Literally this. It felt so weird having a dance number for this song until I realized it was a direct way of showing how if Luisa shows the slightest bit of vulnerability she feels like she needs to cover it up, be entertaining, pretend everything is fine.

My favorite part that no one really comments on is "the ship doesn't swerve as it heard how big the iceberg is" - the ship (the family) doesn't bother trying to save themselves, they just rely on her to fix it (by breaking the easily avoidable iceberg)... that gets me every time

I read this more as Luisa saying that she can't afford to flinch or hesitate in her duties, no matter how overwhelming they are (and this being an unhealthy thing since, well, icebergs sink ships), but I also like your interpretation!
@RPGLover87
@RPGLover87 2 жыл бұрын
It's also misspelt in the subtitles - it's actually "The ship doesn't swerve HAS it heard how big the iceberg is?" It's a question, Luisa is saying "Why won't you just MOVE out of the way of the bad thing?!"

The line about the iceberg is about how big the issue really is below the surface. The part that the ship can’t see… while from above the surface of the water the iceberg looked small .. under the surface it was a huge obstacle. This is a metaphor for Luisa being given what appears to everyone else to be a small manageable task.. but underneath, Luisa has this built up huge problem that no one else can see. The ship is the family in this sense… the iceberg is Luisa’s mental health.

Wow, I've seen a few comments here and there talking about how the burros ruined the feel of the number, but with THAT thought in mind, yeah, I can totally see it. Granted, at the beginning of the song she was rounding up them up because they had gotten loose. That is one reason they are in the number probably, but given the depth of this song I wouldn't be surprised if there was a double meaning to them being there.

I like how you break down the lyrics. The characters really all represent people in a family dynamic. You have the strong one that shoulders all the burdens. You have the perfect one who can never mess up. You have the one that knows all the family gossip and what's going on with everyone. You have the outsider. You have the clown that's always entertaining everyone. You have the one whose mood kind of impacts everything. Told in a way kids can get.

As a big sister I actually cried when I first heard this song, being an older sibling is such a thankless job, and there's so much pressure to protect and be an example, to always be strong and shoulder everything that your parents can't when it comes to your younger siblings. We're mentors, protectors, supporters and this song just feels like one big shout out to all the older siblings who don't get the recognition they deserve. So many feels.

What I find awesome about this song is that Luisa is the MIDDLE sister...not the oldest. She has to cover for Mirabel and pull all the extra weight because she's Mira's older sister and knows Mira doesn't have her abilites. Meanwhile, the oldest sister, Isabella has a whole bevy of problems of her own trying to uphold the family image. If you do more reactions to this soundtrack, consider "The Family Madrigal" first for the background information, "We Don't Talk About Bruno!" because its a legit BOP, and then listen to Isabella's "What Else Can I Do?" to see her take on the family issues. In my opinion, "We Don't Talk About Bruno!" is legit the BEST track on the whole soundtrack. Lin did an amazing job with this movie.

@moonchild977

I think the point for Luisa is exactly because she’s the middle child. her older sister is “perfect”, and Isabella’s pressure is to uphold not only her younger sisters, but the whole family, and that’s a lot. meanwhile, Mirabel is the messy one the family worries about, meaning Luisa gets overlooked in between her sisters. there’s no attention to her problems, so she just works hard, because she cares, and they rely on her without thinking about it. poor Luisa is always running around, doing everything. all the family is under a lot, but it’s interesting that Julieta’s kids have it the worst

I think one of the last parts of the song is very relevant and goes kind of unnoticed. "Give it to you sister and never wonder if the same pressure would've pulled you under". Was someone that, in the past, felt a lot like Luisa feels in this song I think it has some dubble meaning. Like I agree with what you say but also I think she would feel guilty if people realized how difficult it is for her because she sees herself as the one that should be bearing all burdens without complain, so it would be shamefull to addimit she can't do that (even thought, in reality, it is no shame to not be able to "carry it all", sometimes it is hard to see that)

I am the youngest in my home, and my older sister, who has always been this "yes girl" for my family, this song really had me taking a step back and looking at her. How she takes care of her family and comes when my mom calls her for help. She drives out after a twelve-hour and occasionally a sixteen-hour shift to see and help my grandmother, a four-hour roundtrip, and then does the household chores. She sleeps so little, works all day, helps out the family at night, and does it all over again everyday. The line that probably hit me the most is, "Give it to your sister and never wonder if the same pressure would've pulled you under." My sister is amazing because I know that "pressure" would have crushed me a long time ago; she just never let it get anywhere near me.

She loves you very much. I did the same for my sisters. Our mom was sick from her cancer and I drove 2 hours to stay with my mom a few days every week with my newborn, trying to do virtual learning for my other child and take care of my infant and mom. One sister lived with her dad and was in highschool and the other was at college. I didn’t want them to worry, and I did my best. One of my sisters said “this song reminds me of you so much, especially the part about handling all the family burdens” and I cried because I didn’t think anyone noticed least of all her because I tried to keep that stuff from her. I love them with every fiber of my being, I feel like your sister loves you this way too

@@misscheeky8010 I think, as a younger sibling, we can be pretty oblivious to much of what our older sibling does for us early on, it's not until we're older that we really take pause and notice all that our older siblings have done for us. Im a middle child like her, got an older sister named isabella (funnily enough) who is the golden child and a little brother who is the apple of everyones eyes with me in the middle being forgotten and overlooked yet the one everyone dumps everything on. Was bullied viciously in school to the point i just broke down before my parents finally took action and moved me to a different school. So there i was mentally vulnarable, newly started at a new school when barely 2 months later my sister got hospitalized for 6 months because of a deadly illness. My dad rarely home due to working, mom always at the hospital with my sister while i had to stay home taking care of the house and my little brother. I had to be the strong one, carrying the others burdens to lessen their worries despite cracking and crumpling underneath the sheer weight of it and nobody cared to notice

So, I relate to this song in such a different way than most. 5 years ago my health spiraled, I became disabled and my mental health plummeted with it. It seems like every 6 months or so, it gets worse. I get new symptoms, comorbid disabilities. My diagnosis' just keep stacking and building. But Amanda is Always happy. Amanda doesn't let it get her down. Amanda is strong, an inspiration, and never doubts that good can come from this. Amanda always has a bright smile and can take anything. ... They don't see the world through my eyes. and they don't want to. When they ask how im holding up, i paste on that smile. they come to me when they get diagnosed with something because i understand... I don't do it for me, i do it for them. because if they knew what i go through. If they could feel the physical pain?; the sleepless nights from pain so severe i can't move and struggle to breathe; every dislocation I have bc of my disability, the days where im so depressed i can't get out of bed because is life worth living if this is the life i have. it is worth it, but its hard. and isolating. To all the siblings/kids out there who are the strong ones don't give up cuz as heavy as all the bs gets the reward at the end of the road is well worth the struggle. Much love y'all

I’m the youngest of but I relate to this quite a lot. When our mum got sick all the pressure was on me to take care of her and also to keep everyone’s spirits up. While they were breaking down I had to be the rock. Don’t cry, it’ll make them sad. Don’t show that you’re cracking, they can’t take it. As the youngest all the pressure they didn’t want to take fell onto my shoulders and when they noticed I could take it a lot better than they did it just kept getting worse. They would just assume I could take their burdens because I didn’t show how hard it was under all the combined weight. Sorry that was super depressing. We’re actually a very close family and once they noticed that I couldn’t take the weight and it was severely affecting my already bad mental health they tried to take some of the weight off of me. Helping with my hobbies that keep me centred and calm and making sure I was eating and taking care of myself. I still try to take most of the weight because in my eyes I can handle it while they couldn’t (not healthy but I’m trying). Thank you for reading this far if you did

Lin wrote this largely inspired by his older sister. She tries to this day to fix all conflicts in the family and make everyone happy and help everyone with their problems, and is, in Lin's words, "allergic to admitting that things are hard". It hits harder when you realize this is him writing from her point of view because she'll never talk about it herself.

I love the lyric “the ship doesn’t swerve as it heard how big the iceberg is”… and we all know what happened to that “unsinkable” ship. Some scrapes along the side, succumbed to the pressure of the ocean.

And notice the name on the ship - Madrigal. It symbolizes the family, who doesn´t want to deal with troubles and act like they don´t exist. You know, basically everybody has its problems (Peppa needing to be constantly happy, Isabela being perfect, etc.), but everybody is pretending everything is great. Abuela Alma even knows about the cracks in their home (and magic), but again, instead of trying to find the source of it and fix it, pretends everything is fine, nothing is happening, let´s stay on the course. Just like the ship that doesn´t move out of danger.

Love your lyrics analyzis! As always spot on! I am the oldest of four and my youngest sister died from cancer at the age of 12 (me being 24 by then), 10 years after her diagnosis. Nobody put any pressure on me, but I took on the responsibility for carrying my entire family and making sure everyone was as allright they could ever be, for many years. Ended up exhausted and depressed as a grown up mother of four. Had to learn how to say no, how to hand things over to others and trust that things will be allright even if I don't cope. Today I am fine, and life is wonderful, thank God. This song is soooo relatable to so many people out there. What a blessing from Lin Manuel Miranda and Disney!

This song when I first heard it made me cry. I'm the oldest sibling in an Asian family. The pressure that our parents put on us to be a role model for our siblings and the responsibility of it all just crushes me a little every single time. But then I see my younger siblings grow in to their own and I realize that at some point my parents will pass, and I'll have to take charge. There's a fairly big age gap between me and the second. I'm finishing up college to be a nurse right now and I'm so, so proud of my siblings. They don't have the same pressure I did growing up and I am thankful of that, just as I am envious. They got to do what they wanted(within proper reason) as long as it didn't go against their core teachings. Well, I say teachings but its more like my parents took/hand picked a bunch of things from different religions and simply combined them to make a rule book. Anyways, my siblings are my reason for living. Sometimes I'll catch myself thinking what If they didn't need me anymore? But, that's just life I guess.

When things were tense or stressful I would ignore wants and comfort and cater to everyone else. However whenever anyone tried to comfot me I would push themaway because it was my job to watch over them. I suppose you could relate to the pressure of being a parent. Love this song, it speaks volumes for those of us who had to take on a care giver/ protector role in families. She took responsibility for not only for her family but her community too, that’s why in the video we constantly see her saving her sister and gingerly fixing her glasses. The visual of seeing her house fall on her and the sisters horrified face because she never realized how much stress she was in said a lot about how little stress or pressure is talked about in families. They always just play it down by saying their fine.

This song is SO FREAKING good. And this MOVIE is so freaking good. I rock with Camilo because when our family fights (Irish/German so...yea) I'm the diffuser with comedy to try and calm everybody and break the tension. But I have another family member who takes and holds all the problems on their back. And then another who is pressured to be the poster child of perfection. God dang this movie just nails the whole family dynamic that we all go through.

This song really hit me when I first heard it. I was the oldest between my brother and I, and I felt as though I had to work twice as hard because my parents saw me as the role model, the good influence, I needed to be in AP classes, I needed to excel in music, I had to behave a certain way to meet certain standards for them. But then when I came out, and they turned it around and labeled ME as the family burden, a bad influence, I took it really hard. And my brother, who I had been extremely close to, listened to them and told me I was awful for disrespecting my family like this. I had to leave for my own health and safety, but it’s been so hard to break those habits of feeling constantly pressured to measure up. I went from the role model to the one they never talk about with people. My mental health is better overall, but I’m still hurt

I'm the oldest and this song had me crying and I even sent it to my mom because she didn't realize how much pressure she put on me as a kid. I was basically second mom to my siblings growing up and man, it was rough. There was so much stress and fear and wondering is everything going to be okay tomorrow. I was their protector and their mediator and the one they came to for advice. I did my best to never break down in front of them because for me I felt like it was my job to be the tough, strong one, strong people didn't break, they just kept going.
