Jerry reed was never one to want to live the hollywood high life riding around in expensive cars and living in a mansion. He bought an average house in an average neiborhood in Nashville TN. and owned a pickup truck til the day he died. He was down to earth, a true country gentleman, a comical character with a good since of humor and a friend to everybody. What more could you ask for. Gone but not forgotten.

Jerry Reed was, in a way, like "country music's" Hendrix. Very unique and original. the songs he wrote on guitar will never die. I think he'll be more highly regarded, than he already its, in 20 or 30 years. The guy was unbelievable. And humble! even chet atkins said it took him A WHILE to figure out what Reed was doing.

This guy is legit one of the greatest guitar players of all time and had such little ego he didn’t feel the need to show it off, he was more concerned with being funny and doing funny novelty songs. Nobody in Nashville played exactly like Jerry. He had his own licks that were not part of the mainstream signature sound. Jerry was chickin pickin and burnin up the double stops with his classic Amos Moses guitar tone long before that style of playing was popular. What a great talent and very humble man. My stage manager and I had comedown time before we played at a bar that night and were walking the streets of Nashville about 15 years ago and Jerry was coming out of one of the bars, broad daylight, and Scott punches me in the chest and exclaims "That's Jerry Reed!" and smooth as can be Jerry slips his sunglasses down to the tip of his nose and looks eye to eye with us and says "what's left of him son" and pushed his shades back up and was gone before we could fully grasp hold of what just happened.

I love Jerry's whole demeanor.He reminds me of my older brother Bill who's a fishing guide off of Vancouver Island.Bill has a homestead on one of the smaller islands with his wife where they raised two boys.When I make it over there Bill picks up his guitar or mandolin and will wander around the yard lost in his own world picking away. Occasionally he'll stop and have a pinch of chewing tobacco like Jerry.Anyway it's a comfort knowing that there are still real people on the planet ya know?

I just discovered this. For a student of fingerstyle, it is a treasure. "The Claw" is one of the defining pieces of the style, and to see and hear the creator himself playing it and discussing it is invaluable. Jerry's remark about sounding "definitive" is key. Although he's rusty and years past his prime, you can hear that definitive crispness (and you see how he really does favor the 2nd and 3rd fingers on the right hand). "The Claw" was never supposed to be about speed. It is not a sprint. It's a dance, and when Jerry plays it it sounds and feels faster than it really is.

Towards the end, his health hit him on all sides. He had emphysema, and a tremor in one of his hands (I think the right one). He raised his price kinda high on purpose, he only wanted the shows that really wanted him. One of my friends managed him during that phase of his career.

Rusty and past his prime..........Son, you better be one hell of a picker to be judging Jerry Reed!! I'm pretty sure that Brent Mason, Pat Berguson, Richard Smith, Thom Bresh, Tommy Emmanuel etc,...etc,... respect Ole' Jerry enough to not be judging Jerry, full stop! Hush your mouth, Son, 'nuff said!

@JDCullum 10 жыл бұрын
Simo' James My friend, I'm sorry if you think he's in his prime here, but I beg to differ (and I'll wager any one of those heavyweights would agree with me). At any rate, the legacy of Jerry Reed lies in the licks, those flashes of lightning that expanded enlarged the repertoire of guitar music; arguably creating "fingerstyle" itself. I think that for a while Jerry may have disdained those gems he invented, but towards the latter part of his life I think he saw that his guitar innovations would long outlive "Smokey & The Bandit." Credit also goes to John Knowles for having the wisdom to write this stuff out (and provide some genius arrangements of his own). Best, JD
@SimoJames1
@SimoJames1 10 жыл бұрын
Well Sir, I do agree with you that Jerry at this stage was certainly not at the peek of his playing, but I wouldn't agree that he 'created' fingerstyle! Even the style he's best known for can be easily traced back to Chet, Merle Travis and even Mose Rager before that, and thats not even taking into consideration, the Delta blues stylists, the Piedmont pickers, the bluegrass guys, Doc Watson et al,..., but I take your point never the less, that Jerry wasn't at his best later in life, but still the charisma is more than enough...that Ole' Boy forgot more than we'll ever remember when it comes to picking! I own over 40 of Jerry's albums and soundtracks (albeit some are a bit 'dodgy' in origin...haha), but lets just say, Son, when your as hot as Jerry, your hot as hell, Son! Full kudos to John Knowles, Craig Dobbins, Tommy Emmanuel and all those boys that are still payin' it forward!! Peace

Simo' James Chet , Merle and Jerry all had their own styles. They didn't sound anything alike. As far as using the fingers and thumb, there were black pickers back in the '20' and 30's doing that.

Jerry Reed was a freak of nature and I mean this in the very best way. His talent was freakishly natural and raw -- he was truly a master player. Even the greats like Eric Johnson are humbled by his playing -- EJ's 'Tribute to Jerry Reed' is proof of this. He has been a major influence on countless players, and yet it's a shame that many are unfamiliar with his work. The problem is that many dismiss him as too "corny" or other such nonsense. It's a shame they can't be bothered to turn off the Kardashians and turn down their electronic dance music -- which is perfectly in key and perfectly temporally quantized --and give Jerry's pickin' a chance to blow their narrow minds. Their loss. Long live Jerry's sounds!

I think by now most people have forgotten about smokey and the bandit and he is really remembered and revered by musicians who understand his talent, as it should be, although those movies were lots of fun too. But most movie fans don't quite realize that as a guitar player he was a giant. Not just a famous hot player, like say Glen Campbell, but a real innovator who influenced thousands of players.

Jerry Reed and JJ Cale are two of the most underrated guitarists of all time. I love them both for their originality and down to earth good nature. RIP both .

Dak TirQue jerry was great in everything. JJ Cale was a great guitarist and songwriter but he never seemed like he put any emotion into his singing. Listening to him sing and it sounds like he’s bored or tired of singing the song.

It's so bizarre experiencing this video's perspective... this down home guy looking for his dip, slouching in the same comfy chair my dad ruled when I was a kid in a what looks like every Tennessee house I ever lived in growing up. It's JERRY REED... I keep feeling like he should explode in a cloud of guitar strings, tobacco dust and Opry, but there he sits, kind as you please. You want to give the guy a hug... this video makes it feel like he'd just lean in and take it, then chuckle and get back to playing.

Total show business package. Recognized guitar master, substantial contributor to the field, genuine comedic personality that prints to film, an iconic voice, an iconic look, and soul beyond our power to appreciate. As to that last element: I suspect he had limited vocal range, but he often covered standards much like Louis Armstrong, singing a few carefully chosen notes around the melody to wind up with something recognizable but original and, if you'll excuse me for saying so, jazzy. And he made it look and sound effortless, as if he was just up there having some fun, because he was. If you hear somebody say they don't make em like Jerry anymore, you tell them they never did. There was only one Jerry Reed.

Today this came across my suggestion feeds and I was blown away with a big smile on my face. I cannot believe I got to see this video today. Jerry Reed has always been one of my heroes. I don't play the guitar but my dad did professionally I play drums. I remember when I was a little boy probably 15 years old I so bad wanted to drive tractor trailers when I got older and I will listen to country music and relate to it. there was an old man that lived upstairs from us and he would come home every night with his little briefcase and he was a tractor-trailer driver his name was Tom. He would always stop down stairs and give me something that had to do with either country music or trucks and he gave me this cassette tape of Jerry Reed titled the man with the golden thumb. I wore that cassette out and was never able to find it again until the internet opened up and I was able to find that music. 51 years old now and driving tractor trailers for 30 years and every day I listen to all of Jerry's music. I never got to meet that man or go to any of his concerts but he is just my idol. Someday in the distant future by the grace of God I'm going to get to sit down and have a drink with that man. RIP Mr Reed

Wow Jerry playing a Langejans guitar how cool. I used to work for Cusack Music in Holland and had Del refret my Les Paul just before he retired. So cool to see the influence I got to see coming from my hometown. Thanks for this.
