@@angelinashankle75 Even so, that doesn't mean his feelings of hurt and betrayal don't matter. She chose to publicly trash talk him instead of just confronting him directly. She chose to lie to him for YEARS, even back when they were just friends. And he did seem to be coming around to possibly accepting the situation, until his family ended up the the Queen's crosshairs. It's not just about Penelope. Her choices have consequences, and not just for herself. Discretion is the better part of valour, and there is a time and a place for putting yourself first, but sometimes you have to think about others too. If she genuinely believes that her pride is more important, that's her prerogative, but Colin does not have to share that opinion, nor should anyone expect him to. He has just as much right to his feelings as Pen does. After all, she did say she wanted the real Colin, with all his emotions. She doesn't get to take that back now. When he hurt her, he put in the work to fix it. Now, she's hurting him. She created this situation. She needs to step up and fix it, or accept the consequences.

They are amazing for the time and culture, social groups, restraints for women, etc. But they are also great love stories and always worth a read...

This is extremely biased. Colin’s spur of the moment comment is way worse than what Penelope wrote about him. He is a Bridgerton and his word holds a lot of weight, him laughing and saying he would never date Pen making it sound like a ridiculous idea hurt her very small chances in the marriage mart. She already didn’t have any suitors, what Colin said made it even more impossible for her to find a match. Now what consequences did what Pen write really have for Colin? A hurt ego? No one other than him mentioned it.

​@@juanitaguerra5864 I don't agree Penelope is mad at Colin for saying he wouldn't marry her to his friends isn't meant to hurt her it was the truth at that time, he didn't have a crush on her and thought of her as a friend, she got mad at him cause she liked him and didn't think the same way as her which is unfair not everyone has to have a crush on her, then she wrote gossip about him cause he didn't have a crush on her that's weird

@@juanitaguerra5864 Yes, his comment did hurt her, and might have hurt her chances with those other men, and she has every right to be upset about it and tell him so. But think about it in terms of his character and history in the show. It's not in Colin's character to openly make fun of *any* woman like that, let alone his best friend who he's extremely protective of, and who he'd just promised to take care of less than an hour before. He has always stood up for Pen and defended her whenever anyone dared to say something negative about her in his presence (including her). It's far more likely that he simply meant to say that he wasn't courting her, but his wording was unintentionally hurtful. The fact that he doesn't even remember the incident when she brings it up supports this. If he'd chosen to step so far outside his character and values as to consciously mock his best friend to a random group of guys, I feel like he would remember that, and feel some amount of guilt over it. Especially since she completely cut him off after that and he spent the better part of a year wondering why. It seems like maybe that might have occurred to him. It's far more likely that this was a (hurtful) mistake rather than callousness or cruelty. That doesn't negate the harm it may have caused, but it does impact the way we evaluate their individual crimes. And as soon as it's brought to his attention, he immediately owns up to it, apologizes, and tries to make amends. Meanwhile, Penelope was intentionally lashing out in anger, and choosing to roast him to the entire ton. You said his word carries a lot of weight because he's a Bridgerton? Well, she was writing about him as Lady Whistledown, which arguably carries more weight than anyone besides the queen. Basically everyone in the ton accepts her word on anything she chooses to write. And it's about far more than a "hurt ego." Look at it from Colin's perspective for a moment. If you were going through some stuff and making some bad choices and, rather than come to you directly and privately, your best friend chose to lay all your mistakes and insecurities bare in front of the entire world in a gossip column, wouldn't you feel betrayed? Would those feelings go away simply because it didn't impact your social standing? The fact that it didn't hurt him socially doesn't change the hurt and betrayal he feels at knowing that the woman he loves/trusts most in the world chose to do that to him. And whereas he immediately owned up to it once his comment was brought to his attention, Penelope doubles down and tries to justify her actions (despite regretting it herself almost immediately after publishing). Colin is not without fault, but Penelope certainly isn't either. You can defend her hurt/anger over his comment without throwing him and his feelings under the bus.
