Jet Boat Test Runs on Charlie Lake

Two turbine engine powered race boats do some testing on the lake. These boats normally race on river courses, so a nice calm lake is a piece of cake, but we're just doing a quick test of the setup before heading off to race.
Maximum speed is not the goal here, but both boats went just over 125 MPH on this day.

350 lbs, 1250 Hp, and longer service intervals between overhaul. Plus, the T58 was designed to reliably produce 1250Hp for hours, days, weeks at a time. The piston engines have been highly tuned and hot-rodded to get near that level, and are more highly stressed. Also, yes, a very large cool factor, don't you think?

Always thought that was the biggest advantage of a turbine. Its designed to produce that kind of power all the time. A completely outrageous Hemi bored stroked supercharged and maybe sneak a cup of hydrazine into the fuel will produce 10 times the power but only for 5 seconds. And the a complete rebuild in less than 90 minutes. I like to bend wrenches myself but that's a bit much. And then there's no trip to the racetrack that's complete without a pickup truck box of broken parts. Although I the Yanks should have come to us for the Turbine/Diesel setup on their LCSs. Canadian navy has been making that work for decades. Seeing a full size destroyer coming up on plane is pretty impressive. Even more so when you don't tear up the gearbox.

The engine makes no power at idle, so letting off the gas pedal causes a huge deceleration from speed. Also this design uses a free power turbine. Please see my video on power turbines.

These are helicopter engines, and the helicopter fuel control is used. The pilot selects a percentage of main rotor speed ( usually 100) that he wants, and the fuel control adjusts the power output of the gas generator to keep the power turbine ( which is mechanically connected to the gearbox driving the main rotor) within 1% of the selected speed. Helicopter fuel controls are incredible - if the boat were to jump out of the water, the PT speed would not change at all.
@AgentJayZ
@AgentJayZ 11 жыл бұрын
The minute or so of idling as the boat comes in to the trailer is plenty to stabilize the engine before shutdown. I've inspected the turbines of both these engines, and they show no signs of heat stress.
@AgentJayZ
@AgentJayZ 11 жыл бұрын
The T58 has an integral reduction gearbox on the PT, which turns the roughly 18,000 rpm into an output of about 6,000 rpm. A helicopter then feeds that into another gearbox that turns that into main and tail rotor drives at their appropriate speeds. Instead of the helicopter main gearbox, the boat has an otherwise conventional jet-drive system which can be driven by a piston engine running at 6000rpm, or by the turbine engine.

New parts are expensive for both. On the ground, the FAA doesn't care, so many owners use the parts until they wear out - something you can't do in the air. Your little turbine will be cheap because it will be shagged. It will still run, but the FAA inspector would call it garbage.

Allison/RR 250 C18 is 320 Hp. C-20 is 400Hp. They both weigh about 150lbs, and have an output shaft speed of 6000 rpm. They would fit in a large, modified Jet-ski. In Jay Leno's bike Y2K, I think the engine is a C-20...

You get the hull from Eagle Performance in Alberta. You supply the T-58 on your own Pump, jet nozzle, Casale box, seats, steering, batteries, bilge pumps, fuel pumps, oil coolers,and gages are all commercial items. Then you take about 100 hours assembling your boat. Then spend many hundreds of hours testing and sorting out the setup, making sure it works. This particular boat, no longer wearing CDN1, but number 357, is for sale.

Exactly....I was taking note of the Gear Box to the jet drive made by the same company that makes V drive gear boxes. Interesting, I was involved in water ski racing here in Australia for over ten years and for the Unlimited class to produce engines to be able to get to 1250+HP took a great deal of Money and effort. The Ski Race boats today are powered to 1500-1600 Hp with stern drives and are lucky to acheive 130MPH with rebuilds only after a few hours. Thanks for responding Mate.

Actually, they are adjustable via a control in the cockpit, and are used to adjust the attitude of the hull while under way. Sometimes they are used to lift the front in order to provide a better inlet angle at the pump inlet. Sometimes downforce, sometimes lift....

Hi Jay, thanks for taking the time to make these videos, find them very interesting. In a marine environment (such as when used as propulsion engines in a warship) does the salt in the air have any impact on the performance of a gas turbine? Specifically, would salt deposits build up in any part of the engine? If so, could these be removed with the engine in situ or would the engine need to be removed from the ship and cleaned as part of an overhaul?

Wow, just wow! I never knew there were such boats! Being a Kiwi, I'm a Jet boat fan, but I never knew there were jet turbine powered jet boats! It's insanity, of the very best kind. In my utter ignorance of the tech involved I have but one comment; the 'contact patch' for lack of better description where the impeller draws the water in looks marginal when running the boats (especially the last one) at high speed. Does this not cause some cavitation in the output? Could the boats not do with a little rearward downforce to ensure the intake has more stable contact with the water? They are literally flying across the water! Thanks for the awesome vids!
@AgentJayZ
@AgentJayZ 7 жыл бұрын
+WoodFiredWarmth Some of the boats have rear wings, and all of them use the front canards to set hull angle for best water inlet angle. NZ is a big destination for jet boat racing. Have you seen my series of 8 vids about the 2013 World Marathon on the South Island?
@WoodFiredWarmth
@WoodFiredWarmth 7 жыл бұрын
I've not seen the rear winged boats as yet, but had noticed the front canards. The boats would be able to do much speed without them, I suspect! I'll look up your vids on the 2013 World Marathon. I'm from Wellington, but had relatives in the South Island, so saw much of it. It's a great place to grow up, but I now live in the UK/Europe which has far more to offer, in all aspects. Thanks for the reply and Merry Christmas.

@AgentJayZ
@AgentJayZ 11 жыл бұрын
it's not that simple. There are no drivelines made for old helicopter engines in boats, so you do what you can. These boats use driveline hardware designed for 1000Hp V8s. So putting more than that through the system can cause things to break. Making power is not a problem... getting it to the water and turning it into speed is tricky.
@AgentJayZ
@AgentJayZ 11 жыл бұрын
Salt spray is bad, both for deposits that destroy aerodynamic blade profiles, and because it can really cause corrosion. The ships using large gas turbine engines have huge amounts of volume devoted to inlet purification. Removing dust, and mainly salt spray. Also the marine engines have extensive use of protective coatings and paints. Race boats, like racing vehicles of any kind, lead a tough life, and are very maintenance intensive... or they don't finish.

Hey jay awesome video! When you work on an engine that is going to be used for a ground/industrial installation, is there a price difference in parts? I'm asking because a friend of mine was telling me I could get a small turbo jet engine for cheep (ie, $5000) because the engine was a ground based unit, so all the liability concerns, with aviation engines does not exist.
