My thoughts on the new 15" MacBook Air after 4 weeks of use. After one month I have been able to put the Air through its paces and see what it can and can't do. These are my overall thoughts on Apple's latest new MacBook. And fingerprints!

I actually think the 13 inch MacBook Air is the perfect “couch computer”. Switching from a 15-16inch windows laptop to the 13 inch has made a huge difference in feeling like I have the portability to carry it around. It’s not just the weight or how thin it is either. It’s easy to hold it with one hand and the lack of a fan that does it for me.

Well, I just bought my wife the 1TB 16GB model for her birthday next week, and reckon she will be over the moon with it. And that’s the thing with all the Apple gear, just because person A has something negative to say about a product, person B will probably love it! :)

Just curious, if the fingerprints on the Midnight chassis were bothering you, why not return it or exchange it at the nearest Apple store? Not enough time to do so? Great video, as always.

100% right, ALWAYS go for the ram first, although it's so stingy from Apple to put 256gb in 2023 for $1299.

I agree about the new design, it's one of the reasons I purchased an M2 MBA 13. I also prefer the silver model and the smaller size for portability (it's used primarily as my travel device). I opted for the base model because spec'ing up the memory and storage didn't make sense to me. That would have put the price into MBP 14 territory and I just didn't need that much power in a portable.

@@JerrySchulze unfortunately it’s not suitable for majority of users. I tried the base model and the higher 16gb ram with 1 tb… it’s slow, n struggles to run multiple apps at same time which as a young student or professional we need… Form factor, display, Battery and weight are the only pros… it’s not snappy or anywhere near what M1 Air was with 16gb ram or my pro devic m1pro 14in were… if you are use to 120hz refresh rate, you will notice the difference too along with clarity for HDR or graphic editing task n I’m not a heavy user user…

I sold my MBP M1 Pro 14 inch for $1650 and went for the base model M2 MBA new for $950. Is it a downgrade? Definitely. But I don’t really use the pro features much and i got $700 extra money back. For my usage, the MBA base is more suitable, i got excellent portability and much better battery life.

I have the base model and don't use it for my heavy lifting; my M1 iMac does all that. I got the MacBook Air 15" to use when I travel, just for basic photo and video editing. It's my first Apple laptop and I've had it since April, I've not edited video on it yet but have edited photos in Adobe Camera Raw and Photoshop with no issues.

I really want to love it. My major problem is that I use Mac for heavy load office usage. I don’t do video editing. I simply have too many tasks that I can’t finish and have to leave them open. MacBook Air is not a good choice when you have to configure it to 16+512 (closer to MBP14), but I’ve already been using a 32+1T 2018 for 5 years.

I guarantee that the M2 air will perform better than that 2018 machine but if you can score a refurb or discounted m1 MacBook Pro, you will be super happy.

The key issue that limits it is the external display count...I have three external monitors, and I tried Mac mini for external monitors with universal control. Unfortunately, the Logitech Options+ driver is a disaster incompatible with universal control...

Lack of SD Card Reader kind of a deal breaker for me… my old MacBook Air had one, so convenient to pop in the card to grab my photos off my camera while traveling

Great review I have the base model of the 15” and its great. Run office apps fine and fast. Web browser multi no problem. Always use cloud for easy access. But for people who need or just wants more then get it. But the difference between need and want can cost a few hundred bucks more.

It would have been nice if you actually showed us video of you using it on a couch. I just bought the 13" spec'd up with 16gb ram and 1tb SSD, was using it in bed when I woke up this morning, using Adobe Illustrator. Was gonna get the 15", but it looks a bit "oversize" to me.

Well the look will depend on the size of the person. I am 5’6 and it’s comfortable for me to use on a couch.

My brother has the M1 MacBook Air, I have the M2. Both are base models. I have used his before and honestly there is not much difference. The most noticeable upgrades on the M2 model is that it has better webcams, better speakers, better connectivity options (with MagSafe), faster charging, even lighter, better looking (personal opinion), larger function keys, slightly larger screen (but with a notch). I would say if you have the M1 MBA, don't get the M2 MBA, else get the pro if you really want an upgrade in power. But if you have those intel Macs, or just never own a MacBook before, the M2 MBA is kinda great

After some consideration im planning buying a Mac mini with 16gigs Ram. I have a monitor, mouse and keyboard which can be used for macs. And i feel mac mini with 16gigs of RAM is good value. Most of my work sitting in front of a computer. Do you think Mac mini is a better option than a Macbook?

As someone who lives in a Tropical Country, I have to Pause for a Second as the Ambient Temperature reaches 107°F in Summer, which is Half the Year. 😅

I like your reviews. I think Apple should have made the base MacBook Air 15" 16Gb ram and 500Gb ssd. I'm not sure your comment is correct that if you want to upgrade go with ram first. Max tech have shown that even if you add and external ssd it's transfer speed is slowed down by the slow speed of the 256 single nand ssd (half the speed of the 500GB). So you basically have to upgrade ram AND ssd. And yes the midnight colour looks good until you touch it and it goes all fingerprinty.

It will still cost more for a new 14” than an air with upgrades. If you can afford it, the pro is a better computer in every way. If you can find a refurb from Apple, that would be the best.

24gb is the way to go and enjoy this couch computer because it’s convenient to just open the lid at a coffee shop with everything you had and continue from there

Would u a buy a MBA 15 8/256 at $950 or MBA 15 16/512 at $1450? Im replacing 2015 MBP 16/256 that has 25gb SSD space available. I ordered the base bec it was cheapest price but i have not accepted order yet.

Great video as always. Can you try AutoCAD 2024 (Apple Silicon Native), Fusion 360 (Rosetta 2), Shapr3D (Apple Silicon Native) and SolidWorks (using Parallels Desktop). It would be cool to see the new 15 inch MacBook Air vs the 16 inch M2 Pro base MacBook Pro CAD software performance comparison.

I have MacBook Pro 14" M1 and it works fine for me. But I am in need of a secondary machine mainly for zoom calls when my 14" is at work. I want to buy MacBook Air M2 just the base model but I am confused for its size. On apple refurbished store, I can get MacBook Air 13" for $929 vs 15" for $1299.. Is few hundred dollars extra worth it for extra screen size or 13" MacBook will just do fine for me ???

⁠⁠@@manalipatel13m2 air 15in isn’t worth buying if you are coming from m1pro 14in… Apple’s M1 chip in Pro or Air were superior compared to m2s… I would wait for m3 if it’s not an urgency to have another laptop… otherwise the 13in M1 is a better purchase under $900

I am a normal user without media editing. I use watch youtube, browsing website. I got a deal 600 dollars more (after tax) of macbook pro 14 entry level. Is it worth to keep it or buy a macbook air 15

The pro is going to be more powerful so will last longer performance wise. Better screen, better speakers, just better overall. If you already have it, keep it.

I actually do hope that they keep the MidNight color for future MacBook Airs. I have the MidNight color MBA 13 inch base model rn. I love the color of it even with my fingerprints on it. I think that future MacBook Airs should also have special colors to choose from. The Starlight and MidNight are actually not new colors (they were on iPhones) but I also hope that future MacBook Airs get colors (other than silver and space grey). Color options of the Airs should be more than the pros (same with the iPad Airs and iPad Pros)

Its interesting that you recommend upgrading the RAM ahead of that slow ssd, given that you directly experienced the stutter caused by the system swapping to a slow ssd. I was wondering though, wouldn't upgrading to 512gb ssd give more bang for the buck in the sense that one gets a much larger overhead for any memory usage beyond 8gb? Whereas if we upgrade to 16gb then there's a new hard limit again. Beyond 16gb any swap will STILL cause stutter. The reason I'm asking is because I'm currently using a base model M1 macbook air & I've NEVER experienced stutter even once, and my memory is always almost full, with tons & tons of swap being used all the time.

You don't want to be swapping at all, let alone all the time. If you need more RAM, get more RAM.

I think the slow SSD issue is really exaggerated. Yes, it is slower but most people get the MBAs don't do that demanding data transfers. If you are really afraid that the SSD is too slow, get the 14-inch pros instead. Imo, unified memory is always more important than SSD.

@@PerpetualPreponderer Unified memory impacts performance more. Tho upgrading both is also an option (it costs a lot tho). If you don't need 512 GB of storage, then upgrade the Unified memory. If you switching from a Mac, you can check your current storage used. SSD upgrade is only worth it if you really need the storage.

@@vincentleong9701 definitely don't need the storage, and in any case even if need just extra storage i would never pay what apple asks, i'd simply get an external ssd. also upgrading both is not an option for me. that is why i've been torn. i mean, in normal cases it would be a no brainer, just upgrade the ram. but in this situation, i was wondering, because of the way macos handles swap, and if upgrading to 512gb ssd will effectively give me something like 24 or even 32gb memory since the system can just "swap away to glory", for lack of a better explanation, lol.

Im using a windows laptop which costs as much as an Macbook. Even with 16GB ram the amount of tabs i open its struggling. May be i will upgrade the RAM. But would a Macbook be as good as the windows in that regard?.

Do you know what cpu you have? Either way I can pretty much guarantee that the Mac will perform better.

@@JerrySchulze Yes, Im using a Core-i7 9th gen processor with a RTX 2060. The laptop is a couple of years old. Im looking for a Laptop that can perform faster. I do deal with writing proposals around 300 pages and i had to go through so many research materials hence the amount of tabs. Apart from that excel sheets and PDF edits, Docusign are all i use on my laptop. I dont do video edits or anything. Just whole lot of documents, research, writing and sometimes data analysis. Im trying to upgrade my current setup to a better laptop with long battery life. And performance is key here.

Do you have a budget in mind? I am thinking if you want the air you may want to upgrade the storage and ram and at that point does a pro make more sense? I say this because of the size of the docs and with as many tabs as you want I am assuming using Chrome? Are you in a country that allows returns? you could always give it a shot for 2 weeks.

A bit overrated for those outside of the Apple ecosystem. Their M1 MacBook Air and the M2 Mac Mini are better for average consumers from a value standpoint. For those that do not work a professional office job or are allowed to work from home professionally, the M2 Mac Mini is better with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of SSD. The M1 MacBook Air is lower priced for a 16/512 GB setup. Only issue is the web camera for the M1 Air, but an iPhone can replace the web camera.

No, with only 8gb ram, the laptop will constantly abuse swap, lowering the lifetime of it

I can’t decide if i buy the new 15 inch Macbook Air with 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD and an iPad Pro 12.9 M2 with 256GB of storage or spend my complete budget on the 16 inch MBP with M2 Pro and forget about the ipad.

I used iPad as my main computer for almost 2 years. iPadOS is still limited compared to Mac and can’t do everything but some things are better on iPad. If you don’t NEED the performance of the pro then you may be happier with 2 devices that are both good for certain things.

Depends on needs. macOS is still far more powerful and easier for many things. iPads also have their strengths.

@@JerrySchulze sure ,but as some suggested that they may be just reading emails,using some office apps it would be ideal,watching the occasional Netflix movie. Although I was more thinking along the line screen size to be truthful.
