I was the first female in the back of the kitchen at this one place and the owners tried to let me go multiple times because "the back is no place for a woman" but the head of the kitchen wouldn't allow it because I out preformed the boys so much. The wait staff also made more money the kitchen staff (of the average worker, not head people obviously)

I had roughly the same experience as a guy. Girls worked in the front guys worked in the back. But we both made the same amount of money. The back was 10 times as hard of work as the front. So one day I told my manager I wanted to work in the front and that technically my job description was front of the house and not back and I no longer wanted to work in the back. So I was switched to working the front. Best decision I ever made until I quit after college.

I wasn't saying it was a bad thing, I was just saying her observation still holds true. Capitalism succeeds because it goes with what works. Cooks are paid 5x what servers are per hour by our restaurant, but servers make up the difference through tips- if they are young pretty girls, they make up the difference and then some. Most guys would make more by being cooks, because we won't get tipped as well as the pretty girls, so we take the cook job. Again, just reinforcing her observation about girls in the front, and guys cooking in back; I wasn't trying to say that it didn't make sense, or was sexist or something. For me, it isn't really an issue that needs to be addressed, just a noticeable phenomenon.

The attractive people in the front, the rest of us in the back; that said, it does seem like the ratios are different, in that for every 1 attractive waiter there are 3 waitresses, and vice versa in the back. At least that was the case at the places I have worked. It's funny, because I have done both- waited tables when I was younger and fitter, and started cooking as I got older.
