A really astonishing singer. A voice of pure steal. Definitely one of the greatest voices known to me.

If I'm Pharoah, I'd be saying, about one minute into this, "Yes, Mr. Hines -- I mean, Moses -- whatever you want. All expense paid. Valet service and everything -- back wages for your people, plus whatever interest you want. I'm hearing you loud and clear here, Moses . . ." Terrifyingly good.

One of the truly great bassos of the last century. He never sought great international fame & was not a "household name", unfortunately.

@danyarivw "And, if you want one of those pyramids put on wheels and fixed up for travel, you can have it -- or two or three --." I'm listening to this again, and it's just as terrifying the second time. But, also, I notice the deep feeling in the verses . . . nice contrasts.

I love Hines. But for my taste, this is excessive in every way. Paul Robeson's version, circa 1942-44 with Lawrence Brown, is much leaner in every way. It cuts to the core of this great spiritual. Hines' record here serms to be searching for that core.

It is perhaps a bit 'over-arranged'. ;-) Sometimes simpler is better. But Hines incredible voice still makes this worth a listen.
