I will never forget my high school music teacher's sharing her experience seeing the original Dreamgirls show three times... She described Jennifer Holiday's performance like a Tsunami and a boeing 747 rolling down the theater and rocking your soul to the core. She said her voice was so strong and powerful, the whole theater shook and it was as if she was flooding life and unbearable emotion and power into her soul simultaneously.... As all of this aforementioned is happening - she said that there were children and adults hysterically clapping, fainting, crying and jumping up and down like they were at a rock concert. She describes it as the most powerful live performance she has ever seen -- mind you, this is coming from a woman who's been around and worked with some steller musicians and singers.

This most perfect description of Ms. Holliday as Effie live on stage. The intermission had to be extended because it was a good 5 minutes before people could get themselves together to MOVE. It was gospel and emotional and carnal and passionate and loud and painful to ache live. SHE TOOK ALL OF THE AIR OUT OF THE THEATER and you gladly gave it to her for her to have the POWER TO DELIVER!!!!!

She did this night after night after night. It’s insane. It’s obviously hard work and talent, but there is something superhuman about doing this even once, let alone dozens, hundreds of times.

Thank you for showing Jennifer Holliday some love. The song was written specifically for Jennifer. The creator's of Dreamgirls wrote that song during the workshops. I was lucky enough to be an usher, when Jennifer starred in Dreamgirls. Night after night she brought audiences to their feet. You should have heard Jennifer the night Aretha attended the show.

When I was a kid. I moved to NYC and spent my last $40.00 on a ticket to DREAMGIRLS 1st Preview on Broadway. We lost it on this song. I wept and screamed for her at the same time. It was intermission after this and all was so stunned. Amazing memory and amazing performance.

The song was made for her voice. It was Jennifer Michael Bennett, Henry Krieger, and Tom Eyen who all worked together putting this song together, way back when the show wasnt on broadway and wasn't known really, when it was just what u can call a side show that popped up from time to time in different areas. Jennifer had a lot to to with the changing of the show for in the beginnings of this show, before broadway after she would perform this song then her character was over and she was supposed to had died from an overdose, close to what happened to Florence Ballard of the Supremes.
@AnActorReacts3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info!! I’m glad they changed it for the show. The real end is honestly too depressing and it makes for a more triumphant story how it is in the show. Plus you can’t just lose that voice after the first act! Haha

There is the bootlegiest of bootleg video recordings of a complete performance of the original Broadway cast production here on the KZfaqs. When I tell you that show is THE SINGLE GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT OF MANKIND, I am not overexaggerating.

This person would've had to sneak a 1982-sized camcorder into the theater under their coat and keep it well-hidden for over 2 hours. The camera-work is shaky. The dialogue is barely audible at times. Even still...IT IS EVERYTHING! And wear some comfortable headphones or earbuds, you will need them.

She actually work shopped this, so the song was tweaked and made for her, with her input. They actually fired her because they wanted her character to die after act one (kind of like Florence Ballard of The Supremes). The plays director, who she said she had it out with, was Michael Bennett, who, at the time, was one on Broadway's most powerful director's after doing A Chorus Line. He disagreed and wanted her character to die. They had it out and and Miss Holliday said she walked. He said he fired her. Whatever went down, she couldn't be replaced and they called and asked her back. The rest is history. This was only her 2nd show. She was discovered in the church by someone in a Broadway show and asked to come to Broadway for "Your Arms Too Short to Box with God". After this, she got Dreamgirls. I met her once and spent about 10 minutes backstage talking with her. She is a humble, sweet and very down to earth person. Thank you for reacting to this. I love seeing people's reaction to her after hearing her for the first time. It's exactly the way I felt. Check out her version of the Barbra Streisand hit "The Way He Makes Me Feel" at the Oscars. She was specifically asked, by Streisand herself, to sing for her (The song from the movie "Yentl" was nominated for an academy award and Streisand at the time had incredible stage fright and wouldn't sing live). She, of course, killed it.

The definitive version of this song. No version comes close. Her performance is organic. A masterclass in how to sell out emotionally with your vocals and interpret the lyric while still retaining stage and situational awareness.

You...didn't....you actually reacted...oh lawd, let me watch this. Edit - Thanks for reacting to my request. This version is just untouched. 4:01 You're right, Jimmy was not in this scene in the film version. Bill Condon (the director/writer) cut his character out of most of the numbers from Act one, partly for storyline re-write purposes but mostly because, well let's face it Eddie Murphy can sing, but he can't SANG...nor is he a dancer! And the vocal range required for those songs were out of his ability. You really should see the Broadway version. There's several bootlegs floating around. As much as you may like the movie, NOTHING beats the original. #Dreamgirls is my all time favorite musical & I've seen so many productions over the years, but the OBC is by far the best!
