I love that Jennifer points out how Lucy is regressing when she does the "no surrender!" hand movement, right before hitting Beverly with the chair. Because yeah, absolutely that sense of her being trapped by her early trauma comes through loud & clear, but it's doubly interesting because that isn't the last time we see Lucy do a gesture like that. The final scene in the film, Lucy engages with Dylan on the mountain in a kind of air-bender dance that looks similar. But in that moment, it doesn't read like regressing, because she's anchored in the present by the connection with Dylan. But it's so brief. It's so ephemeral. In an instant, it's gone and Lucy is scrolling through photos the lawyer took, picking over details like the lighting, which is something Beverly had done earlier in the film. Which I found just so true and sad and humanizing of a character who - I think - often doesn't feel human, herself. But then the camera pans to Dylan, and the full tragedy of it hits, because it's like Dylan was given a glimmer of the connection with Lucy that she yearns for, and then it's gone and she's back to being alone in the world. And it's a beautiful world, and the scenery works so well here because it gives a sense that the whole world is spread out for Dylan to just... you know, take and have and... just be free. And yet, the final note of the film - for me, at least - is one of loneliness. It's probably clear I loved this movie, and I loved hearing Alice and Jennifer talk about it. I was surprised when I sought out reviews and found alot of people didn't connect with this film. To me, it's a really unique and special movie. I hope Alice makes more.
