Jet Drum Sander Unboxing and Setup

The other day I got a new Jet 1632 drum sander. I’ve wanted this drum sander for a long time and I hope that it is a game changing tool that will greatly speed up my production.
Since this is a large tool purchase and a lot of people may have questions prior to buying one, I decided to film the unboxing and setup of the drum sander.

I hope that this video gives you some good information about the sander in case you want to buy one. I tried my best to show the features, and I even did a test by sanding an end grain cutting board.

So I’m getting a jet drum sander for early Christmas. To I have to surface router plane one side, or put it on a sled to have it sand level on both sides. I’ve never used a drum sander.

I'm pleased that you are happy with your Jet 1632 drum sander. However, your experience is quite different from mine. I bought my Jet 1632 drum sander about 2 years ago and I was very disappointed with its performance and remain so to this day.

Great video! I just got mine and used your video to set it up. Thx a mil. Question though - why not just replace the 80 grit with the 120 and use the drum vs going back to the orbital. That's what I had planned to do with mine, but now I'm wondering if it's just going to be too much work replacing it back & forth.

I replaced it with 120 which I keep in the sander. You certainly do not want to constantly change drum sander paper. It's not the easiest process. Plus, I've never seen a board that did not need sanding after the drum sander. It's a rough sanding tool that leaves marks. The most common practice is to sand the board with whatever grit you used on the drum sander. If you use 120 then start there with your orbital sander. If you use 150, start there.

How do you adjust the sander to sand evenly? When I run a board through, the right side is lower than the left. Haven’t quite figured how to adjust it. By the way, I love watching your videos, thanks for sharing your knowledge. 🙂

There's a knob on the left hand side of mine that adjusts the sander.

Do you have a trick for changing belts? Those clips are hard to open and still have the roller not turn. I called the factory and they(as in 2 people)were absolutely no help. The problem for me is getting the belt tight.

I wish you had bought the 1632 oscillator sander to compare post drum sander handheld RANDOM ORBITAL SANDER need . Do you know anyone who has used or reviewed the 1632OSC jet drum sander ? I have seen 2244 oscillator review but not 1632 oscillator review . I have small shop in Idaho and have to sand outside and our weather often makes this horrible with winds to 25 MPH and frequent not forecast brief rain that makes me hate sanding and packing everything up to run into garage . Like your channel , trust you also . Jack in Idaho

It's been 2 years now. What's your evaluation? I'm considering this vs. Supermax. I've heard a lot of problems with Supermax but a lot of good comments too. I'm leaning towards the Jet. Bill

I have this same drum sander and I cannot get rid of snipe. I called Jet customer service and they were nice but no help. Have you had issues with snipe, if so, how did you correct the issue? I have tried adjusting the infeed/outfeed rollers with no success. Thanks.

It does happen sometimes. I've had some luck by holding the piece down on the conveyer belt as it enters and exits the sander. I try to make it stay as flat as possible.

I run a piece the same thickness a few seconds prior to the piece I’m sanding. The sacrificial piece gets the snipe instead of your project. My issue is that my sander is uneven. When I run a piece through, the right side is lower than the left. Haven’t figured out to adjust that yet.

Saw this few days ago for $1299 and the price just went up last night to $1559 before tax and shipping. Greedy bastards. Prices inflate like hell in the name of covid.
