Good Sir.... over and over again, your attention to detail, good camera views of the actual parts you are handling, has saved me over and over again during plumbing jobs!!! The best on the interwebs, by far!!! You are what people are really seeking 90% of the time they go to a hardware store and hope that the sales rep knows the industry and how it works.... they often don't, you always do!!! You should have 2M subscribers or more, because over 2M people every year break things, don't understand how cheap some things are made, or how they work. For any household, you have done a service to millions of people, if only they knew!!!

It's so important to do the proper prep and use the right amount of plumbers tape so you don't get no leaks. Also make sure you go the correct way with the tape that you're going to tighten the shower unit so as you tighten the tape does not come off because you went the opposite way. You're going to get the best advice anyways because this is one of the top channels on KZfaq. Happy new year brother 🙏

Nice video, Jeff. Thanks for the pro tips. I'd like to pay something forward, with an additional tip. If you do happen to snap the shower arm off, and the threaded stub is left inside the wall in the fitting, take a file #6 or 8 I can't remember, and gently gently tap it into the hole where the broken stub of the shower arm remains. Files have teeth on the sides as well as the flat part. The teeth on the sides will grab the inner part of the broken stub and enable you to get on the file with a wrench and gently unscrew it! No need to call a plumber. I have done this and it works great.

That is a good idea because the other suggestion I had for people was to get on the back side of the wall and the other room and cut a hole in the drywall to get at the park do it or to get at it from the front If you have dry wall around the Is shower arm that can be cut

If I have to use pliers I will wrap the end of the pliers with electrical tape and also use a rag on the pipe so I do not scratch it. But usually with plumbing if you over tighten you're either going to crack the pipe or you're going to tighten it so much that you're going to create a leak.
@jeffostroff

It seems like there is a lot of support being asked from the bracket behind the wall. Do they make flanges that have attachment points to the wall to help take weight off the bracket?
@jeffostroff

No, the bracket does just fine. The load cannot be placed on the drywall so the flange is not a viable option.

How do you keep the fixture from rotating on the wall arm pipe? It sits vertical but leans too easily. (I bought the same shower head. ) I think I might have over tightened and ruined the washer / filter in the shower head. Also, i removed the arm pipe and looked into the wall. The female end has noticeable mineral build up. Suggestions?
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff Жыл бұрын
For the mineral deposit build-up you can stick one of those long bristle brushes into the opening of that threaded female connector and try to remove some of the deposits that way. As for tightening the shower head make sure you use a wrench if you really want to type and once that pressure is in there against the black rubber gasket that should be enough to keep it from spinning around on you.
@rhetoricByEric

@rhetoricByEric

Follow up: It turns I out I did NOT damage the threads in the wall pipe. Thank goodness. Instead the last 1/8th inch of the shower arm sheared off in the wall pipe. It was so clean only a close examination of the shower arm showed the break. The plumber recognized the situation right away and managed to cut it out.

The good news is if you use the Teflon tape you don't really need to twist harder than hand tighten and then maybe you could wrap some tape around the pipe and use your pliers to go another quarter of a turn after that and you should be fine

This is the most professional demo Iv'e seem on this BUT.....I'm still puzzled why every demo on how to replace shower head tells you to apply teflon in the threads. With that rubber gasket in there, there's not only is no reason to apply teflon but at the same time, it still does no good in preventing a leak if that gasket goes bad. The proof is, try applying the teflon tape to the shower arm then take out the rubber gasket from the shower head then install. I bet it leaks and leaks bad. Real bad. Of course, you DO need to apply the teflon tape to the shower arm into the wall. I hope I didn't need to say that.

One thing I hate is when people put Teflon tape where it’s not needed. Any connection that has a rubber washer on it does not need Teflon tape and can actually mask a poorly tightened connection. A true professional would not do this.
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff Жыл бұрын
Agree But I also followed the directions of the manufacturer which state to put the Teflon tape on both sides of this pipe. And certainly you need it on the side that goes inside the wall because there is no gasket in there it's just a threaded female connection.

My shower arm threads broke off inside the female fitting. (It was already cracked and dripping inside the wall.) That is a pain. Maybe you know better techniques? Oh and BTW, vinegar yes but no baking soda. Baking soda neutralizes the vinegar and minimizes its effectiveness.
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff Жыл бұрын
Baking soda makes a huge carbonated flow Which helps dissolve stuff and then you Use vinegar again. If something breaks off inside the wall my method of repair is to cut a hole on the dry wall either on the front side with the bathtub is, or on the back side of the drywall on the other room next to it and then you just have to unsaunter the part out of there and sautter in a new female connector and then patch up the dry wall.
