The hard part of about making content at scale is I can't keep everyone happy (FWIW I'm sound sensitive and gravitate to no music but I'm trying to find a bit of a balance because I do think it helps integrate and amplify the important stuff when it's used well - I just don't know how to use it well yet!)

🙋🏼‍♀️ Jennifer! I love your videos but I think one important video is missing from your channel… how do I recover from already making all of the mistakes you say not to make? I don’t have the option of leaving my job. I’ve already over shared and reacted poorly to my coworkers when they gossip… I feel like everyone has already established dominance over me… is there a way to recover and bounce back!?!? I feel like my current work environment has turned me into the weakest version of myself and I dread going to work now.

Co-workers are NOT YOUR FRIENDS. I'm a social person by nature and I've made this mistake numerous times. Yup, co-workers are not your friends. BTW, there are a lot of other things you should never tell your co-workers. Never tell your co-workers you have a side-hustle of any kind. Never tell your co-workers your house or car is paid off. Never tell your co-workers that you are handy and save money by doing your own house or car repairs. If you boss gets wind that you're getting ahead on the money he pays you he will find a way to pay you LESS. Bosses want to hear that you're struggling and barely able to get by.

I'd add mental health and family issues. Unfortunately, scapegoats tend to overshare as they seek support and understanding from others, but at the workplace, judgement runs rampant.
@JenniferBrick
@JenniferBrick Жыл бұрын
Mental health issues are sadly stigmatized, and while there are considerations as to what you disclose at work and who you disclose it to, when you need accommodations, it's not avoidable. Personally I've been open about my mental health at work, not that I'm shared inner details or debriefed my colleagues about the experience of having a panic attack, but I don't hide or feel embarrassed by having seasonal allergies either.

This is a very good point! I experienced this up close & personal with my last employer. Not for me personally (although i have my personal struggles not unlike Jennifer's and a few others) but with co-workers who couldnt keep pace with the higher achievers! The problem with mental health is, unless you experience it personally, in your life or those you care about, the tendency to not understand what is going on with others and assume they are JUST like yourself ie just as potentially capable, had continuous negative affect on work flow & morale! Especially problematic was when a person through out a name of a condition. People thought it was an excuse or just didnt know what one was talking about. BUT if I mentioned a persons symptoms or struggles, people would be more sympathetic. mentioning names of ailments did more harm than good.

At my prior job, yes. I am actually on the faces of disability awareness with my story of PTSD with my new job, though. Even my best friend didn't know how badly I suffered at my prior job. My bosses and peers did know if they yelled at me they could always get me to stop arguing, even if it was because they were shifting the blame to me for something they did. However, although I have opened up about my story, I have spared the details. I leave it at "I have endured the unendurable" and leave it at that. Honestly, no one truly wants the details.
@rebecca_stone

Re mental health - it really depends on your company's culture and also what level of seriousness of mental health you're talking about. And probably how senior you are too. My previous company was amazing on this issue and it never hurt my progression upwards. Plus in order to do my job as effectively as possible, it was in my interests to have my co-managers know about mine so that we could use practical workarounds. I'm talking about severe ADHD here - that said, I also had (now in remission from) BPD, that one I would only tell my direct manager though, it's far too stigmatised and misunderstood on the internet especially.

Number 5 is so true. I am right now having a very bitter time by discovering that among 12 co workers, I was the most educated one, most hard worker, the one that shew incredible good results, and the one that started plenty activities that were important to the organization. No coworker did it and I started 16 new different ones in 13 years employment. Now I got another job, where they offered better money, better opportunities and enviroment. I am happy with it but discovered that in the organisation I am leaving now I am one of the 3 ones with lower salary. It made me enraged and very sad. It is a lesson.

A lot people especially a middle mgr. who is your boss is trained to have a friendly face to the lower level employees they are supervising but their loyalty lies to their mgr. and people above them. You should never say negative things in your 1-1s to your mgr. like I am tired, overworked, too many projects, you don't like some co-worker, etc.. There has been an increase of meetings at work which encourage employees to share their emotions and personal challenges. I have been set against such meetings as they encourage persons to share ackward details. For example one colleague shared that felt responsible for her son's suicide due to giving priority to work rather than family. Another shared that she liked to destress after work by having a glass of wine. In both instances there was rampant office gossip with the latter being branded an 'alcoholic'. I tend to have a high level of participation and contribution at meetings but in these meetings I avoid saying a word like my life depended on it. Even if I have personal struggles there is nothing to be gained by sharing this with a room of over 100 colleagues. Plus they are not mental health professionals or friends so they are not in a position to advise or support me effectively.

@@siesies000 I think so too. The culture is that we are a 'family' and it is pitched as a 'safe space' where we can support each other and I get that people need a space to feel supported socially and emotionally but work is not the best place for that. I know how backstabbing my colleagues can be all too well to trust them with my innermost thoughts and feelings. I was tasked with working on a special project with the same colleague they branded as an 'alcoholic' and I was warned to 'be careful of the witch'. All because she had high standards and was demanding of her subordinates. We had an awesome time working together and to this day if she has high visibility projects she includes me on her team because she knows I am reliable.

I agree about the promotion topic very strongly and it’s something people easily forget about. Keep in mind that there are coworkers that might admire you and be jealous of you at the same time. They may see your ambition and dreams in such a positive light that they develop the same same dreams and ambitions based on what you want. Now, you have caused a competitive situation where there might not have been one. These people don’t or can’t think for themselves so they copy you and then you may become the resentful one. All of the other stuff is true too, but career aspirations are directly related to money and ego. Those are two things that cause people to do weird things.

Rule # 1, there are no friends at work. Rule # 2, don't complain and get sucked into along with complainers... Keep mum and focus on doing your job... Rule # 3, HR is never your friend... Learned it here. I overlooked # 2, and someone big mouth\"jump the gun" yelled out where the whole company heard it. The damage has been done to my reputation implicitly and I address the incident privately to my direct supervisor about it that I was having a bad day at work and it's a one time failure. That's weeks ago, anything else I should have done or differently after the event ?

I was a member of the board of a global company for 3 years, and I was at the top of the succession line. What people were not completely aware is that I had had lots of success on my previous positions and had a privileged financial situation. As it was my 50th anniversary I decided to open my house and have a big gathering. I cannot express how much I regret this decision. My colleagues were all wealthy, but they got envious, specially the CEO. My financial situation became a constant subject of discussion, and jokes, in the office and the dynamics of my work relationships changed dramatically. Two years later I left the company as my career got "frozen", and all the good opportunities were given to other people. Don't share your financial situation, good or bad, with anyone in the office, 'cose it will impact in the way your performance is perceived.

People you “think” are your friends in the workplace will be the first ones to disparage , gossip and turn on you behind your back. I’ve seen it happen over and over . Best thing to do is keep to yourself in the workplace , Maintain a polite ,professional relationship with co workers while keeping a professional “distance” from them but do NOT make friends in the workplace. And do not ever discuss your personal life with co workers. Keep your work life and private life completely separate ( and this includes romantic relationships, don’t get romantically involved with co workers, it will affect your job and be disastrous). Make and keep friends and romance outside the workplace. You’ll have a lot less issues to deal with and you will be much happier & less stressful at work

Good morning. Long time since I posted. I would add on the job search that I stood out positively with most interviews in mentioning that I had to step away from my office if they called (went to my car). And zoom was from my phone, which was occasionally choppy on video, but I said I would never use company equipment. On the final interview we scheduled it on my day off so it was from my computer and my equipment and the difference was obvious too. The fact that I would not misuse company equipment stood out as a positive on job interviews. I didn't wave it around, it was just if you call me at work it's a 45 min drive home, so you are talking to me in the car instead. If you want to zoom on my home network we need to schedule a day away from work, or use one of my days off.

So, first thing's first. Your coworkers are not your friends and HR is even less of that. Be professional, go in, do the work, get paid, fuck off. Nothing more, nothing less. Don't "party" with them, don't hang out with them, don't "befriend" them. You never know what type of boot licker you will be "friends" with and you'll get stabbed in the back with the first chance. I think some of this (and some things commenters are saying) really depends on the field. I work at a theatre where many of us are basically just artistic/creative people with mental health issues trying to get by in an industrial world and put our efforts together to keep an old building running lol. Because of this there’s a particular sense of comradery where coworker empathy is encouraged. If someone in my life dies I’ll tell them, if I’ve been having a tough week or am feeling tired and emotional I’ll tell them, if I’m working on a project or have a second job I’ll tell them, if I’ve had some past struggles I’ll them (when appropriate). If I like someone I’ll try to make friends with them even if it’s temporary/work-based because all friendships are contextual/situational (that’s how relationships work), otherwise I’d be extremely lonely. This has become my workplace standard, so as much as there are still things I curb at work (tactility, language, gossip etc), an environment where I can’t at least be a human being in the ways above would be toxic, depressing and lonely for me.

Funny story working at a company where someone got a new job, he told some people was fired the same day manager was mad about it he was a key employee. About 4 years later the company landed a big contract with a new company worth millions when they sent this same manager to meet with that company manager who was sitting across the table that very employee he fired. He tried to apologize to him he knew this would be a problem didn't work. They lost the contract in less than a month and fired that manager the moral of the story is treat everyone with respect and dignity no matter the situation. You never know how things can turn out there even been workplace shootings over the treatment of an employee.

I guess it's because I am laid back and easy going. But I seem to be like the unofficial office therapist 🤣. People just come around and open up to me about how they feel about so and so, office politics, etc. I have even had managers open up and say things that honestly, should not be let out. I am happy and content in my position, so I don't care to start anything. But my advice in the workplace? SHUT UP! SHUT UP!! SHUT UP!!! Most people in a workplace can professionally get along just enough to get things done. But most people have nothing in common and personally don't like each other. They will gossip about the most trivial subjects you can imagine. I have had people complaining about how bad the receptionist glasses look for her face. I had one lady talking to me about how dirty a guys truck was on the outside and it makes her wonder how dirty his home and children must be 😱.... Again people, SHUT UP in the workplace! Stop gossiping about people. You don't have to personally like your coworkers, but if they are professional and courteous, that is all that matters. You also don't know what a person might be going through in life, your negative comments and gossip might be doing some real damage to that person. The most disgusting gossip I have seen happened about 8 years ago. In the break room was a lady who was just wide open talking about another lady. OMG, did you see what so and so did to her hair!?! She shaved her head! I can't believe she did that! She is so ugly now and looks like one of those department store mannequins.... Me and another worker asked if she knew why she did it. Before she answered, my coworker said her daughter has cancer and is losing her hair due to treatment. So she shaved her head to make her daughter feel better.
