This was absolutely fascinating I didn't think I could sit through an hour about color but wow did I learn and was never bored! I always thought that black+yellow=green was actually a "mistake" and never even considered the range of possibilities! I want to go back through the video again and take notes. The more often I happen upon these art tutorials the more I appreciate that I never went to any art school beyond HS. I have just always always loved the old masters and read about them and their techniques. I could just look at a Vermeer for hours. I AM happy that I happened upon yours today. Serendipity : )

I was in a normal school and our art teacher told us not to use black. We asked the question "why?" and the answer was not too bad, I think. He said, because it doesn`t exist in nature. But we also learned white and black are NO colours, so your explanation of black being a colour (you make a colour choice) is an eye-opener and very helpful.

Great video John. I went to NYAA early 2003. I remember your class. I was in Dan Thompson‘s class and Jon DeMartin. I studied Munsell but the teacher was a Albertz advocate. I went to school visual arts and that’s how I learned. I was so happy to hear you say that a color and value changes depending on the color next to it. No one ever explained why I shouldn’t use black and I don’t really use black only when I need it. Absolutely loved your video.

Excellent video! This artist is articulate, organized and has a dry wit, so I am appreciative to have this opportunity to be in his studio, so to speak. Thank you, Mr. Wellington, and thank you, Jerry’s, for hosting a true professional artist/teacher. I’ve heard about using black to make green mixes, but it’s better to see an actual demo of how it works, and how black works with other pigments. Cool. That Wellington green is gorgeous, with a great range. To keep painting fresh for me, I set up thought experiments, so I feel like I’m exploring or solving puzzles: “what if I try this? Oops, that worked differently than I expected…”. Technical term of Oops! may be repeated often, haha.

Ceation in discovery of multiple found options with tried and true revelations. Rules are for rigid cliques and kindred spirite fly free of these. A great lesson you designed about black. My art teacher taught me that shadows have colour. We did an experiment with coloured spatulas, where everyone threw out purple. In oils I love to use deep maroon and a touch of purple to be the backgeound of trees in a forest. An Autumn leaf exercise we had to mix al the colours we saw by a "Rule!" by 4 degrees. YYYR ( yellow x3 plus red) etc. Then simply placing the colours in the shapes within the shapes where theu fell. No drawing of the leaf. Wonderful results. A lesson from all the teachers help us to grow as we experience successes along the way. Rosie Hoy New Zealand

Thank you so much for this video. I have learned more from you than any video I have seen in a while. I too have been drawing since my very early childhood. I found out in my older adulthood that I can actually paint. I love, love, love to paint. Thank you so much…. PS: I go to “Jerry’s” in Greensboro, NC, and In Knoxville, TN. I am so smitten with these stores.we just need more products in Greensboro. So many colleges and universities here. Thank you again John. Jo Burrow, Kernersville, NC

Thank you for the class! I loved it! I love art and have been working on it mostly learning on my own. Color has been the place where I struggle but your class helped me so much! You inspire me to go play tomorrow! Thank you very much! I look forward to learning more from you!

Thank you, your demo was very informative. It gives us permission to play and learn more about color mixing. This will be helpful when painting with acrylics.

I learned this in art school. They gave a good explanation. Once we learned to get a full range without black, we can use black not just for shadows, but to use it as a color.

I’ve always understood that ‘pure’ black makes the other colors look flat, although I must admit I don’t dislike my paintings I made before I religiously started following this rule. Still watching the demo; it’s great!

Thank you! I’ve heard not to use black. This was so interesting and informative. It presented new ways to think about palette colors! I will look for more instruction from this artist/teacher.
