Yes. No one was inside her head. She was a 19 year old kid, just kidnapped, struggling to stay alive. Maybe she DID conform to their views -- it was that kind of era -- but maybe she was trying to live. No examination of the material will ever bring anyone inside her mind.

Jeffrey Toobin is trying to sell a book. He is profiting from her story. When she got out and got de- programmed, she married, had children and lived a "normal" life, which is testament to her character more than anything else. Before she was kidnapped, she was never radical and lived mostly a "normal" life, too. I believe she had Stockholm syndrome from the extreme stress she underwent in her initial days w/ the SLA.

This seems to have reappeared in the algorithm after Toobin was in the news for ... other reasons ... and all I can say is, this show should be ashamed of yourselves for giving this man a platform to profit off someone else's trauma.

Funny how Patty Hearst....WHO actually went through all these experiences....might possibly have a whole different concept of those situations rather than some guy who is "guesstimating" and at best just throwing out his own interpretations and opinions. This clown is all about stirring the pot and somehow collecting a paycheck as well.....great job if you can get it.

I think when some of us are very sheltered and end up in scarey, what we believe to be life threatening situations, we will betray ourselves to stay alive. Part of that was Patty convincing her kidnappers that she agreed with them on everything. Stockholm syndrom is where you actually do. It takes a very fragile very broken mind and I don't buy that this was her. They had her convinced only that she would never be found or rescued which imho supports her choosing to be so submissive. I am not saying she wasn't raped but simply she felt like it was an environment in which it didnt even feel safe to voice her own thoughts let alone have thoughts of her own.

Elizabeth Smart is another example. If you see Dave Chappelle skit on her vs the 7 year old who was kidnapped the same time. Smart was 15... Left alone & could have walked out the front door at anytime. Only 7 miles from home for 6 months. She had no street smarts. She was from a wealth family (Hearst). Being closeted will do that to you. However that 7 year old wasn't broken yet. She still had a child's view on right & wrong & knew to run when you're scared. She didn't understand the finality of death. She wanted to go home. It was much more simple to her due to her age. She chewed through the ropes & was home that night. End story. It never made the news because we glorify these victims who have more complex cases when instead they should be sent somewhere to get help professionally & the "smart ones" no pun intended should be given the attention so anyone else knows what to do. We have it so backwards & that actually helps perpetuate the victim culture.

stockholm syndrome is a type of indirect brainwashing though when you think about it. Psychological trauma that forces somebody to build connections with their captors and empathize with them? Same ballpark.
@adminsucks8806

Stockholm syndrome is just media buzzed thing. it's not real, you don't just easily get brainwashed unless you yourself has been believing into the same thing as your kidnapper. it's complicated.
@IlluminaAssel
@IlluminaAssel 2 жыл бұрын
@admin sucks That's bullshit... To brianwash someone is very easy if you're willed to rape and torture a person over a longer time.. And yes, Stockholm Syndrom has been made into a pop cultural bullshit buzzword, but there are studies about it and in 8% of als abductions people got positive feelings for their abductors. The question is why any individual felt like that and I'm sure the definition of what's meant with Stockholm. Syndrom won't fit on more than the half of them.. Anyways.. It's a live threatening situation and that over days, weeks, months.. There will come a point where you do anything they want, just in the hope to stay alive and that they won't hurt you anymore or not more than they still do..

Stolkhome isnt brainwashing exactly it's a potential psychological reaction to abduction. It's very easy to induce. Isolation combined with kindness when they take you out of isolation with a couple other things in the mix. It's a type of conditioning but not brainwashing exactly.

If anyone wants the answers to the big mysteries I recommend reading the book by Patty Hearst herself, "Patty Hearst her own story." I was appalled to see that Toobin interviewed her criminal kidnapper and abuser for the sake of his book. He glorified a lunatic and romanticized the victimization of a young girl. Now that I see who Toobin is I am not so surprised, I've seen him sink low many times. She was treated so inhumanely she's lucky she even survived. She had a will to live and surviving was all that was on her mind then. She has told her story and it's disgusting that Toobin would try to rewrite it. He has no moral obligation to anyone, just him and the dollar.

To be honest, if I was in Patty Hearst's situation and I was locked up in a closet for weeks at a time. And then indoctrinated, the way she was, the way she was gang raped for revolutionary sex, for months at a time- by the SLA, who are known to kill using cyanide bullets, I would comply the way she did. She literally had no choice. All these people criticizing her cannot even understand or feel a part of what she felt during all of this. She went forced to go through revolutionary hell, and cannot get off the train.
@johngoldsmith9752
@johngoldsmith9752 Жыл бұрын
The truth likely is somewhere in the middle. My opinion, after watching a few documentaries on this, reading Patty's book, listening to her captors side of it, even listening to her ex fiancé's side of it, is there is some truth in all that has been said, with lots of embellishments sprinkled in. She was young, rich, and privileged. She was kidnapped and just trying to survive. It was the '70's in the middle of mass insanity(not much different than today) and got radicalized. She likely knowingly committed crimes. After the fire that killed 5 SLA members, she likely was scared of the police and the F.B.I. more than she was of betraying the surviving SLA members. I think it was the right combination of youth, background, equal amounts of fear of those who captured her, and fear of those who were working with her family to rescue her, that turned it into this mess that it became. She is a victim, and she is at fault, and she was traumatized. The more you learn about the SLA, the more you learn they weren't sophisticated at all. They sort of bumbled through. The FBI bumbled through. The SF police department bumbled through. The LAPD just pretty much destroyed what they could. Just the ultimate hot mess, there is really no other way to put it. Who to believe, who not to believe??? I guess it's whatever agenda you buy into. I listen to it all and make the best conclusions I can, but this is a special hot mess.

Patty Hearst was kidnapped and kept in a closet for 2 weeks. She was told she could be killed at any time. First Willie Wolfe (Cujo), then Donald DeFreeze (Cinque), raped her in that closet. I agree with PH: "It's insulting to anyone who has ever been raped to suggest a rape could turn into a seduction and a romance." In romance novels, women fall in love with their rapists. In real life, they become so terrified they can no longer think straight. This reminds me of Ariel Castro's shocking claims, "I just held them there without their being able to leave. I wasn't forceful on them. Most of the sex was consensual. There was a lot of harmony in that house. Sometimes they would even ask me for sex, many times." I don't believe Castro and I don't believe this guy.

she didn't fake her kidnapping. She was locked in a closet for 2 months, raped, and mentally abused. She was 19 years old. as Patty said "everyone likes to think oh this couldn't happen to me I'm too strong. Easy for them to say bc they weren't kidnapped and locked in a closet". The Movie "Patty Hearst" implies she was given an abortion when she was caught. Very likely and I doubt she wanted to be impregnated by "cinque". She went through more than any 19 year old should.
