Jesse Marsch, head coach of Austrian Bundesliga champions Red Bull Salzburg, was the special guest for the second exclusive Coaches' Voice webinar of 2021.
Marsch has been with the Red Bull organisation since 2015, when he was hired as head coach of the New York Red Bulls; after three years in New York, he moved to Germany to act as assistant to Ralf Rangnick at RB Leipzig for a season before the move to Salzburg.
In this excerpt from a fascinating hour-long session, he focuses on one of the principles that underpins his tactical approach and which has been influenced by his work with Rangnick: pressing to score goals. He talks us through the concepts he works on to build the best possible pressing in his team, showing game footage to illustrate how these have been employed in the creation of chances and ultimately goals.

Felt sorry for Jesse. He had his team primed for Villarreal (they came into the match 0-2 down.) They scored early using the precise tactics he describes in this video. They then worked a beautiful move to set up an easy goal to go up 2-0 (2-2 on aggregate). Sucic had a wide open goal, an easy tap in. He missed. Somehow. The life of a manager is not easy.

Feels like a natural transition from a Bielsa team. Please make this happen.

I love Bielsa but i think and hope that Jesse will bring a more pragmatic sensible approach. Bielsa was a pure romantic but that had its shortcomings. Also I hope that Jesse can attract good players with his links to RB. Aaronson, Minamino, Laimer. Pity we didnt have a few hundred million lying around to bring haaland home and reuinite him with marsch

What shortcomings? Lmao, people are so sheepish. He made low level players overperform hugely.

@@tayzk5929 The shortcomings of conceding goals left right and centre and Leeds almost being relegated. Bielsa is great to watch as an opposing supporter and I hope Marsch is too. But I think he's a decent coach for Leeds to be honest.

With you being people who have a lot off insight access to some of the game's biggest names could you give an advice what are helpful tools to become a coach? Like sites/books to read, certain cources we could go through or just general advice how to develop in the game. And I also suggest you should make a video like that - different coaches explaining in details how they break into thr game and what help them do it. Awesome video, Jesse March is such a cool manager. His Salzburg team is pure joy to watch.

There is one thing i wonder and want to learn about that tactical discipline. If the oppenents prefer deep defence and to stay not high, what they do to get the ball back as soon as possible? The reason i asked this question is that every team dont build up with passing options and also there is some kind of teams using long ball when they are possesion. Yes its useful against that sort of teams when they have ball but what is the plan for other half of the pitch?
@abdullahasif4275
@abdullahasif4275 2 жыл бұрын
Opponenets who build-up from deep can be countered with a high-line and different forms of Gegenpressing (see 6:46). Winning the ball back higher up the field i.e. closer to the final third gives a better chance of scoring as opposition transitioning to out of possession will not be positioned effectively. As with long balls, opposition deploy target men such as Lukaku, Calvert-Lewin, Chris Wood or fast runners in behind (an example being Vinicius Jr's 1st goal vs Liverpool as Kroos was not being pressed). Overall, a high-line with intense, continual pressing must be implemented otherwise it can be suicidal, defensively.
