Жыл бұрын

The original Cantonese sound effects for the fight scenes sometimes had a little too much of the "psshh psshh" that was common throughout the 90s' Hong Kong action films especially in the sequence between Jet Li and Yasuaki Kurata. Because I own the Dragon Dynasty Blu-Ray, I decided to take it's Mandarin Dub, which has a much heavier bass in its sound design whilst still maintaining the overall sound style of that era, and spliced it together with the original Cantonese. That way during the dialogue, Jet Li and Yasuaki Kurata are speaking with their actual voices rather than being dubbed by Mandarin voice actors particularly good for retaining Kurata's Japanese lines. The non-dialogue segments have the Mandarin re-sound to accentuate the impact of the hits. Unfortunately the ki-yas, grunts, etc., are in Mandarin so you get a deeper voiced Kurata who often yells "Haizo!". Not to mention the Dragon Dynasty edition uses "dub-titles" which only subtitles the English dub instead of the original Cantonese which means words aren't accurately translated. Though that's more of a problem during the dialogue not shown in the video where Jet Li and Yasuaki Kurata's characters are discussing martial arts philosophy. Otherwise you get the best of both audio versions. The only other issue is that the sounds are slightly altered in each version such as the music and background noise like the rush of the wind both having a different pitch. It can be quite noticeable in this video when it goes from dialogue to non-dialogue but there was only so much I could do about it using iMovie of course. Anyways, I hope you enjoy it! And check out my websites for top 12 lists on different categories of fight scenes.

I wonder, too, if any of it was an old master imparting a lesson to a gifted student, a little "hey, slow down a bit, don't rush into a fight so blindly". The dialogue post-fight shows Kurata's character's wisdom and understanding of hand-to-hand combat, as well as his great respect for Chen Zhen and his master, it gave a lot more depth to the fight itself.

@@alfa-psi The other reason is that him and his family were vacationing in Indonesia on Boxing Day in 2004, they were there when the Tsunami struck and they all barely survived. He said that after that day he was trying to focus more on his time with family. He took on two years at a time to make movies and the rest of the info you mentioned and others was what made him start lowering his action movie days more. I believe that unlike Jackie Chan who purposely used to risk his life for stunts (respectfully appreciated as it were) Jet Li was met with the fact of dying unpredictably or his loved ones by nature itself. When one is risking one's life, I think in difference that untimely death accidentally or not does bring many thoughts on how we spend our time alive.

@helioshyperion8077 Jet Li never learned Wing Chun so definitely not. He's playing to his strengths which are changquan or "long fist" and fanziquan which is "lightning fist". The second one in particular suits Jet Li especially considering he is blindingly fast. I learned wushu myself so the number of different kicks he is pulling off is no surprise either. The sheer number of different kicks you have to learn in wushu is nuts

Don’t know if anyone notices, but there are instances in which certain parts of the frame is blurry. That’s because back in the day where they didn’t have the ability to digitally edit out wires, they would smear Vaseline on the top of the lens so that the wire couldn’t be seen, now the wires themselves were thin, but we’re metallic, so light could reflect off the surface of the wire and expose it.

It was the first "Jet Li" movie I ever watched specifically because he was in it. That part where he kicks the hay into the guy and he wigs out attacking the hell out of it has always made me laugh out loud, obviously intentional to lessen the tension and its perfect because it doesnt last long and it something youd actually do to disguise your movement.

This is by far one of my favorite all time fight scenes in any martial art movie. Just brings back all kinds of memories, I was 9 when this came out. I remember seeing this and thinking how absolutely awesome it was to watch two masters fight like it was a game of chess and be really honorable about it

In the days of vhs dubs and rips, I truly think people today are missing out on some amazing movies just because they don't have some flashing CGI burning their eyes every 5 seconds.

Such a crazy fight scene, and really creative choreography. Granted, I always hated the SLIGHTLY overcranked cam speeds in Jet Li's films. I mean 6-12% is fine--great, even. But once it starts hitting 16%, it's just too bloody much. THEY'RE ALREADY FAST. They don't need to be impossible to see or follow. 😕 That's the opposite of awesome storytelling, lol.

Jet Li and Donnie Yen came from a place of pure martial arts, it really doesn't get more authentic than those two. They're truly the best at it in my opinion, and you feel their presence whenever they are on screen.
