Dr. James Tabor gives a brief taster of his ten-part lecture series, Jesus and the Dead Sea Scrolls. What, exactly, are the Dead Sea Scrolls? Why are they important to modern Christianity? What does the community of the Dead Sea Scrolls have in common with the Jesus movement?

I just wish to add that, in addition to a fine scholar, James Tabor is also a fine human being. Thank you James for all your work and all that you share with us here on KZfaq.

Separated according to the number of the benai ha'elohim It is interesting that yhwh calls the children of Israel, that they are children (benai) of yhwh your god Then there are 70 nation's, and 70 children of Israel who descended into Egypt It is present to me that the benai ha'elohim are the children of israel

both of you seem to be missing the point if you were to do a search in the bible for "sons of god" or "children of god", they are EXCLUSIVELY humans when they are clearly identified.......there are a couple of places where they are not clearly identified, and people want to jump to claim angels, ignoring all of the cases where they are clearly identified as people as for the sons of god being an order of angels, that is humans CLAIMING that these are angels try looking into Dan McClellan......sons of elohim is easier understood in a polytheistic frame work, with the god EL, and his 70 children.....this being set aside for a moment......the term sons of god, was Adam not a son of god? According to the new testament, he was.....it is safe to say that every human being who was made by god, was a child of god......and since Eve declared that Cain was with the help of god, Cain was a son of god the benai ha'elohim, i am NOT saying is just for the children of Israel, but rather any person who gets attributed as being a child of god again, them being an order of angels, that is a HUMAN CLAIM.......there has never been any angel that identified itself as being one of the order of benai ha'elohim....that is humans, not knowing what to do with this term, and wanting to believe them to be angels they were NOT angels they were either, the sons of EL, such as Ba'al, or humans who were either directly created by god, such as Adam, or humans that were created with the assistance of god, such as Cain

"Early" version of the Tanakh first, then Septuagint. Then Massoretic version of Tanakh sometime later. There are some differences between the early and later versions of the Tanakh, but probably not as much as between the texts recept us and a modern critical edition of the NT.

@@kennethbrownsher1264 Sorry, I'm not quite sure what you mean. There are a number of places where the Septuagint differs from the Hebrew text. One of the points of contention between the faiths is that Christians abused (what Jews regard as) the incorrect renderings of the whole Septuagint to prove their points about the Messiah. Can you elaborate?

So El Elyon decided to divide the world according to the sons of El. Then Yahweh, being a son of El, was given to the Isrealites. Hmmm interesting 🤔 Maybe that is why Noah said, " Blessed be the god of Shem". As if Japheth and Ham would have their own gods

@@curlymyhero Hi again. Turns out I didn't know quite as much about the Essenes as I thought. Some scholars maintain they mostly lived in Qumran, but Josephus and others say they lived all over. Yes, I hadn't realised they persisted so long - some scholars arguing they survived even past 70AD. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Essenes#Christianity is good. I knew nothing of en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Odes_of_Solomon before. Lots of folk think they're late 1st early 2nd, but their proto-orthodoxy feels a bit more developed than that to me. Best wishes

Being a Messiah did not get you killed. One called the Egyptian had a larger following then Jesus. His group was also massacred by the Roman's. No one was allowed to challenge Rome and The Ceasars.
@DrVictorVasconcelos
@DrVictorVasconcelos 9 күн бұрын
Well, it did, because being a Messiah in the Jewish tradition necessarily meant challanging Rome. It meant being the person who'd restore the sovereignty of the kingdom of Israel, which necessarily meant removing whoever was in power.

Tabor is in denial or deluded. For example, he says Paul's are the earliest Christian writings we have, which is a lie. Eisenman found DSS writings (pre-70) that wrote about Paul being found a fake, liar, and troublemaker by the early Church when the apostles were still around. Second, Papais said the original language gospel (Hebrew gospel?) was well accepted by 40 CE, and even Jerome had read it and talked of it in the 300's to still be extant, but he promoted a altered Greek text. Do we have texts from others who said the apostles were liars and Paul was right - that predate 70 CE? These "scholars" are deluded. Onediscipletoanother orgainization
