JERIKA!! You're totally speaking to me here. Thanks for all your advice. I literally made $195 in 2023 and was doing a happy dance. 3 years of doing this amazing job and I was in the black field the first time. I always knew this was going to be a while...I'm in for the long haul. I LOVE it. Also, I think you do all your own in house creating because you're creative. I'm soooo the same. Thanks for always putting amazing material out for us so we just know we aren't alone

Yep! Time and patience and understanding this is not a get rich quick thing is the key. It’s about doing something that you love. There might be a way to get as much money out of it as possible, but I see so many burn out and hate it doing it this way. Not for me.

I set up my soap business last January, in honour of my father who I just lost. It is a complex start, but it soon becomes second nature. I made my first cold process soap in December 2022, and opened my business in January, 2023. In the UK, we need to have toxicology reports for every product, and also have them logged into the government website on the cpnp portal. So far, I have 12 retailers nationwide.

Since opening fully last late summer I have made a few thousand and many memories with fellow vendors and curious customers that I am so thankful for. I put my money right back into my business and hope to do even better this year. I am having a lot of fun on the journey and love the science of it all. I am pleasantly surprised by all of it. Yes! Many think they will make a few loaves and spend hours, days and weeks building a website and then “launch” And think everyone is going to come flocking to buy. And then no one does because there was no marketing. I built pretty much my whole business around selling at farmers markets face to face. Online is still a small part of my business. And yes, hire an accountant. 100%! I touch on that in a video I’m putting together because I have so many that ask me for tax and legal advice. You are very right.

Some of your earlier information was fantastic, especially the business information. Formulation is very difficult and application of technique and information is very hard to convey. It's a combination of scientific and artistic knowledge. You have many streams of income. KZfaq has been very profitable. And yes, you said it, Trying to make a living from just selling some bath bombs and sugar scrubs or any other products is not easy It's very hard work. There are so many experienced makers sharing on KZfaq. It's really hard to find the information and knowledge about the science and technique from KZfaq creators or influencers. Really have to be wary that whoever and whatever these makers are doing that it's worth it and not just Pinterest flops. Also KZfaq wants to make money from you as a maker. I get it that doing advertising and being affiliates is another part of business profits. Buying equipment and supplies is expensive. It's part of business. Many makers are promoting making a base product for formulations. That means access to base materials ( such as taking calendula flowers from a garden and make an infused oil). and with knowledge and equipment to take the plant to the next step for using it in another product. How to make a profit? Make really good products for chosen demographic. Keep expenses low. I have to keep asking myself do I just want it or do I really need it. Sometimes I think the most valuable things I have in running a business is time and energy. That's the kind of debt that is pretty hard to replenish.

I don't think I would do etsy. I see so much against them and all the bs that comes with them. I'm happy with growing slowly. It will happen. I so love the laser printing. Someday I will get there.. The machine does take time! There’s also the time it take to figure out each setting so that’s definitely something to consider. For my process, no. I don’t find it to be time consuming. I think your are right with the Etsy. I assume you’ll have less in fees for each transaction with Etsy not taking a cut if they are buying from your site I would imagine
@yonikki
@yonikki 5 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, payment apps incorporated into e-commerce websites take a percentage plus transaction fee. Similar to Square or PayPal ... roughly 3-4% plus .30 cents per transaction. I used Square at my first market and took in $300 through debit/credit. Only $250 was deposited into my account. That seems like a lot, but the vendor fee was $145, and parking was $25. At least with the website I don't have to sit at a booth all day and hope people don't bite into my bars of soap! 😂 Website requires shipping costs, packaging, and drive time ... so that's a giant chunk taken out of potential profit in addition to transaction fees.
@JerikaZimmerman
@JerikaZimmerman 5 ай бұрын
Etsy fees, like Nikki said, weren’t a big deal so much as the lack of traffic Etsy was sending my way. As a beginner, it was a great place to be, but as I grew it just became more of a headache and the orders became a trickle. Not worth it for me lol
