I went to visit the Terracotta Warriors in Xi'An, China
It was an incredible day learning more about China and its history.
The Terracotta Army is a famous tourist attractions in China, yet it was forgotten until 2 farmers discovered it in 1974.
It was built in 210-209 BCE to accompany the first emperor of China, Qhin Shi Huang in the afterlife. This sight is truly spectacular, and should be on everyone's bucket list.
We travelled 4 times already, with the China 144-hr visa free transit.

Another reason why archaeologists did not dig the imperial tomb is that they believe that the current technology is not enough to protect all unearthed cultural relics from the influence of the imperial tomb. Like the Terra Cotta Warriors, they were all colored when they were unearthed, but because of the oxidation of pigments, they soon became the current color. This is a regrettable thing. And another fun fact is the Terra Cotta Warriors excavated now are only a small part. Archaeologists estimate that it may take 700 years to complete the excavation and restoration of the entire Terra Cotta Warriors

One technical comment: With the technology of the Qin dynasty thousands of years ago. Some of the warriors were colorful before they had been discovered. After the oxygen came into the ceramics skin, it appeared to grey color. You can imagine the high technology of the colorful ceramics in China 2000 years ago! They are amazing and fantastic ! 🎉🎉🎉 Maybe this is the amazing China which can tell us! Enjoy your journey in China! Hope you can explore more fantastic cultures of China! 🎉🎉🎉

Qin Shi Huang was not the first emperor in Chinese history, but the first emperor to achieve great unification. Just like how many countries in Europe were fighting against each other, and then a person emerged who defeated all countries and unified the entire European region into one country. Since then, emperors have all set this goal, which is why no one in the Chinese nation wants to split up and become independent. They all maintain the idea of world unity, and the dynasty after Qin is Han - a super empire that is even stronger than Qin, Perhaps it was the most powerful human civilization in the world at that time, and in the later period of the Han Dynasty, many people appeared in various places who wanted to replace the Han Dynasty and establish their own new empire. Among them, three forces were the most powerful, which is the famous Three Kingdoms period in history. Figures such as Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, Zhao Yun, and Lv Bu came from this period.

One theory is that the emperor asked the families of the fallen soldiers to build the statues for him to accompany him in the afterlife, because they found names on the pedestals of the warriors and they are all different with no repeat (so it's unlikely to be the ones of the sculptors). Also the hair, face and clothes are made with such details, so the archeologists believed that they were made by people who really cared about them.
@George123-bv7xq

I am not sure that the emperor "asked" but it is more likely an Imperial decree made. Qin Shih-huang was not recorded as a polite and humble man who asked for things to be done for him.

@@George123-bv7xqYeah it's definitely possible but there's quite a lot of leaders/generals in Chinese history who can be cruel in nature but were really nice to the soldiers they fought with and who died for them, that's how they demand so much respect in the military. However, nobody can know for sure because it's been over 2000 years.
@George123-bv7xq
@George123-bv7xq 4 ай бұрын
@@skevx0 True - it's been over 2,000 years but historical records have indicated that the emperor was pretty much of a tyrant who faced several assassinations attempts on his life - which was one of the reasons his empire fell apart very soon after his death. In fact, as history has recorded, when he died during one of his trips to survey the country, his death was hidden from being known. Piled up fishes were used to mask the smell of his corpse in the carriage on the long road journey back to the palace in Xi'an as no one dared be revealed that the emperor was dead for fear of a rebellion. No, he wasn't a very "nice" guy but he did get a lot of things done in unifying the country, standardizing weights and measures and writing, standardized the currency, established a code of law, building the Great Wall (a part of it anyway) and established the meritocratic system of administration of government, advancement in engineering and weapon technology and more - all within a relatively short period of time. On the other end of the scale, he DID appear to have looked after his soldiers and their families by way of making sure they are paid, well fed and well-armed, and disciplined with the most modern and best made weapons to date. That's what happens when you have authoritarians and dictators in charge - they do tend to get things accomplished on a grand scale. However, I still doubt that he "asked" the soldiers "nicely" somehow.

@@George123-bv7xq Documents from that time were found in the tomb of a low level official of Qin Dynasty(The Chinese burial objects are usually the tomb owner’s favorite things during his lifetime) were only his work records, such as case analyses, laws, reward and punishment systems, etc., even include prohibiting hunting during the breeding season of animals. Nothing show Qin Shihuang was a tyrant. On the contrary, the Qin Dynasty was a very orderly society ruled by law. I believe more in the 20-year work note of Qin officials who loved his job than history written by the people who overthrew the Qin Dynasty.

Steve when you & Ken dressed up for Lunar New Year in traditional costumes your costume was an Imperial Guard....but Ken was....giggle giggle...a Eunuch! An interesting fact on the Terracotta Warriors is that no two faces are the same. You might have noticed holes on the sides of the horses, this is to allow steam to escape during kiln drying, if they did not have holes the statues would have exploded.

No, they know the toxicity and also know that it has a function of preventing corpses from rotting. The mercury in the pill you mentioned is just an impurity carried in various minerals, which is accidentally ingested. People who consume the pill may not even know that it contains mercury, which is also the reason why toxicity only appears for a long time. If they really don't understand toxicity, why supplement with trace amounts of mercury in pills? Mercury can be consumed as drinking water directly.

The army of Emperor Qin Shi Huang was replicated based on the actual army, including the arrangement of burial positions. At that time, this army could defeat the armies of all other countries around the world. Each weapon used by this army has a few millimeters of error, and each part has the names of craftsmen, supervisors, and purchasers. If any defective weapons are found, they will be held accountable from top to bottom, including the name of Prime Minister Lv Buwei at the time.At the same time, there is no more advanced technology available worldwide.

In ancient texts, it is recorded that inside the tomb of the first emperor, he has rock formation carved out according to mountains and hill of his empire, with river and lakes also carved accordingly and fill with mercury, in the ceiling of his tomb there are gemstone embedded according to the constellation in the sky, and it is written that his tomb are guarded by legends of real size stone warriors. Over time, these stories were dismissed as myth, until one day a farmer working in his field unearthed the first terracotta warrior, his tomb is near by, they know where it is, survey detects high concentration of mercury in the area, but they are afraid that excavation will damage the priceless artifacts. even the excavation of terracotta warriors have been slowed, they are in fact very colorful when they are first dug out, but the paint chips away as soon as it is exposed to oxygen and falls off.

When walking through the street afterwards, did you manage to see the Warrior with a Space Suit on, he was guarding a shop? 😅 Thanks for sharing, cheers from Australia.

The scary part of Emperor Qin's tomb is that: 1. it's never been excavated or even broken into, so high possibility to discover some very well-preserved relics (by well-preserved I mean we can possibly see the flesh of the emperor still intact just like Xin Zhui in Mawangdui: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xin_Zhui#:~:text=Xin%20Zhui%27s%20body%20was%20remarkably,being%20found%20in%20her%20veins. ) 2. there is a recorded high concentration level of mercury vapor above the tomb, which strengthen the claim of a pool of mercury inside the tomb. 3. the place is extremely huge! The entire core of the mausoleum is roughly 55 times the size of everything you see in this video. The Terracotta Army archeological size is tiny compared to it. It's like a palace underground.

Did you go to Li Shan Garden after visiting these main halls? That is where the empire was buried and more relics were discovered there. There are 2 or 3 more new halls over there and they moved a lot of precious and famous relics to those new halls to attract tourists and it is free (should be included in the fee you paid)! You can take the official shuttle bus at the car park near the main entrance and spend another few hours exploring more fascinating history. For those who is going to visit the warriors, highly recommend it, don't miss out!

As a 3rd generation Chinese living in Malaysia, I received a full systematic Chinese education, one thing about this is Qin Shi Huang is never forgotten by us, he is deemed as 千古一帝, meaning The Greatest Emperor of All, even after thousands of years passed, we as Chinese are so much grateful and admire his accomplishment on uniting the Warring States into one China, which establish the very fundamental country til today.

Nice video. We visited this past November during the week in the off season and there was still a good crowd. I can't imagine what this place was like during peak times! We explored other areas of Xi'an and did a side trip to Baoji where my friend's aunt lives. This was a very good video and is very similar to my experience and video. Xie Xie!

Facts : The terracotta army was built to be placed inside the tomb of the first emperor of China who built the great wall in China ,his tomb was huge and was never completely opened or discovered. From the history book of China thousands of years ago,it stated that his tomb was designed in such a way that there were traps there: sharp arrows will shoot if anyone dared to approach the tomb,poison material like mercury abounds,the scientist nowadays used scientific method to check on the soil surrounding the tomb,did confirm that the mercury level is abnormally high!

There is actually a very interesting place in Xi'an, called "化觉寺", not far from the "大学习巷" you visited the first day arrived in Xi'an. It is actually a Mosque, but the kind of Mosque only can be found in China, and yes, very beautiful. At least I found it very interesting, so did my Egyptian neighbor.

It's such a pity that you missed the other part of the museum: Emperor Qinshihuang's Mausoleum Site Museum, where you can see the Qin bronze chariot which is the discovered in the Maysoleum nearby. The tickets you bought are the combination for both two museums. There's free bus for transportation or you can walk by, not too far away.
