Where did the fresh water come from in such a dry climate? I know of the aqueducts, but where did they start (or originate from) and how did they collect that volume of fresh water?

A Mikva is a ritual bath where people would wash themselves and be considered cleansed (cleaned) in order to perform some religious act IE pray, offer a sacrifice, enter the temple grounds, etc.

Quoting the Apple computer Dictionary app: mikveh | ˈmikvə | (also mikva or mikvah) noun (plural mikvehs or mikvahs or mikvoth | mēkˈvōt | or mikvot | mēkˈvōt | or mikvos | mēkˈvəz, -ˈvōs | ) • a bath in which certain Jewish ritual purifications are performed. • ORIGIN mid 19th century: from Yiddish mikve, from Hebrew miqweh, literally ‘collection (usually of water)’. Don't think it has anything to do with the "original baptism." [1 Corinthians 10:1-2]

@@zeezee2924 as you can see mikva is thousands of yrs old - Jews follow the command in the Torah - either use a pool big enough or a river or sea - which John - a Jew- used when he baptized Jews among them, Jesus - the rules of mikvah changed during the diaspora - and the water now must be still - yet many Jews return to immerse themselves in rivers and sea -
