Hey everyone! I've been getting asked a lot about the schedule for my video series other than Myth Bust Monday (so the Science Applied and Fundamentals Series)... Because these videos take a lot more time in terms of research, editing, and production/filming than a comparatively simple MBM, I'm only committing myself to about 1 upload per month. So as of now, my goal is to release all of the Fundamentals videos over the next 6 months and the same for the Science Applied videos (where I plan to cover AT LEAST Pull, Legs, Upper and Lower (having already done Push)) I also haven't retired the Science Explained series and am actually releasing a remastered and updated version of my Calves Science Explained video later this week. And I have a goal of doing one in-depth interview per month with a researcher or coach in the field of interest so I can do a deeper dive than I am able to in these short form videos. Thanks again guys for sticking around and showing support! Can't believe we're already at 550K!!!

Jeff can you do a myth bust Monday about creatine? I was taking a little bit of creatine hydrochloride before and after workouts until my brother told me that creatine supplements are a waste of money, the studies are paid for by the industry, and that you can get the same results by drinking sufficient water. He's studying physiology and organic chemistry at UW Madison, so he might know what he's talking about but also my brother is an idiot and I'm not sure if any of that is true. However, there are also lots of videos on KZfaq that support his claim and some even saying that creatine supplements may lead to hair loss. I'm very confused and not sure what to believe when it comes to creatine supplements and I'd appreciate a solid myth bust Monday to put this question to rest

@@ChrisJohnson1988 Depends on type of coffee and type of crewing method but one cup (8fl oz) is around 95mg of Caffiene. So, what you're probably thinking of is an equal volume of Coffee vs equal volume of energy drink. 24 fl oz of black coffee would have somewhere around 285mg of caffeine. A monster will have a bit more than half of that. So, you're close using those figures. A single Bang will have a bit more than 24 oz of coffee, though.

ProMo I understand and agree with you but I just don’t understand why mainstream media treats all energy drinks like pure poison in a can that will kill you in one sip. I know that it is unhealthy to drink but the only people that die from them eather have like 10 in a row or they have a medical condition that the energy drink amplifies.

this relieved a lot of my anxiety about them. I've been drinking energy drinks since I was about 18 and now, I'm 32 and I feel pretty good. I don't have high blood pressure or cardiovascular problems at all. I used to drink like 3 a day back in highschool but I was always active (Skateboarding, running around, Biking). Now as an adult I still drink them usually just 2 a day. One in the morning and one in the last afternoon for work and with plenty of water in-between. I used to remember people telling me that I would end up dead or in a hospital from drinking them, but It's only been in cases where people are literally drinking them like water. Which is pretty dumb, but I know too much is always bad. Or people who just never drank water at all would probably be in that same situation if they drank them like crazy. Not in my case. I really do need to get off of them and I have before, but caffeine is too addicting lol but I'm sure I can do it again. Thanks for the video. I was always nervous of what others had to say about them because of all the negativity it has. But as well people smoke and drink a lot so I couldn't imagine it was going to be all grim.

Caffeine in high doses alteres the nervous system, this is why I stopped consuming coffee, my joints would feel shaky and loose. Dehydration because of coffee is also counterproductive. After a ligament rupture in my left hand, during rehab, my joint would hurt and crackle, only after drinking coffee, with this same sensation of shakiness and loosness. The pain was prevalent, but the coffee made it worse. I stopped caffeine for workout all together.

I drink 2-4 diet red bulls a day and anywhere from 4-10 espresso shots a day. I also have ADHD (which it seems explains my ridiculous caffeine tolerance) and despite being a physician have never bothered to research if my energy drink addiction is a health risk. Perhaps the fear that I may need to stop if the results were not my preferred outcome. Thank you for making this relevant video.

there are also a fair few medical studies (studies, studies are not factual evidence and are just that, studies, people rely on studies too much to prove their points) that hint at decreased cardiovascular function after prolonged periods of exposure to certain energy drinks, I do not remember what they said specifically, but a lot of people have had their own 1st hand accounts of how their heart began to behave strangely after consuming energy drinks, personally I only drink one per day, I drank 2 (monster ultra zero for context) one day and it gave me heart flutters and made me feel weak, I know there are some people who drink 4 a day, which is absolute lunacy, you can imagine how drinking 1-2 per day for years can affect your heart. Caffeine in of itself, is a stimulant drug. It stimulates your nervous system and increases your basal metabolic rate and heart rate, increasing blood pressure and supplying more energy to your muscles, kind of like a toned down adrenaline response, this is why excess caffeine can give you anxiety and panic attacks, and also give you heart failure/heart attacks/strokes/cardiac arrest, etc. There are also some people who downright should not be drinking it, people with heart problems who may not always know they have a heart problem, people who are overweight and at risk of heart attack already, people with high blood pressure.

This dude isn’t even a scientist, his career is going to the gym and making videos. I was having lower back pain for months. I tried a standing desk, stretches, physio, strengthening exercises, nothing worked. A week ago I quit all products with Sucralose (P55 artificial sweetener) and the pain went away in 2 days and has stayed gone. This is just my story but I have been a 'monster a day' guy for like 5 years without pain, but recently i have been using sweetener in coffee, new protein powder with sucralose, pre-workout and quest bars with sucralose, so around 7 serves of sucralose per day. If you are experiencing inflammation or back pain, have a week without any products with artificial sweetener to test if that's the cause.

Wes Novic you could literally google everything that’s in your preworkout. It really all varies depending on what you take. From ingredients to dosage to stimulants. Some preworkouts have the ingredient list but not the dosage so those are kinda hard to know how much of something you’re getting per scoop. But for the most part you should know the purpose of each ingredient in your pre.

I want to point out, about 5 years ago lots of pre-workouts were popping with amphetamine like substances, which weren't on the ingredients. Amphetamine over a period of time will dramatically increase your chance for heart failure at a young age regardless if you lets say only took it for a year.

Coming from a guy who has faced the worst of anxiety himself and did a comeback in the gym preworkouts if you have any kind of blood pressure, anxiety issue is not good for you. A doctor would advise you to even avoid a cup of coffee when the amount of caffeine is nothing compared to those in the preworkout supplements plus it's concentrated when we talk about preworkout powders. Caffeine is known to raise blood pressure so is excess of sodium. I am doing absolutely fine without preworkouts now. No more suffocating or struggling to breath even with heaviest of lifts and there was a time I was hospitalized and it even caused slight enlargement in my heart (which wasn't anything serious and got better in just a week) If you don't feel sleepy before your workout time there is no need of preworkouts in the first place. Your body only cares about repairing the muscles you fatigued. It doesn't care if you lifted 5% more to achieve it. If you have a job and you're taking preworkouts filled with caffeine in the evening. You're going to postpone your sleep even more at night and hence invite anxiety even more with less sleeping hours which will only get worse in the long run. Once it reaches to a stage where you randomly feel suffocated anytime in the day trust me it's not cool. It can fuck up your whole life

Energy drinks are bad, the habit of becoming depend on energy drinks can cause heart problems in the long run. If you do still drink energy drinks do it once every 3-4months when you really need it. Remember too much of everything is bad for you. I seen my friend’s father passed away due to heart failure, because he had a habit of drinking energy drinks. I have tried a sip of monster energy drink and an Anway energy drink, but it fucked up my sleep schedule. I would recommend to stay away from energy drinks and to find new alternatives like water, a cup of coffee or soda to boost your energy.

As much as this video is well-researched, it only focuses on the ingredients of energy drinks, not what the results of the combined ingredients are: Energy drinks, both with sugar and sugar-free have soda levels of acidity. Neutral ph is 7.00, enamel dissolves below 5.50 and most energy drinks have ph levels of 3.50 or lower (going as low as 2.53, which is about the level as limes and lemons). That means when consumed regularly, they're extremely damaging to your teeth (and my teeth could tell you a story about that). There are countermeasures such as washing out your mouth or using mouthwash right after, but if you're drinking it for the taste, you might as well take caffeine tablets instead in that case because there won't be much taste left. That acidity can also lead to digestive problems if you have a sensitive stomach. As such, while not directly damaging to your health through the ingredients, energy drinks have enough negative side effects to making drinking them daily a health risk.
@paradigmwolf4694
@paradigmwolf4694 6 жыл бұрын
Many food items including tomatoes, oranges, lemons, limes, (and even some mouthwash like crest prohealth btw) all have ph levels similar or lower than energy drinks. But the difference between our teeth and the infamous soaking a nail inside a coke can experiment is that we have saliva that constantly washes over it, we brush our teeth (right?), and we sip/chug drinks rather than bathing our teeth in it. Context is important here. Contextually, energy drinks are no risk for your teeth unless you are not using moderation whatsoever (as would be the case with excessive tomato consumption, or overuse of mouthwash). Brush your teeth daily and keep your limit of energy drinks in the single digits like a rational human and you will be just fine.

Most likely people who drink energy drinks have overall bad habits or dont care too much about strict healthy eating... While ph values can have something to say about disgestion.... i mean...in rare cases ( stomach acid is already 1.5 - 3........), you CANNOT affect systemic ph ( ie blood ph ) through nutrition. Blood ph is finely tuned to a very narrow spectrum and done so by the kidneys. Doesnt matter what you eat or drink. I would guess that the reason you sometimes have digestive issues with energy drinks is not so much about ph or caffein but because people dont eat enough fibers. Oatmeal, apples, rye bread, swedish "knækbrød"... all good to balance out lack of fiber. Also... smoothies are probably more harmful to your teeth than energy drinks.

I'm glad to see this. I've been so annoyed by my friend shaming me with baseless claims about energy drinks being super unhealthy. I was willing to concede to him on the sugar and caffeine, while reminding him that I avoid sugar and am wary of caffeine intake, but he said those weren't the problem, it was all the "other stuff". Of course he had no idea what "other stuff" was, and I have an unhealthy need to be as thorough as possible in every debate so I ended up briefly researching every single ingredient in my can to look for anything that was a significant red flag, and still came out with caffeine and sugar being the worst. Other stuff (even small stuff you didn't mention here) is only associated with very rare adverse effects which often have to do with specific genetic... polymorphisms?? or something like that. I can't remember. But yeah i'm not suprised people are like this. I still remember my middle school health teacher telling us "well basically, if you can't pronounce it, it's probably bad for you."

It is unhealthy though, but it's just as bad as coffee. So don't take this video as an approval to feed your own opinion. It's just not as bad as people think. The main issue is that with any addiction it's hard to take it with low dosages. Eventually most people end up consuming more than enough. Some people wake up feeling like shit, and they have to drink coffee or energy drink to feel normal. Not to mention, your body will get desensitized to caffeine and it will demand more to feel the caffeine.

How they can affect your gut flora/other micro-bacteria in the gut, how they can cause inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract, and colon, which can lead to all kinds of central nervous system disorders in the long run; how they can affect and exacerbate certain conditions or genetic tendencies like hypo and hyperglycemia; how they can affect your sexual reproductive health and your ability to get an erection; how they can affect or exacerbate certain mental health conditions like ADD, depression, anxiety; how they can affect joint inflammation; the list goes on.

Ghostnotes the adrenal effects would have been nice to touch on as they're the real concern, but I'm pretty sure your gut flora will be fine as bacteria is the most resilient type of life on the planet.

Different Energy drinks have been shown to increase heart rate and blood pressure, gastrointestinal inflammation, decreases insulin sensitivity, promotes sodium loss (dehydrates you), and dental errosion. There’s also a few pros to energy drinks as well though such as improved memory, alertness, and mood. This is all from a compilation of studies by the government. ‘Energy Drink Consumption: Beneficial and Adverse Health Effects, Ahmed Alsunni, MBBS, PhD

Con Fidential oh nice it increases heart rate and blood pressure? That’s literally was caffeine is supposed to do. That’s the pump.... it dehydrated you? Most drinks do and you should take that into consideration... dental erosion? Come on now every food that isn’t water is bad for your teeth that’s why your supposed to brush daily. In conclusion energy drinks aren’t bad if your active, eat a solid diet and take care of yourself. It’s the people that don’t watch how hydrated they are, don’t work out, and don’t maintain their teeth that see the downsides

Steven Shook Water doesn’t dehydrate you, I know it can be good to have one before a workout for the energy boost, imo there’s better options than sugary energy drinks. Don’t feel inclined to stop drinking them cause of me

The fact that I took this video seriously is because you seem to really care for your body. Thanks for telling me what to avoid and be careful of. I'll follow the Sugar free product and do my daily work out. Thanks for the awesome info. I am aiming to lose weight that is one reason why I am picking Sugar free. Yes, I've already lost 17-20 lbs (8-9kg) so far. I was 209 lbs and now I am finally below the 200 mark. 194 the lowest I got to was 191 lbs got up a bit because I was being a little harsh to my body with my workouts and I had to eat a little more to get back to my feet.

In my experience, I seem to start getting heart palpitations when I use diet energy drinks for a pre workout for 2 or more training days in a row. However, I can use 100-200 mg caffiene tabs or a large coffee instead and not experince that at all. I just assumed it was another ingredient in the diet Monster.

As a dietetics major I would have to say the concern should sway much farrrrrther to the side of sugars than caffeine... Americas habit of drinking sugars and our refined grains are the leading cause of insulin resistance, diabetes, obesity and chronic illness as well as neurological disorders in our country. On a lighter note, your editing is on some next level stuff these days bro I love the videos!

Hey Jeff, Been taking Pre-Workout for years and energy drinks 1 to 2 everyday. Gotten into sleep trouble, now if I don't take cafeine intake everyday, I'm tired all day. I really messed myself up with all this caffeine intake. Need to stop progressivly. Still need to run my business an do everything. Kind of difficult to stop.

I'm really appreciative of this video. I'm sure I'm not the only one, but I used to get a barrage of comments like "you'll die if you keep drinking those", typically from people who had a less healthy lifestyle than myself. It's reassuring that I'm not damaging myself that badly.

Hey, I really liked this video, specially the creation of awareness towards the fact that everything is made of chemicals. I just wanted to point out that most antibiotics are not actually man-made, they are natural products that various bacteria and microorganisms use as defense mechanisms. Humans took it from them. Some drugs that kill microorganisms are man-made but they are not referred to as antibiotics.
