Interesting real world test. I agree with the idea that that it doesn’t matter to me how fast water boils. I’m more impressed by how well that it simmers and cooks over all. If I can, I avoid freeze dried food. I prefer the wind burner over the reactor.

Great video. Made me even more sure of my own choice 👍🏻 I pondered quite a bit over which stove to get, the Jetboil or the MSR Reactor. In the end, I went for the Reactor. And I’m very happy I did. I now have both the 1.7 and the 1.0 liter pot. And, depending on if I’m alone or with someone else, just boiling water, or need to melt snow, I’ll choose the appropriate size pot. I have used the Reactor in winter, in temperatures below -10 deg. C, in summer, and up in the mountains where it’s usually quite windy, and it has never let me down. The Reactor works like a charm. And, also considering the Reactor as a piece of safety equipment for keeping myself warm in a precarious situation, I don’t have a problem with the weight or the price. The Reactor is a bombproof piece of kit, and it boils water faster than anything else I’ve ever used. To me this video says it all. If I only have a small amount of gas left in the canister, would I prefer a stove that boils water as fast as possible, or would I prefer to wait several minutes more for that water to boil. In other tests I’ve seen, because of the Reactor’s efficiency, it also uses less gas than the Jetboil, which in my mind is a huge positive. So ok, it might be on the heavier and bulkier side, but it seems to out perform the Jetboil by quite a bit. I think the MSR Reactor is great, and there is a reason why a lot of mountaineers use this stove high up in the mountains. It works. All the best from Norway 🇳🇴

I totally agree with the time, but obviously fuel use is indicative of efficiency. Knocking back the fuel valve a bit takes longer but conversely uses less fuel. Ultimately it would only really come into its own on multi day trail hikes. All the best 👍😊🐶

Hi Shamus and Petra.. Right from your opening shot I know the video is going to be great. Hooked into it from the first 10 seconds... You are totally right about the boil time, gas efficiency comparisons under lab conditions but its just nice to know that you have the power (melting snow etc) when you need it. The reality for me is in winter being out in harsh conditions and we all have a few gas canisters nearly empty so its the price you pay in space, weight and costs to have something that really works when its under pressure...

So I have been looking to get a compact stove, at the moment I have the Optimus Nova which with the fuel bottle is not very compact and boils .5 Ltr of water at home in 1:13 mins however I have not tested it in windy conditions. But I think that after your test I am quite happy to get the 1 Ltr MSR Reactor.

I can only concur with Petra's closing comments....woof woof! :-) Another belter; I use the 1ltr version of the MSR and can confirm, it's absolutely flawless if all you want to do is bring water to boiling point very quickly. Possibly less useful for long-distance multi-day hikes that might include a requirement to simmer.....but then the same can be said of the rock-solid Trangia system which, you also mention Shamus (a system possibly worthy of a video in its own right??). Much enjoyed, thanks as ever.

Great review of the stoves in field conditions! By chance, did you weigh the after weight of each canister? I’m assuming the jetboil used more fuel over more time, but am not certain. Maybe something like 10 grams of fuel to boil 1/2 litre with the reactor and 15 grams of fuel for the same result with the jetboil?

Enyjoyed your video as usual Shamus😀 That MSR looks like a great piece of kit n could be my next stove. I’ve a Jetboil mini-mo which I think is brilliant but haven’t used it in conditions as windy as that and only takes around 2 minutes to boil water or one of my dehydrated meals I made. It’s also got a regulator so I can cook a nice steak when I take my girlfriend. How stable is that MSR, it looks like it could just blow over? Looks excellent though 😀👍
@outdoorsinspiration9284
@outdoorsinspiration9284 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks 😊 Firstly, I would say that unless you want to have a stove for melting snow or boiling water very fast - look away from the Reactor 👍 You can't 'cook' / simmer with it and it may only be used with the bespoke MSR pans. I don't think it is any less stable than any other stove and pan set - I know it looks it, but it isn't really. The pan doesn't lock onto the burner head in the same way as your mini-mo. At the end of the day, the video was just a bit if fun in the wind, ultimately I would always look to use a windshield with any other stove 👍🐶😊

Hi Shaun, I use a MSR Pocket Rocket deluxe paired with Optimus Terra Weekend HE which is a heat exchanger system. I can boil a mug of water in under a minute and complete with a full MSR gas bottle weighs in at 900gms complete which isn’t too bad. I know you can go lighter with Titanium pots but you loose the heat exchanger which we both know makes all the difference with better efficiency on the hill or in high winds
@outdoorsinspiration9284
@outdoorsinspiration9284 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Stuart, thank you 😊 The deluxe is a bit special, that has a pressure regulator too, doesn't it. I don't mind a little Ti mug to be honest. But (aside from the Reactor) The Primus Eta heat exchanger pot I showed in this video is the fastest thing I have on top of any stove. To be honest though, I don't mind slower systems, as long as I have the gas 😊👍🐶

i just bought msr reactor, tested it for 5 overnights, I love it and hate it, i have a question what about this inner gas pressure control thing, as i read one guys comment it works only for lowering the pressure in hot conditions so it wouldn't overheat, and it has nothing to do with cold weather, i myself struggled it to work on 1/5 gas left in cold weather, my vango stove performed better and sucked the gas till the end, this thing I'm afraid to overtighten the seal, to get this last gas, it's already biting on black bottom magnesium part, I'm thinking about refunding it, because i feel tricked about this inner presure regulator for cold weather, or is it just my bad unit ?
@outdoorsinspiration9284
@outdoorsinspiration9284 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Karl - I don’t understand the bit about over-tightening, that doesn’t increase gas flow? Regulated gas increases cold weather capability because the stove is optimised to work down to lower pressures - typically something like 15psi. That means that the jet is a larger diameter and consequently a great volume of gas for a lower pressure. However, a remote canister stove working on an inverted canister will outperform a canister top stove because canister cooling doesn’t take place - the fuel leaves as liquid and vaporisation happens at the heating tube. Butane / propane winter mix gas helps, but there is selective vapourisation - this means (with a canister top stove) that the propane burns disproportionately faster than the butane - so when the canister is more empty the mix is far less effective - basically you are left with the butane. I hope this makes sense? I don’t know why you have the problems that you have without knowing the exact details - but if you’re having to over-tighten things then that doesn’t sound right 😊🐶👍
@karlb1695
@karlb1695 3 жыл бұрын
i made a seal very very tight, and i see no superior gas sucking power in cold weather, or on low gas , it's actually struggling to keep the gas going because the radiant burner is so wide and it needs gas to be displaced on big area, on low gas it just doesn't have much pressure to do that anymore, so even low wind can blow the fire from radiant burner, and this inner pressure valve doesn't do anything beneficial for cold weather/ last gas, i think that wind burner has smaller head size, also it not the same metal in the burner, instead of sponge metal, they used lots of thin wire it seams, seal between pot and burner seems better, I'm assuming that it's better performer on low gas, please people help me to know if my unit of reactor is good, not faulty, i kinda like it, just got annoyed about low gas performance, and strugle to burn the last gas, i guess it's normal and everyone has the same issues ? i read article on outdoorgearlab, it kinda says the same thing i talk about
@karlb1695
@karlb1695 3 жыл бұрын
@@outdoorsinspiration9284 thanks for reply, I'll try to explain : sometimes on low gas you just screw your burner (vango for exmpl) very tight, so it would push on pin to the maximum, so it would release the maximum gas, on the reactor i feel like i cannot get pin as deep as on the vango, i screw it very tight , and even then i see super diminished performance, it's actually the 1/10 of gas left I'm talking about, i left the stove to boil the water in. maybe 17km/ph wind and it just blows the fire in burner, and this burner needs a lot of pressure to operate in wind, wind gets trough heat dissipation holes and blows the fire on low gas, maybe my inner presure regulator doesn't work properly, i was expecting it to suck gas like crazy till the end i can hear let's say 20 grams left, but it doesn't, it struggles burns very slowly, in porch it works , in wind on the last gas not really
