Another thing that got to me is how when the doors are stacked like dominoes, she says "a light wind blows" even though we see clearly a tornado. Even on this song she keeps downplaying her problems/feelings just to help others and avoid feeling like a burden for anyone else. Because in her head She's the strong one, so no matter how bad she feels why would she need help?

EXACTLY!!!! And also *notice the tender way she fixes Mirabel's glasses* right before the Dominoes start to fall from the "light wind" blowing. That is so beautiful. *Even as a hurricane is bearing down, she's looking out for her sister. That heightens the message that Luisa can never truly REST!*

One of the things that I noticed just now was that during the bit where Luisa exits the relaxation scene- and where the rocks start piling up on here- while Maribel is there- it seems like Maribel is also trying to Help Luisa, but she doesn't know how. It looks like Maribel extends a hand out to try and help hold up the rocks that are falling on top of her sister- but as more rocks start falling, Maribel brings her hands up over her head out of fear. It may seem small, but to me it feels like one of those situations where the younger sibling wants to help out the older sibling- but they don't know how. Sometimes getting feelings of 'What if they don't want me to?' or "What if I get in their way?' They want to help, and they want to be there, but they don't know know how they can help an already struggling sibling. That was just my take from it though.
@ZariDV

Great catch! I didn't notice it myself until you pointed it out and I looked again. I think it also speaks to how Mirabel grew up feeling like she was in the way and her contributions were so invalidated that she never quite learned how to make contributions that are as heavy as what is demanded of Luisa. So in that scene Mirabel, who is helpful at heart, has no idea how to lend a hand even though she wants to. They were both raised in such different ways; one needing to carry all of literal heavy loads and the other being pushed aside and treated as if she had nothing real to contribute. It's sweet that the end of the song shows Mirabel finding a way to help through simply listening, letting Luisa feel safe enough to speak about her struggles, validating her feelings and giving her a well-deserved hug. And Luisa found a way to help Mirabel (without using her physical strength) by accepting this help and letting her know that her compassion was seen and appreciated. I loved how much you see them loving each other here.

When you broke into tears, I balled (for the nth time) as well because she is me. I'm always the one deciding, carrying, and providing for the family and pressure just keeps drippin' and we won't stop. All I ever pray for is for me to just have time for myself and not feel guilty. I know that a lot of people relate to this song regardless of whether they’re a middle child, but as a middle child like Luisa, this song was everything to me. A lot of times, it seems like the oldest child is the “golden child” (which certainly also carries its own pressure), the youngest child is sheltered, and the middle child kind of just blends into the background. So we go out of our way to be helpful to others, because that’s the only way we feel we can prove our worth. I have so many thoughts and feelings about this song, I just love Luisa so much.

i’m the middle child too and in my head i’ve often referred to myself as the peacekeeper because i’m constantly smoothing over any fights, big or small, in the family, desperately tiptoeing around them all to keep them as happy as possible so no more fights occur, and that’s been my role since i was a kid so this song ruins me lmao

I only found this song a couple days ago and I am still crying over it. As an eldest sibling myself, your siblings come to you for help and their problems as well as look up to you, and yet your parents come to you to talk about their problems sometimes too because you are the only one of the kids who would "understand" but yet, who are we supposed to go to for help? We are supposed to be the strong ones... And damn this song perfectly put all of the anxiety and constant state of worry to be the one everyone depends on and you were taught to not put yourself first.

This is exactly how I felt growing up as the oldest, as a single mom who is the sole breadwinner, and right after having my son taking care of my mom full time until she passed away. Definite thumbs up from me. You're the first reactioner I've seen that mentions throughout the entire sequence, Luisa is protecting Mirabel and constantly on the lookout for something dangerous but on the inside she's breaking and it's sad. And you can tell she's doing it out of love but even if you're doing something out of love, doing it in an excess can be emotionally overbearing. And one thing I especially like in the sequence, is that the one thing Luisa really struggled to carry was her door symbolizing her gift which is symbolic for the pressure she now has because of it. New sub from me!

Can we talk about Mirabel's absolute horror when her sister is flattened by their home? The more visual symbolism and metaphor of being crushed by the weight of their families name and duty and everything that's expected of her, and Mirabel only really truly understanding how heavy it all is in that moment where Luisa breaks for just a split second before lifting it back up again. The line "give it to your sister and never wonder if the same pressure would have pulled you under" really fucking hurt, i had already been crying at that point but that brought me to the point of ugly crying. Her family and the community putting all these things on her and not giving a second thought to how much it's hurting her because she's the "strong" one... Luisa is the character I felt the worst for by far.

I've watched at least a dozen people react to this song and you're the first who really noticed Luisa's facial expressions. I appreciate your recognition of this character. Granted, a lot of folks are noting just how hard this song hits because the feelings Luisa is giving voice to are so common, but you're picking up on a lot more of the fine detail than most have. The PLEADING in her eyes as the rocks keep falling on her is heartbreaking. She's almost asking Mirabel to save her even as she keeps interposing herself to keep Mirabel safe. And the lyric "Pretty sure I'm worthless if I can't be of service" just destroys me. The glitter donkeycorns are fantastic, though.

I hope you watch the whole movie. I’m rooting for Luisa as main character in the sequel! I think so many people love and relate to her as a character. The movie does make acknowledgment of her current situation but I find myself wondering how she came to feel this way. Just physical strength is not a reason for her to be carrying every family burden. And I want to know how her troubles really resolve. I hope her sisters help. But that verse about the ship not swerving around the iceberg, that specifically makes me think that the family has maybe not chosen more sensible options when they knew they could use Luisa’s muscle for it instead. Which would put on a lot of pressure.
@brianabales4538

She feels this way for two reasons- 1. Her grandma puts lots of pressure on everyone in the family to behave, help as much as possible and be perfect in their gifts. The second reason is that she talks about wondering what joy and relaxation feels like which gives the audience the idea that she’s never had a day or even a moment off from doing the heavy lifting in town since she got her gift around 5yrs.

The ship says 'Madrigal' on the side, that bit about the family trusting her to bulldoze their way through trouble is absolutely intended. Also, during the relaxation part the donkeys have unicorn horns symbolizing how unrealistic and fantastical she sees the possibility of just breathing.

Hi.... First of, don't ever feel bad for rewinding as much as you want... If I just wanted to watch the video and listen to the song, then I'd go to the musicvideo and watch that... Which I might do ten times a day anyway 😅 I loved your raw reaction to this song. It is by far my favourite of the music in Encanto. And I absolutely love that immedietly after this song, Mirabell (The younger sister) just gives her one big hug while telling her that she's carrying too much. I just love that hug, and you can see Luisa start to relax a little bit with her sister when one of the townspeople yells at her to remember to get the donkeys back to the fold. It was just so hearbreaking to see all her walls slam back up again. I just love her character soo much. 😍😍 If you are going to continue to react to Encanto music, then I would heavily recomend "What Else Can I Do" which deals with a whole other kind of pressure and expectation. Another one I would recomend would be "We don't talk about Bruno" which is just a very visually and musically stunning piece. And If you want some context to all this music then "The family Madrigal" which is the opening song of the story would be really good to react to. Again, I really loved this reaction from you 😁

I now have C-PTSD and Dad and I are trying to get an assistance dog set up for me. It's so hard to make people understand when it's someone so close to you. I've clung to Cinderella for years as someone who was able to stay humble and kindhearted through all the abuse (abuse that came from within her own home), but now I also have Luisa as someone I can present to people and say "this is how I felt". You're the first reactor who commented on Luisa's expressions. The moment that she hits the refrain the last time, it's so much more vulnerable than the first and her expression is resignation and a plea for help. Luisa is a superhero (I acknowledge her Superman moment carrying Lois Lane in tow) fearlessly leaping from one crisis to the next and never knowing if it's the one that will break her. Luisa is every mother holding a family together. Luisa is every father keeping a household stable in an unstable world. Luisa is everyone who suffers in silence; never acknowledged for WHO they are... just what they can do for others. ... and [spoiler] first thing that happens in the movie after the song will warm your heart.

A very relatable song from an even more relatable character! She loves her family and does everything she can to try and help the family but as things keep piling on and piling on and she’s becoming overwhelmed but she would never admit she was getting overwhelmed because to her that would feel like she’s letting the family down so she slaps on a smile as a disguise as the burdens continue to pile on leaving her with this massive PRESSURE hidden just UNDER THE SURFACE. So very relatable. The part that hit even harder for me was the part where she sings, “that’ll never stop” in that defeated voice. I recognize that moment, the moment where I’m stuck for so long in such a crappy situation with no clear end in sight that eventually I stop waiting for it to end and think it will never end and this is my new normal. Probably one of the worst feelings in the world! Fortunately the “new normal” often does end eventually, you just have to HANG ON A LITTLE LONGER and be willing to admit to the people you love when you need a little help as well.

The music and composition of the song is spectacular (Well done Lin Manuel Miranda) it pain of the experiences that everyone can at least relate to a little bit whether it be a one-time occurrence or and ongoing problem, then the animation adds with Luisa's facial expressions, and there's some comedic relief with dancing donkeys and donkeys dressed as unicorns. This is why Luisa is my favorite character of the film. I highly recommend that you watch it if you haven't already. I appreciate your reaction and the time you took to make this video. Enjoy your day!

I cried through the entire movie. I connected with so many of the characters in the way you just connected with Luisa. (And yes Luisa is one of them for me, as well) The family members all get their powers/gifts when they turn 5, so Luisa has been held to the standard of being the strong one for 14 years (She's 19) And not just by her family, but the entire community. She needs a big hug and a vacation followed by some time daily to just relax and have fun in her day to day life.

Rissa, I feel like God truly blessed me to come across your reaction video today. Thank you for your beauty and transparency. 🤗🥰 Truly, I feel like Lin-Manuel Miranda took my diary and set it to music with this song. *Surface Pressure* is very much my life's story. I'm the baby of my mom's children yet still have all the pressure on me. And no one ever seems to care about ME or the pressure I feel being the family servant/bank/slave. The part that speaks most heavily to me are the last lines, *"Give it to your sister and never wonder, if the Same Pressure would have pulled YOU under. Who am I if I don't have what it takes? No cracks. No breaks. No Mistakes! no pressure."* 😭

Another important layer to this song is really how much Luisa is begging Mirabel for help. Even as she shields her little sister from everything going wrong, she knows she can't do it all. Mirabel is trying to find out what's happening to their miracle, to the magic they have, and no one else seems to be listening. But Luisa KNOWS something is wrong. Mirabel comes to her asking questions and Luisa tries to blow her off at the beginning, but in the song we hear and see her saying something different. "I worry something will hurt us" "Can I somehow preserve this?" Most importantly, when she looks Mirabel dead in the eyes and says "Keep going", and after the song she gives Mirabel a clue. This isnt the action of someone who's going to fix it herself, instead it's the action of someone who's trusting her sister to do what she does. The impossible. Luisa is a great sister, even believing in Mirabel's abilities when no one else does.

Eldest grandchild here, this song gets to me soooooo much. Growing up with adults only paying attention/compliments when you're the useful one. The way she slips and shows just how much she's struggling then immediately afterwards all smiles trying to shrug it off. The whole song is like that person who shrugs off fear, anxiety. Etc with humor. The upbeat tempo of the song as she's confessing she's getting to a breaking point, calling a tornado a light breeze. Just.... ugh

One thing I love is that Lin-Manuel actually wrote it for his older sister (6 years older, I believe). He recalled a Christmas where their parents woke her up early to put together his He-Man playset so he'd be able to play with it when he woke up Edit: Jessica Darrow also did a jazz version of this song with just her and a bass. Also notice how gentle Luisa is when she's adjusting Mirabel's glasses They also originally had her room as a boring stone room but there was a secret door leading to an amusement park and a circus so she could be a kid

I really feel for you. When my dad got diagnosed with cancer I felt so much pressure just to keep him functioning was just so sudden. I went from a 19 year old child that had not many worries and an older sister who always took care of her to someone who got all the pressure pushed onto her. My sister went to college and me and my brother were left to take care of him. But I had to be the responsible one for once and it was really hard because it hurt having to take care of him but I was the only one who could be there for him.

When she says "I have my nerves, and it worsens, I worry something is gonna hurt us"... She's not even concerned with herself. She's worried about her family and her ability to protect them. Also: "No mistakes." As in "I can never mess up because too many people depend on me" Honestly there are too many powerful lines for me to pick them all out but I feel like every time I listen a new line stands out as a point of pain and oof. The first time I heard the full version of this song, I listened to it on repeat for about fifteen minutes and bawled my eyes out. Of my mom's kids, I'm the oldest. I was basically made to be a second parent, a live in nanny and a live in maid, on top of enduring abuse. So this song really hit me deep, especially the last chorus. I was always expected the be the one to take on everyone's problems. And I always felt like I had no one to turn to, or when I would, it would be pushed to the side. So yeah. This song was like therapy for me.

This felt like a group therapy session! Very relatable song. I’m also noticing that in this mid of all of her emotions she’s not even asking for relief. She doesn’t ask the family to less burdensome and handle things on their own. In spite of all the emotions she continues to be resilient and carry the burden. It doesn’t even sound like she’s complaining really.. she’s just expressing how she feels deep down. That’s all. Her simply expressing her emotions and not asking for return is also a beautiful, emotional lesson. PS. She even handles the donkeys… the anima that’s suppose to carry our equipment and burdens.. she carries the things that are suppose to relieve her pressure

I love the frame you paused on at 6:35 . Along with seeing how protective Luisa is, it's also very deep; her facing her door. Yeah, this song gets to me too~ As a middle sister with a pressured-to-be-responsible older sister and a longsuffering-to-a-fault mother, I can get the feels for anyone who bears Luisa's kind of stress. And the visual of her in the red lighting holding up all that weight while saying "it doesn't hurt"-- gets me every time.

Starting at 19:00 when Luisa's eyes get teary and then she fumbles a bit...i felt that. You hold everything in all the time but every now and then the mask we wear, cracks a little, but then we recover and keep pretending that everything's fine again. Also in when she sings at the beginning "if I could shake the crushing weight of expectations, could i free up some room for joy..." that hit hard too. Like if I could somehow careless and just do me, could I be happy, like truly. Great reaction, I found myself re-watching you re-watching. Love love love!

7:22 "How long has she been like this?" Well, she was 5 when she got super strength. There's no telling how long she's been feeling that pressure, but probably for many years now. The fact that her little sister didn't get any super powers probably gave her more stress, and that's all the more reason for her to have bottled it up around Mirabel because she doesn't want to put *any* of her burdens on her baby sister. In the movie there isn't really a lot of time to see what was their normal family interactions before their super powers were fading, but throughout the music number Luisa is constantly saving and shielding Mirabel. Unlike the others in the village we don't see Mirabel demanding Luisa's help, but in this video she unintentionally becomes a burden to Luisa anyway, not only as one more thing that Luisa has to carry but Luisa also puts in extra effort to not make Mirabel worried for her.

As the eldest of 3, who was neither the smartest nor most ambitious, this song resonates _hard_ with my heart. That feeling that you have to at least be the strong one, the unshakable one, the one who doesn't cry. It really is nice to see someone else truly _get_ it. The song isn't about being strong no matter what you face, it's about how it's _ok_ to be weak, and putting yourself under so much pressure, physical _or_ emotional, isn't always, if _ever,_ a good thing.

this song hit me on multiple levels... I was a middle child, having to be strong for my younger siblings and nieces and nephews.. I was suck all the time but kept pretending to be ok so people wouldn't worry about me. Learning to be independent and "mature" for my age. Then my mom, who was the eldest of her family, always taking care of her little brother and sister, she got married right out of high-school and soon had 4 boys to look after and sacrifice for.. Ended up with my dad and had me and my baby sister. I remember the day clearly when there was some extra money and mom started talking about getting things for me and my sister, and we were like "no mom, lets get something new for you, hell I've remember that shirt since I was 5, you need some new clothing" She.. cried so hard. We didn't fully understand, we just wanted our mom to look nice for once. But now older with my own kid and I know why, much as I had to be stronger than I was to keep everyone from being too worried about me, how even now its a struggle not to take on way more than I can handle for my family.. Sometimes you need someone to just say "hey, its ok. Take a break, do something for yourself" So you know, go do something for yourself, you deserve a little relaxation. No matter what's going on, nothing is more important, and your loved ones will still love you if you take a moment or two.

At first to me the dancing part near the end with the donkeys felt out of place, but then I realized that it was again Luisa shouldering the pain for her sister. She saw how terrified that Mirabel was so she changed up the situation to make it more fun and less scary, switching to dancing, still singing about the same thing but smiling and making it sound happier. All of this because she couldn't stand to see her sister terrified when she felt like she could do something about it. She does this all throughout the song too, we see Luisa scared, breaking, but the moment she sees how scared Mirabel is, she puts on a brave face, and honestly I think its the sweetest, and saddest, part of this song. Even when singing about her insecurities and pressure she is doing everything in her power to make Mirabel feel safe. Luisa cares so much about everyone, and she is carrying so much weight (emotional and physical) that even at her weakest moments she forces herself to be/look strong. I wanna give her a big hug, because I get it. This movie makes me cry every time I watch it.

The pressure Luisa experiences actually comes from the expectations others (the townsfolk, her Abuela) have of her (move churches etc) and she’s super strong so it’s ‘easier’ for her and now people just expect her to do everything bc it seems to be easier for her but she never gets a break in the movie, always doing chores and get called everywhere - also SPOILER after this song she lets out these insecurities and she turns physically weak and I think that that the whole ‘I’m pretty sure I’m worthless if I can’t be of service’ comes to the surface and like she actually feels worthless bc she can’t be of service without her strength - this song always makes me sad but the one song I can’t listen to in the movie is Dos Oruguitas so so emotional

One of the lines that gets me the most is “Give it to your sister and never wonder if the same pressure would have pulled you under” because I’ve spent years doing what I can to protect my younger siblings and hide my emotions from others….And when I would allow my parents to know how I am feeling and it didn’t go well I’d have thoughts of thinking “If they had experienced the same things I have they would not be as put together as I am.”

You are the first reactioner that cry with me. I love watching the reaction of other people on Encanto's song especially this song. But you are the first one ever who cry with me. Surface Pressure with Durrow's voice sound so.. so strong. She sounds so strong but because of that it's even more hurt. Because when she talks about pressure she sounds so, so vulnerable. And the animation of this song is just hitting as hard. And Mirabel being there just make me cry even more. Because I actually need someone like Mirabel, to be there and allow me to rant and vent my feeling on them and, just that hug. That hug at the end of the song is just. So nice. My most favourite part of this song and animation of this song, start from when Luisa sings "Keep growing, keep going" though this part the song was building up but Luisa looks 'relax' and Mirabel smile (since the begining of the song Mirabel hasn't smile at all). It's so sweet actually and then rocks fall down. Luisa looks at Mirabel like she's calling out for help. And Mirabel look at her with concern and worry and the part when rocks fall even more, Mirabel gets up trying to help but then the rocks fall down again and Mirabel got scared. It has a lot of story going on here especially if you watch Encanto and understand Mirabel's 'role' in this family. (And after listen to Waiting for Miracle too) it's just gosh. The animation makes me want to 'reassure' her. That's what Luisa did. After the house fall down on Luisa and Mirabel horrified by it. It's so well done that by the end of the song it was so light heart and Luisa smiling and dance that tiktok dance. Cheering her baby sister up for sure because I would want to cheer her up too. Reassure her that everything's alright. The last lyric says it all. And the hug after that is well deserved. Damn those girls need hugs. I stan the grandchildren of this family they are so precious 😭

I grew up and still live with an abusive parent, a parent that burdened their female children daily, and I did my best to protect my sister from them. This song (especially later) described the mental struggle too well, the habit of pushing myself to the side to protect the one I love.
