When you do it yourself, it only adds to the satisfaction when it's still functioning years later. It also adds to the enjoyment of keeping bees knowing you contributed to the building up of your hives. What bayou are you around? Thanks so much for watching and leaving a comment. God's peace. Jeff Horchoff my husbands first degree in college is as a fine furniture maker. He's in medicine now, but I was showing him this video. Your expertise is not lost on him. I have explained that you save the Abby hundreds and hundreds of dollars by using the scrap pieces from the coffins made at the Abby in making the superior bee boxes. We made harps for several years as a hobby but his mind is now thinking on making bee boxes. Are your patterns patented and would we need to be concerned with copyrighted material if he decided to try his hand at making some?
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 7 жыл бұрын
I have been a wood worker for over 40 years now, and the skill comes in very handy when it comes to building bee equipment. There are no copyrighted methods or designs that I am aware of when it comes to making bee hive components, and certainly not mine. Think, and build, that's the way I do it. My designs change as my awareness of needs develops, so what I did in this video is not the way I am doing it today. If it works, I'm going to do it. Go with it girl. Oh yeah, I was really impressed when you said you made harps, that is REAL skill. God's peace Cindy. Mr. Ed

Bee colonies are normally gathering food for human beings therefore I think it best to keep treated wood away from bee housing.Another comment I like to make is that while you are likely producing a very fine set of bottom boards in your professional wood working shop the dudes at the farm including me have neither the know how nor the tools to build show pieces like yours. I certainly would love using your bottom boards on my hives, but the cost, oh the cost.
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 6 жыл бұрын
First, thank you for your honesty in your comment, and you make some very good points. I agree, the idea of using treated lumber in a bee hive is not a good idea, even if it is just the bottom board. For that reason I am going to be using standard 2x4 untreated material when I build the next generation of screened bottom boards. I have redesigned the boards so that the only tools you will need to build the boards will be a table saw, a dado blade, a chop saw, a screw gun, screws, screen, a hammer, and some large headed nails, or a staple gun. These are basic tools that most guys have so hopefully that won't be a problem for you. I plan on building my boards in the next 2 weeks and making a video on it. I hope you will watch and let me know what you think. What part of the country are you in and how many hives do you have.?Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

@@JeffHorchoff Jeff can you please explain the purpose of the bottom board in a hive . I am a non bee keeper and do not see the purpose of it .
@CenPapi
@CenPapi 5 жыл бұрын
@@michaelcouvillon3683 Shalom friend! Beehives can be infested with a few typed of detrimental bugs, one being the Varroa mite, which are parasites that will suck the host dry and if left unchecked can most definitely collapse a hive. The next culprit to be worried about is the hive beetle which climb into the hive and lay their eggs in the honeycomb which then hatch into a larvae or pupae cant remember(often called maggots though they arent fly offspring). Once hatched they will devour the honey stores in a hive causing the hive to starve out. With a bottom board the hive does not sit on the ground thus giving it a slight defense from said hive raiders. With a screened bottom board even if beetles get on to the bottom board they will fall through the sceen preventing almost all intrusion. The screened bottom also helps as when bees clean mites off of each other they will fall down through the hive and through the screen preventing the bees from coming back into contact with them. Hope that helped to explain it a little. Yahuweh's blessings to you and yours!

Hello Mr. Jeff, I have a question about your screen bottoms. I tried them this year. I had a couple hives abscond, I believe because of the light on the bottom. Once I covered the bottoms with coroplast they seemed to do better. Do you have any issues with light from the bottom? Thanks for your videos and God Bless!
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 6 жыл бұрын
I always believe when you find something that works for you, continue doing it. I run ALL screened bottom boards on the 60 plus hives that the abbey has, and I have no difficulties with them. I am about to build another 100 screened bottom board within the next 2 month which should prove to you my conviction that screened bottom boards work......for me. I hope that helps Charles. Oh yes, thank you for your blessing and for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

As a 1st year beekeeper I find your videos very helpful. I'm wondering about the last piece you installed. I believe you said it was 3/8 x ?? x the box size. Is that store bought trim or did you make it.
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 7 жыл бұрын
I made all the parts for the bottom board. The little pieces of trim are 3/8 x 3/4 x whatever the length and width of the board is, this allows the hive body to sit right on top of the strips. Dwayne, thanks for watching, and best wishes for your adventures in bee keeping, it is a great hobby. Hope to hear from you again. God's peace. Mr. Ed

Jeff Is it ok to use pressure treated wood ? It wont bother the bee's? Also why 3/8 and not 3/4?
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 5 жыл бұрын
I did use it in this video, but no longer. I have not heard anything saying it can harm the bees, but I now don't want ANY type of chemical in my hive now. In my opinion, 3/4 gives the bees to much room and they tend to build a lot of burr comb when they have extra room. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching. God's peace Joe. Mr. Ed

Well that's interesting. I made several bottom boards and have them set at 3/4.... I guess I can use the table saw to trim them down to 3/8 what do you think Jeff.

Hi Jeff, just wondering why the double thickness on the ends? I look at your stands and all the weight looks to be transferred through the sides as that is what they sit on. If you made the screen slightly longer and recessed into the front and back boards you would save half your screws, a bit of lumber, have less screen offcut and it would still be as strong (and slightly lighter). Perhaps you are trying to build Randy sized biceps? ;")
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 7 жыл бұрын
All the things you are saying are correct. One thing I am anal about is waste, and I wanted to maximize the screen material. By building the boards around a particular screen size, I utilized all but about 5" of screen in a 15'x3' roll of the stuff. All the things you are talking about I considered, but still settled on screen conservation. It was the most expensive part of the project. Those bad boys are heavy, but thankfully, I don't have to lift them often. The Rooster would think they are feathers. Thanks for watching and keeping me on my P's and Q's. God's peace brother. Mr. Ed

Is that a snook you are holding? That thing has to be 8 or 9 lbs, SWEET! God has and continues to bless me, and the real blessing is that He let me retire 8 years ago...........SUPER SWEET! As far as the treated lumber, commercial bee keepers havebeen using it for years with no adverse effects, and I know lots of other bee keepers who use it also and have no problems with it either. Now, I use it too. Ido know it willhold up better than just pine. Thanks for watching Darrin. Tight line and God's peace. Mr. Ed
