So I’m from Canada and I’m 19 years old on Jan 30. When I was a kid, a neighbour from the UK had these old Top Gear episodes on VHS. When it was time to move on, he gave them to me since he knew how much I loved cars. I was hooked on all of these episodes and would memorize all of Clarkson’s monologues. I looked up to Clarkson as a bit of a role model, and it’s the reason I know so much about cars today. I ended up writing a letter to Clarkson, Hammond and May sometime about 10 years ago just thanking them for instilling such a fiery passion for cars. However, I was only 7 or 8 at the time and was too shy to mail the letter. Good times. Hope all is well for Clarkson these days.

I have to disagree with him on the styling. I think for being over 30 years old, it has aged really well. Clean, simple and funtional, with an air of understated quality and solidity. The exact opposite of modern cars with all their flashing LEDS, fake exhausts, scoops and vents, chock full of poinless tech that will no doubt fail very expensively. These old Volvos are legendary for the milages they can achieve when looked after. 500k is not unusual for them!

I have driven the 850 once or twice somewhere in the mid 2000's, a car of a friend of mine, fantastic car. Reliable, 225 000 kms and running, safe, and not as bad looking as the previous ones. The first 'nice' Volvo, and later there was an estate. I thought it had come out around '90, but it was '92, apparently. I had driven the 145 ps version, it lacked a bit of power, a 170 or 200 (Pferde Stärke) version would have been better, this 2.5 turbo would have been great. Now own S60 T5.

We had a burgundy 240 GLT with tan leather interior. Fully specced - alloy wheels, electric windows/sunroof, carpeted (!), overdrive gearbox, Blaupunkt stereo. The works! It sounded absolutely incredible, such a growling engine. But, it was a VOLVO, it looked like a Lego car, and I was about 7 years old (so had posters of Testarossas and 959s on my wall). I was so embarrassed riding around in that car, despite it being so comfortable and solid. I'd absolutely love to have it back and cruise around in it these days. Ironically it might be my favourite Volvo of all time now.

I absolutely prefer the way the 3-series drives over the way the 850 drives. The 850 is just a baby 440 (which is a perfectly okay car, but nothing special). The 34x is actually fun to drive, especially with a manual. The 740 I think is still one of the best driving cars ever made. Honestly, when Volvo went FWD, they lost me (although I did a very happy 125.000 miles in my cheap 440)

I would call the 850 the last of the "volvo bricks"..driven volvo cars all my life..from a 360 to a 740 then a 240 all saloons..I now have the S 40 1.6 petrol which has surprised me.....older volvo car speaks for themselves.

i own the same Volvo 850 Bj 92. with 2.5L GLT in Blue. Its got 150.000km now and i bought it nearly 10 years ago. I love this car, nearly no problems. Its drives rly good and i made a lot of good mamories with it. I even crashed into a old Benz once and i only had to buy a new hood and new headlights. The other car was totaled ... 😅 happends ig. Dang i love this block.

@@antesosic1600 While most people don't seeing decent cars getting crushed, they still need to understand that all cars have to get scrapped at certain point. Some cars may not be allowed on the road anymore, that Volvo 340 is probably not allowed on the road, it probably has a rusted undercarriage or something.

I guess :(. I wish i could keep them on the road forever, but hey cars like the 850 and W124 will be on the roads for a very long time. Hopefully ill be able to enjoy the 850 soon

@@antesosic1600 Yeah that's the good thing, some cars will be on the roads longer than others. Luckily there's still few 80's and 90's cars left on the roads, 70's cars getting more uncommon as time goes on.

Maybe I'm a bit partial as a Swede. But I did not like the design of 740, 850 very much when they came out. But Now I actually do 30 years later... really weird... It seems timeless..

We went from a 240 to an 850 and it was like the horse and cart being replaced by an aeroplane! The 850 accelerated up hills! Since then we have had an S90T with a manual gearbox - what a car! Then a petrol XC70, followed by a diesel XC90, followed by another diesel XC70. Every model better than the previous model. Next might be an S60 twin motored EV?

I couldn't find love for the 850...ive owned 2. but ive owned 4 Volvo 740's...2 NA and 2 turbos. Either way, putting the power to the rear wheels is WAY better. The 850 is more modern and styled a bit sleeker, but the 740 was more practical and even tho it had less HP it was more fun to drive! 220hp doesn't mean anything when it goes to the front and you cant steer. And don't get me started on how much easier it is to work on a RWD over a FWD! My last 740 was tweaked to 200hp @ 15psi and was a blast to drive.

So very true. I've owned 240, 940 turbo, and 850 turbo (222hp). 850 was by far the most modern and luxurious, but also much harder to work on and more problematic. When things go wrong on the 240 or 940 it was also very easy to work on and relatively cheap. On the 850, parts under the hood always hard to get to and very pricey repairs. Engine and transmission on all 3 are bulletproof though. Favorite of the bunch by far is the 940.

palebeachbum the nice thing with the 900's is they made them until 1998. last year for the 700 was 92 or 93. naturally, the younger your old car is the better it will be. As tough as the 700's are, getting a used one these days means buying a car that is at least 20 years old and has 200k-300k miles on it. But ive seen a few sub 200k 900's from time to time. One reason I loved my 700's was that they are a very cheap used RWD car. My best one was a '92 turbo red wagon with 230k...all in working order with good body and paint that I bought for $450. I drove it for 1.5 years, only put $300 into it and then sold it for $500 :)

RCPro Driver 1995 was the last year 940's were sold in the US. Now that I've owned the 2.3L 4cyl, 2.3L 4cyl turbo, and 2.4L 5cyl (all excellent motors), I'd like to try the 2.9L 6cyl. in the 960/S90. I've heard they have problems though. Probably still better than the typical engine though.

Ha haaa...been there, done that. Nice car, but if devoid of proper maintenance, it became a money pit. Almost cost me my marriage, you know how women become bitches when a man makes a mistake, especially in the car section... ;-) The power of association, I see one of these nowadays and cringe remembering those married days, lol...

palebeachbum We have a 97' s90 with about 130k (my mother's). I'm thinking about getting it from her since it drives like new. Have had fewer probs from it than my 850. Still miss my 850 though.

The yellow volvo at the beginning that got crushed at the beginning if you check the numberplate MJH 711X on registration check it says that it is untaxed and the tax was due 1st February 1991. It just doesn't make sense that it was crushed yet when you type the numberplate on registration check it comes up.
