Porco Revival Episode 1
In this 1st episode of a new series I get to work on my old Giulia 1300 Ti daily driver, which has now died after many years of neglect. Over the next few weeks and months I will be putting this car back into service within a strict budget. This is the Porco Revival!

There's an old saying among us Construction Workers. The Painter's house is always in need of paint. The Roofer's house needs a new roof. The Carpenters house needs to have Carpentry maintenance. We, in the Trades, all to often tell ourselves that "it will be fine" when it comes to our own things.

I love your car. I like that there's people out there dailying old Alfas. Personally I prefer a more rugged car than a restored one, I imagine I would be afraid to drive a mint condition one daily. Also, an old mechanic once told me when I complained to him about my 75's oil leaks: if it leaks oil, it means it has oil, you should worry when it doesn't 😄

You are already doing better than I managed. Got underneath '73 1600 Super for a few hrs to replace clutch and realised I had flu... Later decided to outsource the job but didn't reposition main battery cable which draped against manifolds so as soon as engine warmed up I lost all power. Managed to rectify by torchlight and complete journey to a specialist.

The mechanics car is always the worse one in the lot. I got a job at an Alfa Dealer in Los Angles during the 70's after buying a used 66 Giulia that was a "Cream Puff"... The clutch was weak and died about a month into my ownership experience, I worked off the parts bill as a helper at the shop. When we got around to pulling the engine (with only 35k miles) the engine looked a lot like Porco. I guess LA Freeway driving is just as hard. "Alfie" lived on as my daily for another 8 years. Thanks for the memories

Wow! That car really needs a lot of work. The really good part is the lack of serious rust. My first 1972 Giulia Super 1600 was stolen while I was skiing in the Italian alps, so it didn't have time to rust away, but the 1973 that replaced it (both purchased new from dealers) only lasted 5 years until it was completely rusted away on the salted roads of Germany. I loved those cars. They were perfect driver's cars and I drove them accordingly. Like your "Roter Schwein" they were red, but had black interior. I hope to see your car back in shape and on the road again. Thanks for another excellent video!

Nope, I have to decidedly contradict: That engine does not look terrible. Yes, it does have some issues as You would expect in a sixty year old daily beater of Italian descent. The oil though is just the selfprotecting grime cover these elder machines did develop and accumulate over daily beating - be it DS, CX, the 105 series Alfas, Lancias or the Peugeots Volvos, Saabs and Matras I had owned .... all had that, and in my brine-corner of the globe they made sure this way their nuts'n bolts did loose up and open, at all, when needed. Otherwise: Looking forward to the series! Thank You for sharing.

BTW, after grazing the sump on a log I realized how little clearance there is down there and immediately invested in a guard. The money and work to install it was nothing compared to the instant loss of oil, destroyed sump and possibly damage to the oil pump and the block itself at the sump mounting holes. My Giulietta Spider also had one as the previous owner ran over a traffic island and completely took off the sump.

It has been a while! Good luck with your latest project. Porsche overcame the 356 clutch overstroking problem by limiting the clutch pedal travel with a bracket in the floorboard. “a” models had a spring type cover plate and “b” onwards had a diaphragm type cover plate. They used identical pedals but added the travel limit bracket with the diaphragm part. So maybe thats an idea for your car?
