I mark my buckets on the side and on the lid in black perm marker, I dont like having a lid that may have a dark residue on it on a light glaze bucket by mistake.. Like the date mixed idea. I also will hang a test tile with the color of the glaze on the handle. I have successfully removed black marker with a "scotch" pad and cream or powder cleanser like vim or comet

If you want to get those old dates off your bucket and you're using a sharpie, rubbing alcohol takes sharpie right off of plastic with little effort.
