📮 A good cover letter complements your resume by telling a story about why you deserve that first round interview. In this video, I share 3 Practical Tips on how to Write an Amazing Cover Letter, and even include a free sample template for you to download.
For those of you who have never written a cover letter, or perhaps it's been a while since you wrote one, it could be difficult to start, since there are really no standardized template. A cover letter for an internship would be different than that for a full time job. And sometimes, the job application says submitting a cover letter is "optional" so should you even bother? 🤔
I walk you through step-by-step on how to write an amazing cover letter and even provide an example cover letter for you to reference:
1️⃣ Hook the reader in by mentioning a connection with the company
2️⃣ Be purposeful about the information you include in your cover letter body paragraphs
3️⃣ Use a simple cover letter template

Hey Jeff! Thanks for this great video! I'm a 3rd year CS student and have applied to over 50 internships but haven't heard back form a single person. I try to apply mainly for a software development role but I love CS and would be stocked to be a part of any team. I would really appreciate your help!!!

@@JeffSu Yes, I am trying to build a network on LinkedIn but I rarely get any open ended conversations from the other side. I am also struggling on what kind of questions I should be asking the recruiter or the engineer that's on the team while remaining professional and respectful. Same goes for virtual career fairs. I am not sure how to get the conversation started and in which direction it should be guided.

I had already sent 42 applications before I found the video. Then I actually followed every tip you shared in this video, even the formatting of the letters. The one application I sent after finding the video I got called for the interview and I got the job on the spot. The interviewees even said they loved my cover letter. I just wanted to say that these tips are super helpful. I used to think cover letters were outdated and put all this time into tweaking my resume only to get little to no responses on my application. After using both this, your resume advice, and some personal tips I learned along the way I went from almost no responses in 2 months of applying for to10ish jobs, had 6 interviews/callbacks, and 4 job offers. Hi Jeff, I wanted to thank you for all the tips for the interviews! Until I updated my resume and cover letter I have submitted over 20 applications for software engineering roles and none of them really reached out to me. After using your tips and the template, I applied about 5 applications and most of them invited me for interviews. In the very first interview also used your tips on answering common questions. I've been out of the workforce now for almost 2 years and it's been very difficult trying to keep up with all of the contradictory resume, tips, etc. I actually found your channel while researching GPT prompts and how to optimize them. Little bit struggling with the hook, applying for Marine Scientist Assistant at wildlife conservation non-profit, having a good solid education, more than 15 coffee chats with people from the company, and experience. However, 3 years gap (look after the baby) and no US experience. Will be so grateful for your suggestions! Well amazing viewers like yourself are the reason I can still make videos so I'm more than happy to answer your questions haha. While I'm not familiar with the role you're applying for it seems like you're doing all the right things (networking etc.). Have they told you there are openings? And have you asked them if it were up to them, why they would be hesitant in hiring you? I would also address their concerns with transferable skills you've had before AND skills you got while taking care of the baby (people forget that's the toughest job of all!)

How did you go with this? I would say keep an eye on positions opnening, and apply. even send expressions of interest in the job you want. do this every 3 months. Let them know you won't go away. Eventually something opens up and all the connections and attempts will work in your favour.

Great advice! But just a heads up to the folks in the comment section, the cover letter Jeff sells in google doc format can be found for free in google docs with slightly different colors. Just open a new doc>File>New> from template>scroll down to Letters, you’ll find it under Swiss letter

I'm applying for an apprenticeship as an instructor at an outdoor activities centre. The main part of the job is overseeing and instructing people taking part in the activities (archery, air rifle shooting, rock climbing, canoeing, ect) I've camped at this site many times and it was actually an instructor who works there that suggested that I could apply.

Applying for a position as a full-time on-road supervisor with UPS. I have worked for 9 years with the company. 1 year as a union employee working as an unloader in freight. 3 years as a part-time local sort supervisor. 3 years as a part-time preload supervisor. 2 years as a part-time dispatch supervisor. I have received training certificates that allow me to train delivery drivers and personal vehicle drivers to deliver on behalf of the company. Through telematics, I have pinpointed and reduced unnecessary mileage and increased stops per hour to help drivers achieve their paid target day. I'm currently working on attaining my Associate of Science in Business Management to enhance and further my career within our company. I've never written a cover letter and I'd like to see what you think would be a good start. Thank you for all the educational videos you put out there.

Even though I took notes from your videos and applied them to my cover letter still a small piece of advice or starting statement would help me a lot.

Tip: Just start. Start with the mentality of 'i just have to start and i can write a killer intro at the end if i have to'. What you'll find is that writing the body is the main thing, and then the intro will kind of just 'appear' at the end. write sketchy intro, write body, re-write intro, edit body, edit intro, write final statement, edit final statement, edit the intro again because i thought of a cool way to start. Edit final statement again because i thougth of a cooler way to end. Example.

I’ve always wanted to go into law but after spending a year in university, I realize that I have to go through countless hoops just to get to law. I took some law classes and holy shit…….I’ve never been more interested and had more fun than being in those classes and going to court and watching a real case! It’s something I will never forget and even though I don’t have any formal experience besides those classes, I want to be in that environment so I’m trying to apply as a legal assistant as I know about law on a very basic level and would love to learn but I also deal with people all day in my current job. I have a pretty good resume with good experience and good references but I think my cover letter will be the driving force to land me and interview in this profession. I hope it does work! Law really always has been my dream!

Thanks Rugved! So embarrassingly enough I actually have done typing tests and I don't think I'm that fast 😭, I'm at like 134 WPM or something (compared to 150+ for those REALLY insane typers). Would this be at the company side or with an agency? Those would be very different. If I assume it's luxury fashion you're going to have to show an experience (i.e. trigger) that resulted in you wanting to pursue this career path

Thanks for the informative video Jeff! Absolutely love your editing style and how to use an example and annotate. As a fresh engineering graduate with no industry experience (only side projects), how would I be able to create a cover letter as personal and impactful as this while getting past the applicant tracking system? I understand that I could contact a recruiter and POSSIBLY get around the ATS, but I wouldn't want to rely on that. Thanks!

Hi Vince, thanks for your comment! So first of all, don't worry about ATS. Focus on networking and getting your cover letter read :). As a fresh grad, recruiters wouldn't expect you to have tons of experience, they'll actually be interested to hear more about your side projects and how you might be able to provide *fresh* perspective with your own unique background and experiences, so lean into that!

Thank you Benjamin! That's fine, most of my friends in consulting did not have a business degree. So first, you should decide on one of those directions and double down on it for cover letters, you definitely want to highlight things specific to each industry (finance vs. consulting). For finance your hook might be related to current events, and your take on how that affects the macro environment. For consulting something like the hook in this template? :)

Thanks Jeff for a great great content. This is so refreshing from a normal cover letter being done. I am eyeing to apply for a managerial role, and having hard time to create this letter, as far as I researched that they're almost the same. Good tips and I will be using them with my cover letter. If you can also add more sample that would be a great help to give us more ideas that we may use.

Hi Gus! Thanks for bringing this up! I actually got the format inspiration from the Google Docs template, and the fee is mainly for the content within 😁. I actually share the PDF for free so viewers can use the PDF + the free Google Doc template to create their own. But if you want to edit immediately, I believe the fee is fair. Thanks again!

I'm about to try this for a youth worker role, it's very serious and got more responsibilities in comparison to my other job roles and I lack the professional experience so to speak. I'll be working with children who are impacted by violence whether that be victims or defendants. One of the leaders of the charity has apparently been interested in speaking to me due to my "lived experience". I can't help feeling under prepared for the idea of taking on a caseload and managing it as it is something I've never done however I know that I could make a great deal of difference in the children's life's and wish I would've had somebody like me in this role reaching out to me when I wasn't on the best path. This video has definitely made me feel a little more confident about writing the cover letter and I feel optimistic about getting that interview now :)

Which Masterclass course did you take? I don't have a lot of understanding of the role but I do believe you need to show you have (1) Administrative task experience, (2) Strong communication skills - customer service, and (3) Project management skills - since you're dealing with a lot of moving parts. If you have absolutely no experience you can still use previous schoolwork to showcase those skillsets. Best of luck!
