If you like bourbon you should give scotch a try....full stop! Scotch and bourbon are both equally awesome and interesting types of whiskey to explore. Scotch arguably has more diversity in its ranks than bourbon. All the way from super sweet and smooth to punch you in the mouth smoky Islay's. And that is hard thing for a dyed in the wool bourbon. Point of this video isn't that one is better than the other. Bourbon is perfectly nice, but Scotch has a depth and range that puts in on a whole different level. I love bourbon because it was my gateway into Scotch.

Love my Islays, particularly Ardbeg and Bruichladdich. A little too attached to them, actually. I have a hard time convincing myself to try other whiskies.

I am a whisk(e)y guy through and through (I love gin, rum and tequila, but when asked "what's your drink", I automatically say "whisky"). Love it. Malt, blended, irish, bourbon, rye, you name it, I love it. It is simply an incredible human creation. But if I were forced to choose one whisky to drink for the rest of my life, it would have to be Scotch. Useless info of the day (or evening): One of my very favourites is Lagavulin. Great video. PS: Jeremy is right. It's "Eye-la". ;)

Treacle is on the description for Ardbeg Uigeadail. It's a thick and sticky dark syrup from refined sugar. It looks sorta like molasses, like the other comments said! Great video, always look forward to your videos!

I’m an old school scotch drinker for 40+ years and recently decided it was time to experience good bourbon. My “transition” drink is (was?) single pot still Irish whisky, specifically Red Breast 12. Listen to a few opinions and got 6 bottles of recommended KY bourbon. It’s been an interesting journey. Went to Bardstown and man if you’ve never stepped into a rickhouse you’re missing out on one of life’s great experiences. That 145° white dog straight out of the column is vicious. There are only 4-5 scotches I would recommend to newbies. Great insight.

I asked my wife to get me a bottle of single malt while she was at the supermarket. She knows I like Glenfiddich or Glenlivet or my no.1 would be Talisker. She brought me Laphroaig. I've not drank Laphroaig for probably 25 years after overdosing . It brought back some memories I'd obviously chosen to forget. I totally sympathise with tyre 🔥 and mermaid bathwater. Its amazing how your taste changes over the years as I would have drank Laphroaig over coffee for breakfast when I was a youngster. I am Scottish and currently live in Scotland although will not waive anonymity if any Islay fans are reading this.....Go Islay.

I started off mostly enjoying bourbons with the mindset to try Scotch one day. Had the crazy idea to try Lagavulin 16 as my first one and almost wrote Scotch off completely. After another year I was gifted a Glenfiddich 12 year and fell in love and haven't gone back to Bourbon since.

As an American who was born in Scotland, I approve. I know you don’t get too hung up on pronunciations but Oban is more like O-bn (almost like bin) vs O-bahn. It’s about 70 miles from where I was born.

I managed to get on the Edinburgh whisky tour last year and what an eye opener it was, the depth and nuance of the different regions totally blew me away, prior to that I'd always either liked a whisky or pretended to. Unfortunately the border is closed to us English right now but should be open soon. Also I don't know if it's in your remit but the Irish have a fair history of Whisky and there's Manx spirit in between, not aged long enough to legally be called a whisky. As for Bourbon, it's never been a thing for me, we get Wild Turkey and Buffalo Trace, and the usual JD and JB but that's about all. Great video, thanks. You got me in the first 30 sec! Totally agree with you, Scotch is a great change for the palette! That cut after: "Am I suppose to hold it in my mouth?" Great cut and so perfect in that context! Let's say, good thing I wasn't taking a sip at that time! Those names and those descriptions are very interesting. I got introduce this year to Islay scotch Laphroaig and Ardbegs. I really enjoy those, but you have to go check the Laphroaig website and check their description video. Hilarious! Laphroaig is not nice to the nose but the taste and after taste are very surprising after smelling it! Awesome video and interesting to see Alison's reactions.

Scotch is 👑 All bourbon has a similar flavor profile, sweet, that's why so many people prefer it over scotch, it's easier to drink......just my opinion.

You are correct, my Dads Scottish and its pronounce ( "I" La ) love show, my favorite whisky is Ardbeg 10yrs and Speyside is Tamnavulin double cask, both go great with a cigar or a pipe

Good stuff Jeremy. There's a reason why our wives are called our Better Halves. Can't remember the scotch I first tried but it was inexpensive. Beefeater maybe? I know I've just triggered the Scotch Snobs but whatever. The peat notes reminded me of a nice English pipe tobacco.

When I was 20 I somehow got it into my head that I wanted to learn to drink scotch. I did a little research and drank a little every night for about 6 months. I told a guy what I was doing and he got me into Islay which I drank for another year. I kinda stopped for a while after that but I feel lucky I have an appreciation and love for scotch.

Dalmore 12 year is the best first scotch for bourbon people. Lagavulin Offerman. Smooth but a little peat.

When you're sniffing whisky(ey) you should keep your mouth open a little bit. It helps to dissipate the alcohol vapors.

Don’t let yourself be limited indeed. There are some great whiskies all over the world. Some of my top tier whisky come from everywhere. Woodford reserve double oaked (US), hibiki Harmony (Japan) and Glenfiddich 18 are some of the whiskies I alway have in my cabinet.

My wife did not like Scotch or any Whisky for that matter; one day i gave her Lagavulin 16 and she loved it, now i have to hide my Islay's 🤦♂️ I should've Known better and never let her try in the first place 🤣 Actually I'm very happy that we now have one more thing in common that we get to enjoy together. I wrote all bourbon off. Because all I ever knew was Jim beam white label, Woodstock and Jack Daniels. But, a couple decades on, there's some good bourbons out there. Even in the down under market

Springbank funk is life changing. High end/hard to find scotch blows every other whiskey out of the water. Especially some independent bottlings.

This was a great episode. I think the club clap is the new sign off. Great to see Scotch getting explored here. There shouldn't be any segregation in spirits. The more you can taste and explore the better you are. A monthly Scotch video with you guys would be great. I'm close to singing up with the club. So there are a couple of Irish whiskies that you should try, if you haven't already; Teeling 25 or older and Middleton Very Rare 2017 or 2019. Of the Scotch whiskies my favorite is Octomore 10. It is funny when you mention the whiskey tribe guys. I have a buddy that was telling me about them, this was a while ago. He didn't realize, at first, that they there are here in Austin. They have a cool place just south of us. (Okay so Texas distances are a little skewed. It is more like a couple of hours.) Thanks Jeremy! 👍👍👍

Quite a few distilleries have admitted to using colourings just to keep the look consistent due to inherent inconsistencies from barrel aging. People taste with their eyes; if it doesn't look right, they will be convinced it doesn't taste right.

It's nearly 1am, but before you start I need to pour myself a 24 year old Glenfarclas Milroys Exclusive... Okay I'm ready you can start now... Oh wait I gotta push play. Favourite bourbons, Michters, EH Taylor (Small batch and single barrel), Wellers (who doesn't, right?) BuffaloTrace, Stagg Junior, Kings County. I'ma a Scotch guy. I like Bourbon, think Rye is better (I like the spicy), Pikesville, Angels Envy, Michters Toasted Barrel Straight Rye are my top three. But I've had whisky from England, Japan, Taiwan, India, Sweden, Switzerland, Norway, France, Ireland, Australia, Tasmania, Lebanon, China, Canada and plenty more (benefits of working in a whisky bar). I like to try from as many places as possible because they all have their own thing. Some are okay, some are bad, some are just terrible (france) and some are exceptional. I'll drink any whisk(e)y that's handed to me. Except Jack, I hate jack. Jan, 1982, I was 4. If you're looking for sea salty, briny whisky, TALISKER. My old boss, Eddie (taught me pretty much everything I know about whisky and cigars) used to say that 'It's that you don't like whisky, you've just never had the right one." But for me, nothing beats Scotch. Top five; Lagavulin, Longmorn, Springbank, Glenfarclas, I'm realising right now that there are so many I love...

Hey dude, I'd like to inform you that all SMWS bottles have codes on them which you can use to tell where they come from. That Gunsmoke over the Moor you thought came from Islay is actually from the southern parts of the Highlands. the bottle's code is 16.48 if I read correctly, which means it's SMWS' 48th single cask bottling of Glenturret (distillery code 16). just typing SMWS codes on google will give you a list! cheers!

I grew up in the south around bourbon drinkers too, but still I've always been more of a scotch guy until recently embracing bourbon in the past few years (Old Forester 1920 is my current go-to bourbon). Enjoyed the video, I use to love Glenfiddich scotch whiskey a relatively cheap single malt scotch whiskey. Scotch does varey greatly, finding one you really love can be difficult.

The green label colors reflect peated, not just Islay btw. I've seen some in the past from SMWS from Campbeltown as green labeled too! Also, the long age ability for that climate isn't only climate driven (it is in the evaporation aspect of it), but also the spirit doesn't get overbearingly woody because most are not aged in new oak like bourbon has to be.

I wish there were more videos like this. There's a bunch of scotch only or bourbon only people. To me that just means you're missing out on a lot of fantastic whisk(e)y. There are amazing bourbons, scotches, irish, rye and so on. I say at least try as much as you can.
