Jeff's Little Engine Service demonstrates HOW TO ADJUST VALVES on a NOISY HONDA GC 160 5.0 HORSEPOWER Engine. The Honda GC160 motor is on a Pressure Washer that was found at a junkyard. I will be using this engine for a mini bike and do not plan on using the water pump. This is why you see me run the engine without a water supply to the pump. ~ Jeff

The engineers at Honda have thoughtfully provided timing marks on the belt driven wheel to easily find TDC, so there's no need to stick a screwdriver into the cylinder. Also, I've never heard of a combustion stroke before. It's the power stroke. You want to make certain that the engine is cold when adjusting the valves, and that the piston is at TDC on the compression stroke.

All you have to do is be sure when adjusting each valve that whichever one your adjusting you make sure the rocker is on the base circle of the cam lobe .. Simply put you want the rocker resting on the opposite side of the lobe where there is no lifting action and completely off the ramps which is the only area you would expect to have any clearance so the valves can seat .. Notice on the Honda there is only one lobe to operate both the intake and exhaust valves .

A Honda service sheet unnumbered makes no mention of a (e.g. cork) gasket but instead says, "Apply a liquid packing (ThreeBond 1207 or equivalent) to the cylinder head cover installation surface, and install the cylinder head cover." I thought they were called a rocker cover.

I can't believe that Honda didn't make a gasket for these GCV engines like they've done for all their other engines for the valve cover. Thanks for the great video. I'm working on a Ryobi Pressure Washer with the GCV160 engine that's popping and backfiring. After I adjust the valves tomorrow I'll put silicone on the cover and reinstall it

You are not supposed to ever run a pressure washer without water, this will burn up the pistons and seals in the water pump quickly and make the water pressure very weak or not make any pressure at all.

Great video thanks for the info. These are great little engines. I have the GCV 190 which I think I have a timing problem. Watched the video on it and not much to it other than pulling it apart to adjust the timing. Valves are already adjusted, new carb, spark plug and new coil. Not firing on trying to crank it. My brother said it probably jumped timing on a backfire. Hopefully I'll get it running 😆

Do you have a part number for a replacement exhaust valve guide for this engine? I am not finding one. My exhaust valve suffered from lack of lubrication, and galled up. Need a new valve and guide, if it is serviceable. Otherwise, I have a boat anchor. It will run good for 30 minutes, but once it makes enough heat, it locks up and breaks the rocker arm.

Jeff Iam new to your channel and after watching a few videos am actually curious .I noticed you provide specs for most of the engines you adjust valves on .However I haven't seen any with you using a valve grinder, pilots, stones or even a valve seat cutter to recondition valves . Fore give me for asking but isn't a valve seat cutter and is pilots imperative to recondition heads even if you purchase new valves and intend on lapping . I mean respectfully valves do wear and in doing so the seats are affected as well . So how do you contend with these issues ? What about a warped head as a result of over torqueing from other do it there selfers that expect your expertise to prevail where there efforts failed . I know personally when I do a over haul or rebuild I grind my valves and seats …..even dress the valve steams with chamfers on the older L head engines to ensure proper end gap or lash is correct . But I haven't seen you resurface a head on a surface plate or check the flatness of a head with feeler gauges . Do you just have such work done at a machine shop ? Or do you just purchase new heads with valves ? Do you just clean the carbon deposits from the old heads then reapply ? I only ask because you advocate your a expert and I have been in many shops over the years all of witch were expert dealers whom provided surface plates and proper valve grinding equipment for me to use . As I expressed in another comment on another video you provided ….I Know your experienced that remains evident in the quality of work and videos you provide to your viewers . So where is the equipment ? I know you push the minimist mentality in your videos to educate the common do it there selfer . But at least up to this point in viewing your videos I haven't seen any valve grinding equipment . SO WHERE IS IT AT ?
@JeffsLittleEngineService
@JeffsLittleEngineService 3 жыл бұрын
Those are the old days Kevin! I remember them. Replacement parts costs (even oem) are so cheap these days that rebuilding heads and valves is usually not cost effective timewise. Also assembly tolerances are so tight at the factory these days most engines will never live long enough to need valve work unless something mechanical breaks. This is my experience over the last 20 years.
@kevinbolin7665
@kevinbolin7665 3 жыл бұрын
@@JeffsLittleEngineService That's ironic I to have a little over 26 plus years of experience. And you do make great points . Personally after giving your words careful consideration I concur as at least in the past 10 years or so most parts become superseded or {N.L.A.}...no longer available when it pertains to the older equipment . Briggs and Stratton is a great example of these facts as they only offer 20 over pistons on most of there older models . Makes me wonder with all this service by replacement mentality whats to be expected in the up coming 10 years or so . As I am sure we can both agree quality sure isn't what it used to be . I noticed in one of your recent videos a cam failure on a Intec engine .I to have encountered my fair share of cam failures on 28 threw 33 cubic inch OHV Intec engines . The cams gears are just to thin anymore ….hell for that matter the compression releases break and cam lobes wear down as well . I spoke of heads in my previous comment …….How many times have you had to purchase a new head because of valve guide movement on these single cylinder Intecs or really even the twins . Personally I encountered 16 just last year after looking up sales to customers …..it would be hard to say how many valves and heads we ground ….but a fair estimate would have been at least 40 or so on Kohler / Briggs/ Kaws/and of course Onan collectively . So having the valve grinding equipment is a wise investment . Still I can see your point as well ...What I am about to mention really dosent pertain to Briggs engines ……..But Husqvarna chainsaws …..LOL …..Hell I believe Husqvarna would make plastic pistons and cylinders and sale them under other brands as a parent company if they would hold up long enough for a warranty to expire ….LOL ….look at how they cheapend Redmax quality . They where having difficulty with making there version of the strato charging tech and basicly bought out Redmax to own the rights . Ever wondered why Jonsereds started labeling FD on there oil mix? …...Thankyou Husqvarna …..for providing the Japanese standard ….That already existed with Redmax …..I have witnessed so much shady crap it is unreal by Husqvarna …...Jonsered ….LOL...….Oh my goodness …..I have seen Jonsered sales obligations in full forse...They change sales reps several times to many about 2 years ago ….seriously we had 4 in 6 months ….all of witch wonted to push obligation sales because they were the so called new rep at the time . Complete bullshit but they insisted more inventory for Jonsered each time. So needless to say Bolins small engine dosent contend with Jonsered anymore. Now lets talk about Husqvarna and there precious Poulan lines ….We carried Poulans for several years at my employers dealership ….I F@Cki*g hate Poulans . They are the biggest pieces of shit god ever cursed mankind with . And it becomes apparent how I deal with Poulans in all the various colors and brands there sold under by watching my channel . ….But I have deviated away from topic ….so anyway ... {CAMS }...Can you believe the plastic …..sorry composite ...crap you find in Briggs push mower engines ? What about the PTO gears ….geezes …..what sorry pieces of S%it ...Last year we had 4 push mowers come in with snapped cam gear teeth and PTO teeth all because of common issues …...not extreme …..common everyday homeowner situations such as the forgotten walnut or thick grass clump that on previous briggs engines would have never been a issue . Truly sad what people are forced to contend with after spending egregious amounts of cash .

Jeff I have a GC160 pressure washer. Took the pump off to service the unloaded valve and put it back together. Changed the oil in the engine, fresh gas. Since then the GC160 does not want to start when hot. When it is cold it fires right up one pull. Could it be that the unloaded is not set properly? I don’t have a pressure gauge to check it.

Hi friend. I have experienced this many times and here is Jeff's Tech tip #453655: I would clean/rebuild the carb and replace the float needle valve. If the carb is filling up too much or seeping gas it is basically flooding out at warm start up. Cold starts don't mind a little extra gas to get going but warm starts are effected geatley by a flooding carb.
