengals week 15 ) to not only defeat ,but humble the Steelers and the attention seeking player .Content and context are totally different . Everything Joe Greene did was to help the Steelers achieve success ,his famous soda commercial in 1979 had fostered no ill intentions of lockeroom division ,created a calling call for opposing teams to be invested even more then usual motivation to beat the Steelers .The commercials presentation wasn't buffoonish ,a plea for excessive attention ,the actual commerical format was introduced to Joe Greene ,he didn't go searching for it . If he made a comment pertaining to a upcoming opponent that had vitriol applied ,it was to instill fear and respect from the opposing opponent ,and impose the mindset to his teammates nothing but their obsolute best as a Steeler will be expected that upcoming game day . There is nothing comparable about Joe Greene and this current Steelers antics .Two different contexts .When Joe Greene became team captain he administered forcing himself to be less combustible in order to embody a less emotional, more accountable , 3 dimisional thinking ,critical thinking ,problem solver . Being a player everyone now looked to for guidance mandated he had more responsibilities on his plate ,he could only go to the ole dark side occasionally ,not consistently . Joe Greene embodied leadership ,sacrifice , accountability , consistent elite performance for 98% of his career . Ego ,attitude ,anger ,with a touch of humility . He was a Leader ,Ju,Ju ,and the rest of his tik tok teamsters are merely veterans .Big Difference .

This is a highlight reel of mauling, merciless devastation, not for the weak hearted. Joe Greene was a dominating destroyer of backfields, equally adept at crushing running backs or quarterbacks. A TWO TIME defensive player of the year. Watch and enjoy (unless you are an Earl Campbell fan, then please, don't watch this)!!

If Greene didn’t get you, Lambert did. In 1976, the Steelers defense gave up just 28 points in their last 9 games and 5 shutouts for the season.

Great highlights for great player ..man I guess refs didn't call encroachment cause mean Joe really took advantage of it lol.

Love how old TV makes it look like they're barely even running and haven't figured out the fastest way to run yet.
