Today, I sit down with Jerrod Carmichael to talk about acceptance and self appreciation. Jerrod shares his experiences and thoughts on turning uncomfortable conversations into meaningful relationships, why being honest with yourself makes it easier to open up and connect with others, and dealing with shame in your most vulnerable state.
Jerrod Carmichael is an American stand-up comedian, actor, writer, and producer. Carmichael gained recognition for his unique comedic style and thought-provoking material that often explores social issues, race, and his own personal experiences. He rose to prominence through his stand-up comedy specials, including "Love at the Store" (2014) and "8" (2017), which aired on HBO. He has also appeared in films such as "Neighbors" (2014) and its sequel "Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising" (2016), as well as "Transformers: The Last Knight" (2017).

Jay... Your ability to elleviate the tension expressed through Jerrod's body language unveiled a sensitive, intelligent, caring human being. I don't understand how a child's sexual preference impacts a relationship between a parent and child, then to add the component that God condones that rejection of a loved one. 😢 However, bless Jerrod and Jay for making it through this interview. It was definitely worth it.

Powerful episode. Honesty with oneself is a powerful tool for personal growth and connection with others. When we embrace our vulnerabilities and acknowledge any shame we may carry, it becomes easier to open up and form genuine connections. By being authentic and owning our experiences, we create an environment of trust and understanding, allowing others to do the same.

I think that's a sign of healing when you're able to laugh at the things that used to cause you pain. You were born into this huge space where moments are shortly experienced over a lifetime, if able to live a long life. If you actually enjoyed your life in 100 years it may seem too short.

It’s currently a battle that I’m trying to unpack & navigate. Especially in regards to content creation. It’s a constant battle of push & pull - a pull for wanting a creative outlet & the “pushing it all away” to maintain & preserve authenticity & warmth in my life. 😅

This is what I wanted to point out and bring clarity to. I have come to learn from certain people that are authentic and still private. There has to be a difference between the job/work/public and then your personal life. Having a private life does not mean it is a secret. A secret is hidden even from the people in your private life. You cannot say ''you did not openly discuss your depression'' well that is a private matter. I discuss it with my therapist and my family and it is not a secret, it is private. Unless I want to share it and it is part of my work. The lines here are thin and blurry between secrecy and privacy because of societal pressure (social media in this case).

Jerrod what's this thing you've started doing for putting your hand in your shirt...I know you probably do it innocently but my brain can't help but interpret it as a 'gay tendency' which is wrong of me but it is what it is. I love your work though, I think you're one of the greats!!!
