Alternating cable cast on

This video shows you how to work an alternating cable cast on. This is a great cast-on method for ribbing, and I explain in the video how to work different combinations of knit and purl stitches.

This is a great alternate cast on for K1P1 rib. However, as you have suggested, it is not as straightforward when one wishes to knit a K2,P2 rib. If you cast on for a K2,P2 rib, you end up with a very crusty, uneven edge. After much trial and error, I have found after casting for K1,P1 , some stitch manipulation is required to convert it to K2,P2. (Also see Willy Wormhead tutorial!).

How would one adjust the stitches for a 3x2 (K3, P2) rib using this cast-on?

Very versatile because of it being reversible and sturdy and also a lot of knit and purlcombinations!

This is the best! I just did a tubular cast-on for a hat last night and this cast-on this morning for a sweater. It looks so good and is so much easier to do across 200+ stitches. As always, Jen’s directions are the perfect balance of providing enough detail and being concise. Genius!

This is so much easier than I expected! What would be the best bind off on the other side to get a similar look?

There isn’t a bind off that matches particularly closely so I would suggest a tubular bind off is pretty invisible in ribbing so that would be a good choice. 👍🏻

Would you recommend this cast on for top down socks?

It depends a bit how it comes out for you. I tend to find it to be not stretchy enough of a top down sock, but if you’re a looser knitter it might be absolutely fine. I think you’d need to try it and see. I hope that helps. 👍🏻
