This interview resonated with me. How vulnerable and awkward he was in that moment talking about his parents and still being respectful. The way Seth allowed Jerrod to speak and still finding the fine line of humor. Well done!

“I think my family lives inside an elephant” man I related to that. Love his candor and his humor all the love to him.

He is expressing a level of vulnerability that is extremely rare. He’s lovely, he’s humble, he’s living in the truth of his moment. I love seeing this. I find it so hard to connect with people because seemingly everyone wears a social veneer. He is truly being honest about who he is and it’s beautiful. I wish there were more people like him.

Awesome interview. Jerrod seems so thoughtful and genuine. It’s refreshing to see a host let someone express themselves so openly without trying to dominate the conversation.

All of my mom instincts told me to hold Jerrod during this interview and I'm glad Seth does hug him at the end. It says a lot about Seth's interview skills that he didn't try to steer him away from the deep and vulnerable content but embraced it and accepted the emotion without judgement.

I have no idea who he is, or anything about his work, but this is very possibly my favorite interview on LNwSM that I have ever watched. It's just such a rare moment of uncut honestly, and humility, I don't think I have ever felt so much like I was actually present for the conversation. I wish Jerrod all the best in his process of finding a comfortable place in his family life, but also wish I could gently remind him that he will always have a supporting family in the LGBTQIA+ community.

What a beautiful conversation I just witnessed. Jerrod opening up about his family was very touching and relatable. I really hope his family realise that he’s still their talented, funny, genuine son and learn to accept all of him like mine eventually did. And kudos to Seth for being so considerate of Jerrod’s feelings, allowing him to speak freely and balancing the comedy & the importance of the conversation masterfully.

That moment about the "sins"... whew, so much pain there... they all need to heal. I hope the parents educate themselves and move on. He's lovely, smart and funny. I wish him much success and happiness.

Definitely not what you want to hear from your mom right before going on national television. 😢 So unbelievably raw, in the moment. You can see how torn he is, very heart wrenching.

“I’m learning how to receive love” - what a great sentence. Me too. My dogs taught me how to receive love.

he needs to talk, to ramble and vent or cry and laugh; it is written all over his face. i hope he has a great support system that will be with him while he processes this. It's a lot to come out; even more so to do it as a black man, especially within our own community. I'm glad Seth seemed to understand that he was dealing with his emotions on the fly and just let him get it out. I wish the actual best for him in finding that inner peace we all need after removing such a huge weight from our souls.

"It was almost very nice." Just heartbreaking. And amazing that he can bring that to share. This was awkward and painful to watch at times, but so compelling and engaging. It is quite literally what I want from art. It feels real and worthwhile.

“The elephant is the room” hoo boy, does that ever resonate with me. All support in the world to this man. I appreciate someone bringing their heaviness onstage like this because it helps us all to carry our own. It’s so easy to feel alone because nobody talks about the dark things they carry. In reality we are all connected by the pain and the joy that is being human.

Jerrod’s special “Rothaniel” was so well done. While explaining the details of his father’s infidelity and how his environment chose to overlook it, he was highlighting how people are often at peace with their own sins. Yet, when it comes to individuals who come out as gay, people find that to be an unforgivable sin. He says that his mother stated that his sins would tear the family apart. The hypocrisy is wild. Well done, Jerrod.

Rothaniel was reallly moving. It was like I knew he was going to do it, the moment i saw him hit the stage 🥰. I related to everything he said about family secrets and being aware of them as a child. And it was beautifully shot.

It's pretty bloody rare to see someone allowed to talk as necessary at length without cutting to commercial. This was beautiful.

I just finished watching his HBO Special and I must say it has to be one of the BEST specials I have ever seen thus far. This was one of the best interviews I have ever seen on any TV show. News or talk. He is so open and vulnerable. Seth you knocked it out of the park in allowing his measured responses.

Nice to see such a real, raw interview with such nice guy. It reminds me that we forget sometimes now that being openly gay has become so much more main stream that is still such a struggle for so many who have to deal with acceptance from their family members.

Really appreciate that SM uses youtube to allow time for this real conversation. Carmichael’s openness about his talk with his Mom will help a lot of young people feel seen. He was excellent on SNL and his energy seemed to lift the whole show.

I didn't really know Jerrod Carmichael before this, I've only heard about the special (and I will watch it now!) but this was amazing and I just want to send him all the love in the world. Coming out--especially the doing it over and over and over part, especially to halfway acceptance rather than full support--is so hard, but being like this in the public sphere is nothing short of inspiring. We use that word too much, maybe, but I'm genuinely meaning it right now. You can FEEL this. I hope he realizes how much being real in this way resonates and reverberates out to people who will need it more than he'll know. And I hope it keeps echoing back to him and he gets all the kinds of love and support that he needs. 💜🌈

I was SO impressed with him when seeing his monologue on SNL and am even more so now. "I am learning how to receive love..." he is really disarming. What a beautiful human being he is...I hope his parents are very proud of him.

This was an incredibly special few minutes of TV. That was so vulnerable and courageous of Jerrod to open up like that, and it’s the kind of interview that could only happen on Late Night. That Seth and his team have created a show that has room for this kind of conversation is wonderful. I used to be a features reporter and would often have to talk to people about personal, traumatic events, but never while managing a studio audience - how Seth conducted this interview speaks highly of his own character. I watched it as it aired and nearly burst into tears when they desk hugged at the end and Seth wouldn’t let him go. We all need that sometimes. Some of us need it more. It’s been really scary and exhausting to see the vitriol with which bigots have been going after queer people generally (and trans people earlier) - not to mention that so much of the public seems desensitized to it all. This interview made me feel safe and cozy and like I could breathe more easily for a few minutes. I hope Jerrod finds whatever peace he needs to move forward and that he knows he’ll always have a family in both the LGBTQ+ community and in New Yorkers.

It feels like a Dick Cavett show or something. Because the conversation is so personal and not necessary packed with jokes. I love it.

Wow, this was a fantastic interview. Seth is quite adept in conducting and maneuvering with all sensitivity throughout this interview. He created a safe and comfortable environment for Jerrod to open up and share personal and private thoughts. Also props to Seth's audience. They also accepted and responded to the interview in a very mature and respectful manner. Many of the other show's audiences i.e. Bill Maher (the worst audience) Jimmy Fallon, Steven Colbert are just a bunch of wooing and clapping seals. Laughing and woo wooing anything and everything said. Even for the most delicate of subject matters. Seth's show is at a higher level of maturity and intelligence and sensitivity. Other shows would not be able to handle this interview at all. Thank you Seth to raising the bar.

What a valuable, rare, and touching interaction.This is what you get when you don't have these constant over-rehearsed and canned late-night interviews. Its clear Jerrod is genuinely - and maybe torturously -living out what millions of us have done before and millions of us will do tomorrow and next week. As far as the lbgt+ movement has come - how more normalized and accepted it appears -telling your parents about your sexuality remains a singular experience - difficult beyond any expectations, terrifying, life-changing. Its one of those few moments in life that is truly a right of passage. Its an accomplishment like no other. Congratulations, Jerrod. Hope to bump into you on Grindr some day.

This was such a beautiful interview, so good I had to immediately watch it again. I discovered Jerrod thanks to SNL and did not know his story until this interview. Impressive how open he is with emotions in the moment. I wish him the best in life. Seth Meyers has always been one of the best with interviews and this just clearly shows why. He is so informed and in tune with his guests. Amazing how he can pivot when emotions change.

What a gift Jerrod is! He's doing some important work healing himself, trying to heal his family and allowing us all in with these little glimpses into his heart and mind. He is visibly uncomfortable, he’s sweating and nervous. I get like that when my anxiety kicks in. He’s joking all around this subject but he is strong for talking through it.

Wow! This was so moving and powerful, he was obviously still processing the call...he was so exposed. I'm amazed by the strength it must have taken to not freak out at any point and just say, "it's too much. I need more time, reschedule me"

Jerrod is dope, razor sharp mind. "The Elephant is the Room" can be the title of his next special or a book. I am glad he came out and hope his family stops tripping on it. If they alienate him, just for being true to himself it will be their loss and a needless pain for all.

I know that the people who do monologs at SNL have his help of writers, but I really loved Jerrord Carmichael's delivery of the monologue last Saturday.

I love the love in the comments. He should stay in NY and take the love in, no matter how odd it may feel. I have a child who is part of the lgbtqia+ community and he has told me and his younger sister. Not his dad. Not anyone else, even though he is loved immensely by everyone and it would change nothing. He feels some level of concern that it would. I hate that he feels that for something he has no control over. Just ❤️

As a baby boomer, I came out to my folks 50 years ago. While at first they had a tough time handling that reality, they quickly came around. Cultural differences aside, I think it’s a fair assessment, that many parents feel “they did something wrong”. (at least when I came out) Even when my mom, came to accept my being a lesbian, she asked that I not reveal this aspect of my identity to my grand dad (her father). In truth, as much she said, “he wouldn’t understand”, in retrospect, I think she was afraid (whether real or imagined) of how he would judge her, as lacking as a parent. It’s about time, once and for all that any LGBTQ identified person across our planet just be themselves, and it’s a non issue. Bravo to Jerrod for standing up and speaking truthfully in such a public forum. The more visible we are, and are loved and respected, the less the fear mongers can force us back into their closets!

Jerrod, to me, is one of the most thought-provoking comedians around. His sitcom offered such nuance and it's a shame we didn't get more of it. His sense of style is also impeccable I kinda want to see him do a fashion collab with Tyler or something.

Hadn't heard of him until SNL, and then I fell in love with him. People are hungry for real connection and emotion.

Stay strong. It's a process for alot of families. When I came out my mom could do nothing but cry. I got told I was spiritually dead. I just hadn't met the right woman blah blah blah. Now my partner of 9 years and my mom talk almost as much as I do to her. He is there son just like I am. And they are more open about it when people ask than I am It takes people some time and I hope that his comes around.
