I was repeatedly passed over for promotion at my last job. Kids who were only hired a couple of months were promoted over me despite the fact that I had been there nearly a decade.

I'm sorry you're dealing with that. If the growth path you want isn't there, it might be time to consider companies who want to enable your potential.

Never be loyal to a company, who never see your potential. Might as well reconsider moving at a different company. Start networking more.

It seems like just moving to a new job is better than getting promoted because you can have the same responsibility and more pay. While the existing employer probably won't give you much more that what you were already earning.

If you're optimizing for money, absolutely swapping jobs is going to yield a higher pay increase in most cases (not all, but most).

I was a job hopper during times of high inflation. I had really no choice. I think it stressful to start in a new place. Plus it is a small world. If you work in a certain industry you will know everybody there.

@@withpikachu2402 Employers usually give out very minimal pay rises and over the years it builds up to losing a lot of money as your actual market value increases. I guess it can be stressful for the first month or so starting a new job but I think it's worth the effort to get payed what you are worth, nobody should settle for less if you ask me.

Bad advice: When asking how to move up you get told "Keep doing what you're doing"
@JenniferBrick
@JenniferBrick 2 жыл бұрын
I cringe when I hear this is said. No, if you're at the point that you're asking if you keep doing what you're doing you'll get the same results (ie stay stuck)

I enjoy and appreciate you helping us find a career that we can thrive and not just survive. One thing to add regarding what you said about getting high marks in schools is that sometimes we get high marks to impress, show off, or to avoid judgments from others or from ourselves, meaning it was more about doing and not learning. If we present ourselves with an A in mathematics, but we genuinely don't like math, we are misrepresenting who we are, which leads to inauthentic connections. There is a term for this called "People Pleasing." So, do well at the aspects you actually want to do. And yes, taking control of your life and your career is a sign or emotional intelligence

This is all very true. Love the comment around not waiting for the career opportunity to come to you. Make yourself shine and show those that control your promotions, that you are a leader and proactive. This will get you noticed!

I totally agree, except in my case, I prefer to channel this same amount of energy towards moving to another company on a higher position and/or pay. Current company team is too top heavy for me to be visible…and they are all empty cymbals who just polish apples and talk crap. Some don’t even articulate well and simply “confuse to conquer”. Well….I do not wish to compete with such people and I d rather let them shine where they are! I’ll just go have my sweet revenge elsewhere.

It's hard at my age not to be good at more things. (But, I don't take the best notes in the world). I am finding a distinct lack of experience in numerous subjects. I am the only subject expert locally in my UAQ. My supervisor is encouraging me to go into supervisor and management. I am the permanent team lead now. The previous lead returned as support and headed to a new project eventually. I spent many years working hard and going nowhere. Now as the lead I do present accomplished goals directly and support the others on my team. I can be the team lead that I never had for them. I think the worst advice I have heard before I found your channel was, "get used to working through failure." Does anyone really want to get used to failing? Accept that it happens, but find new ways. But get used to failure? And it was delivered by one of those bright cheerful happy people who don't need coffee because they are always happy.

No wonder a lot of Americans hate their jobs. The issue sounds like there is management who have no appreciation for talented people. I suspect personal jealousy has to do with it. They rather keep the less talented people who are not so much a "threat" to themselves, job wise. Management won't admit it but although talented people are good for the company... they fear deep down that they might also one day advance over them. It's just the way things are in this competitive society. That's why I see a lot of talented people get burned out cause they are actually despised for their success by all too "human" management. If one is too successful, then these "less talented" management will try to set people up to fail. It's a crazy society we live in. So lots of people will just hate their jobs due to all the hypocrisy and politics. In the long run, these companies will fail cause they cannot keep their best people to stay loyal. Why should they?

I think I am overlooked at my work for promotion possibilities, because I never took part in team building events and I never contributed to my boss birthday fund. It means that my name is not on her birthday card.

Good Morning 🌞 Jennifer - I once championed someone else for a promotion because they had welcomed me into the company & supported me .. it was their turn & I was in a solid position as their # 1 person & within a year was promoted with their support. I didn't " jump the line " ( probably could have ) & it paid off. Hope you are having an awesome 👌 summer ☀️ - Thanks as always for the excellent content 😀

It’s really sad when leadership will not reward those people that take on more work, work that leadership does want done. To expect people to take on work with no reward is just ridiculous.

Don't think if you create the opportunity that it will automatically work out. At my current workplace, I thought I had created TWO different opportunities over the course of a year. BOTH fell through. Finally, after feeling totally defeated, I attemped a third opportunity, and I got that last one to stick, and it was worth the wait and failures on the first two--it's a MUCH higher salary. I do think that my boss really pushed for the last one though, because she started realizing that I was skilled and qualified enough for a better position and I would leave her office to get it if I could. She listened up and trapped me (in a good way, I wanted to be trapped, I built the cage myself).

Promotions are primarily political and whether you are liked/respected in the co. Yes hard work is a given unless it is nepotism.

I got a promotion but won’t officially be recognized till next month. I already been doing the work required in the promoted job title but it doesn’t come with any grand raise. The job planned on giving me a 50 cent raise…it’s such a waste.
