I’ve heard this done really well by a couple of singers (most notably Jennifer Hudson) who haul in every ounce of power they can muster, but none of them come close to Jennifer Holliday. Yes, there’s bags of power in that voice, but it’s the little things that make it peerless. There’s light and shade, control in the power, the subtle nuances in her vocal that make it. Not to mention the way she doesn’t just hit the notes, she builds into them. This version just gives me the goosebumps every time
