Another tool you can try to experiment with is a foam eye smudger make up “thing” lol it can be good for blending, erasing and adding skin imperfections although it can be hard to control at first. I can never get the jakar charcoal to leave a smooth finish and i’m wondering if it’s the paper i’m using. It’s the back side of arches hot pressed watercolour paper and it may have too much tooth so i’ll have to see if i have any strathmore to try it out with.

How do you lay out your drawings to get the proper proportions? Do you freehand. This is my biggest problem.

Some people do grid method, others use projectors. Depends on the artist. Not really cheating. Think of it as tools.

@@james_7978There is no cheat method, the tools professionals use are those you've mentioned above. Even the masters used tracing, grids, projectors etc. Good reply
