Jeffree Star upset a lot of people when he tweeted a photo of his new alien merch design. People were quick to call out similarities to an existing alien design by a smaller artist, but things escalated when the original artist confirmed that it was, in fact, his design.

There is a way on Photoshop to make your high resolution images low res and still looking vaguely good. NEVER upload a high resolution image of your work to the internet for everyone to see, if someone asks for a better version they'll have to pay for it and get the file sent privately. My tutor just taught us this and I'm never uploading a high res image to my website again, no one is stealing my art XD

Clarification: -Manet and Monet are from the Impressionist period, not Renaissance! -Claude Monet’s painting (1866) was inspired by Édouard Manet’s painting (1863), not the other way around. -So: Raimondi inspired Manet, and Manet inspired Monet. -Same explanation still applies with how each artist created inspired works, rather than copied. Thanks for those who pointed out in the comments 😊

I think Jefree responded and acted appropriately. The person who "made" the design has a responsibility to create original artwork representing Jeffree Stars brand. Not only was that person in the wrong but the person had a strong reason to be fired. You cannot steal someone's artwork and have it represent someone else's brand. Thats not only making you look bad but making the brand look bad too.
@kerri5825
@kerri5825 5 жыл бұрын
I think he lied. Jeffree said he hired a third party artist for the project.. It's likely the artist was free lance and was paid upon completion of the artwork and when the contract ended. I don't think he was fired, it may be the case, he won't be rehired, that's about it.

I love this! I'm a budding artist, and I take inspiration from many different creators, but when I was learning and would directly copy something, I always just kept it for personal use or posted the original art next to mine, as well as including the original artist's name and socials (if they had them)

That's something I never understood with visual arts. If I was to make a cover of a song, I'd never pretend I wrote/created the song. So why do people do it with visual art and pretend they did nothing wrong? There needs to be more education on this sort of things.

That’s the right way to do it! My friend is a budding artist as well and she draws cartoons and her characters and posts them on Instagram, but if she wants to use another artist’s character, she always gives reference and credit to that artist! As you can probably imagine, the artists are very grateful that she doesn’t just rip their work from their Instagram and post it.

Honestly the traced piece's add-ons aren't even well put together. The way the banner flows at the bottom and how it abruptly folds, cutting the "hey, how are" off from the "ya" is just ugly design. I see art theft pretty frequently--more so than I'd like--and there's always a trend of the copying/tracing artist not having the skills to make their copy of another design look good. Whether this be when people directly trace art and then try to colour it, betraying their own lack of skill through their inability to colour (that's actually a thing, if you see gorgeous line work but it's coloured in a shoddy/amateurish way then that's a huge red flag) or trying to add something to a design they took from somewhere else, they haven't developed the necessary skills to make that finished piece live up to the same quality. The only instance this tends to not be the case is if someone can colour really well digitally, but they can't draw well--digital art and online colouring tutorials mean that someone can actually get good at colouring before they learn the rest of the basics (i.e colourists). So basically... if the skills don't match up, you might want to look a little further into that piece. The people who trace (amateurs) don't tend to recognize this issue because they don't know enough about the medium or skills they're trying to pass off as their own. (Also, side note, I'm kinda jealous of @heymonsterart. Not that their work was effectively stolen--so much sympathy for them there--but that it's now opened up a whole new world of possibilities for them potentially working with Jeffrey Star. Good on him for wanting to support a smaller artist too. When my work's stolen it just involves a lot of stress and wasted time on my end, and certain companies selling/hosting the stolen work even make it difficult or impossible to get the issue sorted.)

:') ah man, personally with my art, my forms and anatomy and such are good, but I can't find the patience or mindset for good line art. My lines are either too sketchy or don't have any weight at all. But think I make up for it in coloring and my understanding of basic lighting. It's noticeable how a lot of the people who would actually be able to successfully pull off a stolen art don't ever do it (they really have no reason), and those who can't are the ones who try and inevitably fail. It makes me wonder why they even bother- do they really think some part of the original image will magically make up for their own lack of skills? 😬

I remember when my character design was stolen. This art theft took all the unique characteristics of my character and put it on theirs. Horns, black eyes, clown makeup, sharp teeth, all the way to even using my character's self harm scars. I called them out on it and they said they were inspired by my character. I told them I'm glad they were but what upset me was their design was 90% copied and 10% original. The only original things they did with their design was they changed the gender, changed the name, and drew it themselves pencil and paper. Mind you this person who stole from me wasn't the nicest kind of person. They used depression as a pitty me and get out of jail free card. They did apologize but they kept using the situation as a way to get attention. I called them out on this too and for the first time they never responded because they know I caught them. They almost always have responded to me dramatically, but they knew then that they couldn't fool me this time. I wouldn't have been so angry with them if they weren't trying to say it was completely their idea. I wouldn't have been so annoyed if they just apologized and moved on. I'm tired of telling this story but I feel the need to do so in order to express my thoughts on inspiration and imitation. I'm personally okay with another artist being inspired by my work. What I'm not okay with is if they completely ripoff my original idea and dosen't say "I was inspired by ameiart's character."

It’s important people know that an IDEA isn’t protected legally, only the specific EXPRESSION of that idea. This would likely be a case of infringement (if the original work is copyrighted) because it hasn’t been altered in a meaningful way as a new expression that is just borrowing the idea. It is essentially a copy with minimal differences and additions.

It’s terrible that corporations can just steal art like that. I have my own experience with that. My brother drew art for an album cover (for his own personal use) because he didn’t like the appearance of the actual album cover. He loaded it to his personal library on iTunes. And guess what? They replaced the album cover with his art without even giving him credit. Every time I see that album (it’s a recognizable celebrity) I get pissed off. I remember him drawing it and getting so excited because it looked good.

I can tell you, that the Hot Topic stuff isn't considered 'art theft', particularly if you are on DeviantART. If you look at their ToS, they have the rights to sublicense your art, or your name, or other content posted there and sell it to places like Hot Topic and Red Bubble. Is it shady AF? Yes. Is it illegal? No. You gave them permission when you signed the ToS. Always read EVERY LETTER in a ToS before you sign your name to it. People need to stop using DA for their digital art!

I will say this if you are still learning to do something always put a link from where you learn it from I say this is similar to making a thesis as well, always have a reference and study book where you get it this might be small things to do, but it will put an alibi that you are not stealing from someone I bet this can make good relation directly with the OG artist and such since it is also similar with promoting by goodwill, and also free advertising and you yourself are learning to get better too with your art, so I say this in a good rivalry

Social media needs to have a section that allows fans of artist to report stolen accounts, not just the owner. So many instagram accounts out there do not credit work or literally present a false pretense of influence to artists and then post their content with no name.

As a graphic design student working with real clients, I have to be extremely careful taking inspiration. The line to copyright infringement is extremely thin, and incredibly fragile. Simply using a copyrighted font could cost you thousands of dollars, and possibly a lawsuit. Be really careful if you want to be a professional artist.

@@HJima you usually have to buy the rights to use the font. There are stores for that. After all the font designer works hard to create a good font including everything. It would be wrong to be able to just steal their work. There are free fonts online too but they're usually not that well designed and detailed. Copyright is very complicated and has alot of different factors you need to know if you work in the design field.

There's actually a big issue in the poetry community right now about plagiarism/stealing vs inspiration. It's kind of come out that if someone steals something from someone else and gets away with it, and even gets praised for the thing they've "created", then they'll likely keep stealing until someone catches on. Even though there are still difficulties, it's easier for something to be done when it's one individual stealing work compared to a big corporation.

few big unethical companies like zara do not represent every big company out there. there are tons of good and responsible companies who are considerate. jeffree star cosmetics is a big company in itself. it's just people choose to buy and talk about unethical corporations like zara instead of supporting good brands. we, as consumers, enable zara to continue to shit on small artists. if we stop supporting these companies and buy stuff from someone else they will change.

I appreciate this being discussed *SO* much as an artist who used to share their artwork on a public forum. I stopped because people would use my artwork. Straight up trace it and say it was theirs. I even had their friends come after me and tell me I stole *their* artwork, and I would have to point out that my artwork was posted sometimes YEARS prior to the thief. It sucks.

There was this really popular artist that had their art taken by the website and sold to hot topic and he didn’t even know until he saw the shirt in the store by chance.

When we move toward inspiration, we get closer to creating a life that is truly ours. Imitation can leave us feeling a bit hollow, and we never exactly achieve the same result that someone else has. Look around for great ideas, then try things. The goal is to be our best “us,” not our best “copy of someone else.”
