As always your interpretation is right on, it's sarcastic "raised a son so well", not so much. Faye, you might like Jerry's song "Mr. Bojangles" very sweet song.

The story is Ray Willie Hubbard Jerry Jeff Walker Townes Van Zandt and a couple other songwriters were in a house in Clovis New Mexico in the late 60s. writing. They ran out of beer and it was Ray's turn to buy. Well these guys looked like hippies and there were only two places to buy beer a hippie bar and a redneck bar. The redneck bar was closer. Ray goes in to the redneck bar to buy off sales and is taunted and threatened by the rednecks for looking different. Even by a mother and her adult son who said "You want my boy to kick your ass hippie?" Well Ray barley got out of there and the song just came out
