The Marriage Story press conference at the 57th New York Fiilm Festival featured Noah Baumbach, Scarlett Johansson, Adam Driver, Laura Dern, Ray Liotta, Alan Alda, and producer David Heyman. They discuss the influences on the film-from Hitchcock to Persona-Robbie Ryan's cinematography, the duality of marriage, the importance of adding humor to the narrative, the different personalities of the lawyers, and much more. Moderated by Florence Almozini, NYFF selection committee member and Associate Director of Programming at Film at Lincoln Center.
57th New York Film Festival is presented by Film at Lincoln Center from Friday, September 27 - Sunday, October 13. See ticket info, the schedule, and more: filmlinc.org/nyff
Noah Baumbach’s new film is about the rapid tangling and gradual untangling of impetuosity, resentment, and abiding love between a married couple negotiating their divorce and the custody of their son. Adam Driver is Charlie, a 100-percent New York experimental theater director; Scarlett Johansson is Nicole, his principal actress and soon-to-be L.A.-based ex-wife. Their “amicable” breakup devolves, one painful rash response and hostile counter-response at a time, into a legal battlefield, led on Nicole’s side by Laura Dern and on Charlie’s side by nice Alan Alda and not-so-nice Ray Liotta. What is so remarkable about Marriage Story is its frank understanding of the emotional fluctuations between Charlie and Nicole: they are both short-sighted, both occasionally petty, both vindictive, and both loving. The film is as harrowing as it is hilarious as it is deeply moving. With Merritt Wever and Julie Hagerty as Nicole’s sister and mom, and Azhy Robertson as their beloved son, Henry. A Netflix release.
A centerpiece of New York culture since 1963, the New York Film Festival will introduce the most essential new cinematic works from around the world to U.S. audiences in its Main Slate. NYFF will also continue to feature a variety of titles in different sections and sidebars, including Spotlight on Documentary, newly rejuvenated classics in Restorations and Revivals, a diverse selection of international and locally made Shorts, the ever-expanding experimental showcase Projections, and the immersive storytelling experiences of the cutting-edge Convergence. Additionally, there will be an exciting lineup of special events, free filmmaker talks and panel discussions, and the latest editions of our annual Industry and Critic Academies.

I think the thing I will remember the most about this movie, the acting part, is one of Adam's last scenes near the end when his son got a hold of and is reading his mothers list of the things she loved about him, and when you look at his face it is absolutely real you can see uncontrolled emotion just breaking out and it is so hard to look at and no understand completely what is going on with him.

they did such an excellent job! laura dern, alan alda n ray liotta make their short appearances count! They were so rivetting! While watching, the comedic moments such as Adam Driver's character's inability to order his own lunch and him needing Scarlett's help, her helping him to tie his shoelaces slice me back to realization that people can separate and still love each other. And yes, I used to be bothered watching married couples confront n fight but watching this, the director makes me realize that the one argument they had help them bond n understand each other. The director did such an excellent job n he was right. Divorce is also a love story. As the director seems to insinuate through this film, the legal harassment of divorce couples faced should not take love away from it all.

They are irritated because all the interviews are made at the same week and are the same questions on all of them. But there's no way to know it because are at the same time and interviewers don't know what others do before them.

@@Hayat-hl1bh One has to be competent in the English language, if one is conducting an interview in English, with individuals who speak English. I'm multilingual. I remember having to do presentations in French and German, conducting interviews in French and German, and writing multiple compositions in French and German. I had to take a two hour proficiency exam in both French and German. This all occurred at the high school level. I have taken other foreign languages in college , while studying courses in the sciences, and other prerequisites for a career a health care professional.If she couldn't speak English fluently, with ease, she should have used an interpreter.

@DeniseEggertwaterlily
@DeniseEggertwaterlily 3 жыл бұрын
Hayat I am multilingual. I am competent in at least 5 languages besides English .I studied at least two languages besides English for many years in school. I am a native speaker of American English.and fluent in British English, Canadian English, and Australian English. I would consider myself to be fluent in only two foreign languages: French and German .One needs to study the history and culture of every country of the world where a particular language is spoken by native speakers. One must also study the literature , the arts , notable individuals who were authors, poets, artists , scientists , and heroes of a country . Part of studying history and culture includes the study of its etiquette and manners . If one doesn’t study the proper etiquette and manners of a country, where a language is spoken, one not considered to be fluent in the language . Professional translators will agree with me. I have worked with many foreign medical residents and foreign nurses who have come to work in hospitals the U.S. to complete their training or to complete clinical work . They will tell Hospital Administration that they are fluent in English - but many of us will have to intervene when they upset patients , family members, and other staff members by their behavior, mannerisms and speech. I’m sure that their behavior, mannerisms and speech would be considerate totally appropriate in their country but it is offensive in the U.S. Example : One well intentioned medical resident from the Middle East was doing a admitting history and physical on a cardiac patient in the emergency department . The patient became furious , upset, and explosive when the medical resident asked the man if there any family members married to cousins in his family tree . I happened to hear this when I was walking past the room . I intervened and explained to the patient that the medical resident didn’t mean anything by his statement . I explained that he was coming from a different cultural reference, -because it is quite common for cousins to marry each other in many parts of the Middle East I had to explain to the medical resident (outside of the patient’s room ) that it was an insult in American culture to question someone if there is cousin marriage in his or her family tree , because cousin marriage is considered something that only uneducated , backwards people do who live in isolated places. I have had certain nurses from Africa boldly ask me my age and martial status, upon first meeting me and then boldly ask me why I don’t look as old as another nurse who is the same age as me ( in front of the other nurse ) These questions are considered completely inappropriate, rude, and displaying poor manners in the professional and business work place, in the United States . One doesn’t ask these private questions of a colleague or a coworker upon meeting them. These questions might be asked of a colleague or coworker in private , when they have developed a friendship and trust. We have had male medical residents who came from India who were able to speak the Queen’s English but they didn’t realize the culture differences in the U.S., regarding the status of women and the status of professional nurses and respiratory therapists in healthcare . They would actually order professional nurses around, as if they were subservient to them. They came from a country where men are dominant and have the rule over women in every role,including another physician who happens to be a female .I saw this in person in front of me in India .They expected all women to be obedient and submit to their authority . They included men who were professional nurses .One professional nurse who was a man, reported this one Indian medical resident for ordering him around as a “ water boy like Gunga Din” and threatened him with physical harm, when he didn’t blindly obey .
