Comparison of Russian MC 21 vs Chinese C919 aircraft
The Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 series have dominated the single aisle market for the past four decades. However, two more aircraft, the Irkut M2 21 from Russia and the COMAC C919 from China, have entered the competition. Both are nearing the end of the fitness certificate process for commercial use. It has already received approval from each own Aviation Authority, and it will shortly begin testing for worldwide Aviation agency approval.

The main features of the MC21 are the carbon fender and a wider cockpit that allows 2 people to stand in the aisle at the same time. and this is the speed of loading, unloading the aircraft and servicing passengers. Strange that you forgot to mention this. Well, the Russian plane has own engine.

No, wide aisle is designed for passengers flying without seats. It is common for Russia to overload plane and take standing passengers

Russian fuselage and wings have state of the art composite materials in their construction making overall aerodynamics much better than all other competitors. The MC 21 will also use much less fuel than any of the other competitors including Boeing, Airbus and Comac.

With such a huge price difference I think Airbus should be worried. As for the 737, I will never buy an airline ticket for a 737 flight, many people will say that is stupid but the two accidents and the cause of them makes me paranoid about Boeing especially because some experts have said that the 737 is structurally not airworthy and depends on sensors to control and make it fly.

I would say Russia MC21 hold an edge better maybe a mile long with the wider cabin. China play it safe by sticking to A320 specifications. While it will be financially sound as most China airlines won't need to buy extra handling equipment for another type of aircraft. Both A320 and C919 can use the same handling equipments and thus reduce cost. The MC21 will need a different handling equipment however the MC21 has the potential to grow longer and travel further like the A321XLR. With a wider cabin the passenger won't feel claustrophobic!.

@A N You don't get what I meant. I mean the handling equipment tailor made for A320 that also fit the C919. Certain tools to check the A321 can also be used for C919. The MC21 have different handling equipment and also the size is different and height is different.

@vMuCbEv it's totally new. Wings of MS-21 are made of carbon, not a single Russian aircraft had that before. Also new control systems, hydraulics, etc...

the mc21 is specially designed for fitting russian and other post soviet domestic market with typical longer ranges and more passengers on board(thats why most of the russian airlines using the top version of any plane.) also th3 tools and equpment for mc21 is unified with the previous soviet domestic planes like tu134 and tu204. so the planes are close but fitted for different countries

I don't think either plane will overtake the aviation industry. I do hope both are successful and provide decades of service. I know that I will be very glad to see more variety beyond the seemingly endless parade of A320 and 737 family planes that currently dominate most airports.

@@gabedaxe477 Judging by economic situation, nope. Airbus will only raise prices. They lost Russian market and will continue losing Asian. Less planes produced, higher the price. Boeing, well, we all saw what happend when US decided to change Chinese steel - engines failure. Also lack of investmens in real sector and infrastructure in US have a significant negative effect on all industry. Right now financial crisis in US will defenitely not be good for aviation industry. All said above is the reason Russia and China are making their own planes.

both these two planes cannot challenge the monopoly of boeing and airbus, unless Russia and or China develop 350 seats capacity, that are fuel and maintenance efficiency as well as cost and safety. imo, if Russia have invited China to invest in the MD 21 plane project or the company, it would have break the monopoly of boeing and airbus, at least 5 years ago. in addition both countries jointly develop wide wing span and extended length, twin aisle aircraft; 500 seats, 700 seats, 1000 seats... civilian aircraft.

Both aircraft have a huge future. Russian MC21 because of the santions from the west, so it has no choice but to use its own aircraft. Perfect for the russian company building it ! Chinas C919 because of a similar situation where chinese companies are reluctant to use foreign technology now with all the USA sanctions on tech. Plus the chinese market is the largest in the world and growing ! Sanctions from the west are actually helping russia and china develop their own industries without competition.

Neither the USA, nor any European state, neither India nor the Philippines, not even China... Only terrorist states will buy Russian aircraft, provided they can be mass-produced at all. It's over and over for the rest of Russia. C919 is outdated.

Chinese companies are reluctant to using Chinese technology because they don't want their planes to crash- that's why the C919 has tons of imported tech. The MC21 on the other hand is totally doomed. The Russian Widebody IL96 still requires three people to pilot, thats how outdated and malfunction prone it is. Having a government-run company produce aircraft basically makes you totally uncompetitive and unable to produce products that people want. All the budget gets squandered and the employees are lazy.

You have no ideas how many crucial parts these two aircrafts have to buy from western companies: Engine, avionics, landing system, electronic system, air conditioned system even the tires Michelin makes for them.

@@vladivanov9082 You missed the point here. I didn't say Russia is unable to produce the parts. Russia has to buy western parts so that Russian passenger planes will pass EU and US safety standard requirements and their planes are allowed to fly to those countries.

BRICS will be the biggest market in 10 years. MC21 is best regional aircraft with fuel efficiency and modern engines that are 20%more fuel efficient. India needs 400 of this aircraft for services to sectors like North East, South Indian regional connectivity.

MC 21 is dead born. It is like getting milk without a cow. Useless and very expensive activity. It will finish with wasted billions of budget money and a product without service. 100 will be built and 70% will be grounded, part of them will be used as donors for other planes. Just like with SSJ100

Russia has only been able to sell aircraft within Russia and China has only managed to sell aircraft to Chinese airlines, leasing companies, and Indonesia.

Another big aviation market is India and is picking up, since Russia has good relationship with India , they should try selling the MC-21 to Indian airliners. MC-21 and C-919 will break the monopoly of Boeing and Airbus. We need healthy competition and innovation in the civil aviation industry.

MC21-300 is going to be best in single isle market globally, excluding anti competitive sanctions. C919 will be primarily for domestic market but the MC21-200 (C919 competitor) recieving the 300's upgrades can re-enter the global market as a MAX-8 competitor, I'm also hoping that someone at UAC has enough between their ears to implement one flight deck across their fleet, that being Irkut-300 and the SuperJet 100 with rear mounted engine's (PD-8👍👍) is re-born and taking on the A220-100. Inexpensive upgrades + better sales staff = UAC success.

How? It's less efficient than planes already out, flies shorter distances, needs crew retraining, is probably less reliable than the A320neo anyways and probably less comfortable as well.

I believe they now have one MC-21 in trials with domestic PD-14 engines instead of the previously imported Rolls-Royce engines. Another example of how the sanctions strengthen Russia.

@@statinskill Yesterday I read an article that UAC is considering a version of the PD-14 for the TU-214 instead of the 90S but that's unconfirmed. The MC21-310 is brilliantly designed and the flight deck is leagues ahead of Airbus and beleaguered Boeing.

If the C919 is fully cleared soon for flights in China, I don’t see why it doesn’t take a lot of that market in the next 10 years. Quite a challenge to Boing and Airbus, as China is their largest growth market. Then China can clear it for sales in many of the Belt and Road countries, so over 10 years, we could see China make a lot of sales globally. The Chinese will be relentless on making it so, after all the sanctioning by the US. And it will have its own engines in time as well, just wait and see. The US and the UK have made a bad mistake alienating China and Russia, as the two countries, with huge industrial capacity in China and access to a phenomenal amount of resources in Russia,will join at the hip and dictate their own terms in the world (as they increasingly are starting to do even now). We in Canada should be like New Zealand and treat both countries neutrally. Hating China is digging one's own grave, and thankfully we have not followed the US down that path to nearly the same extent.

@426firefly That's very true especially with the previous Scott Morrison government. At least with the current government they are not as hawkish. Thank God🙏🏾. I can't tell say how many Australians believed them but it was constantly in the news. Lately that type of talk has gone down within govt ranks. But US with its plans of having their nuclear bombs in Australia will not go down well with our neighbours. Peace and ❤️

Cause of the accident is not B737 airplane, but suicide of the Chinese co-pilot, or more broadly, poor management of Chinese airline. There is no justice or safety consciousness in Chinese society. Barbaric!

And when does the Russian MS-21 come out? It is a much better passenger plane than the Chinese MC-919, it has the most modern engines in the world and the PD7, PD14, PD18, PD35 are entirely built in Russia. The MS-21 should be flying around the world by now, especially considering the crass anti-Russian sanctions. Russia is going to show the world that it doesn't need yankees worms or Eurodogs.

It was supposed to be in production back in 2012. There's only 2 test models built right now. They were using American Pratt and Whitney engines, but sanctions blocked imports of the engines so they have to use PD-14 instead. 80% of the parts in the MS-21 are imported so they'll have to find other suppliers or manufacturer the parts themselves. By the time it might go into production, maybe 4 or 5 years, it will be 15+ year old outdated technology and design.

It is very good to know that Russia and China have developed their own civil aviation planes ....and thus help or support self sufficiency ..... Though these are far behind the current models of Airbus and Boeing, they are indigenous to those countries and cost effective... More importantly , these air craft will help them to circumvent sanctions by US and West ... If these are proven in service for a few years , they may start getting international customers ...

"Domestic market" alone would be sufficient market. In fact, neither MC21 nor C919 may be able to fully meet the domestic demands during the immediate future. They may still need to buy some Boeing and Airbus. Only question is how many and for how long?

If that's the case, COMAC can buy the same PD-14 engines from Russia. It'll take time to integrate the engines and re-certify the aircraft, but it's doable

Russia can’t even get microprocessors to power their weapons. Do you think they can build state-of-the-art aircrafts without materials and software from the west? And which major airline will want to circumvent sanctions and invest hundreds of millions in these aircraft when so many things about Russia are unpredictable and unreliable for the foreseeable future?

It is still doubtful that the Total Cost of Ownership of MC21 or C919 will be better than Airbus and Boeing. But C919 will definitely have a better chance as China has a much larger market and airliners are willing to operate domestic planes as long as the safety is ok.

Sanctions have guaranteed an order of at least 500 items for the domestic market and opened the way for the 70-million people market of Iran as well as possibilities in Turkey, India, Argentina and ASEAN. So far mass production is again delayed to 2024, but by that time finally the plane is going to be 97% domestic production, and 30-40 units will be produced yearly, gradually rising to 70. Which means that in 15 years we're going to see 1000 of these flying. And regarding the original comment, extra 11 cm in width never hurt - the boarding/leaving time in airports is estimated to decrease by 20%. Check out the mockup of 2-class salon design of MC-21 at the Dubai Airshow 2021.

MC 21 would appear to be the best for operating income .Both the Russian and Chinese planes were developed back in the day when there was cooperation between countries and they both have a lot of western components that made sense back in the day . They will need to develop their own home grown engines and avionics as they can no longer depend on the west to cut them off from supplies making the planes useless Eventually in time they will both be independent of the west and perhaps China and Russia can work together to make that happen sooner .

Both are safe products, or else airline companies the world over would not be lining up to buy more than a thousand C919s. That confidence is premised on Chinese successes in her space exploits -- having chalked up an almost 100% success rate in its orbital space station and lunar and Martian landings. As for the MC 21, The West is naturally prejudiced against Russian products. In terms of cost-value comparisons, C919 wins hands down as it is 30% cheaper than the A320, which by the way is fitted with the same LEAP engine. As for Boeing airplanes, unless the company can fundamentally change the world's perception of its dishonesty and fraudulent practices before and after the two 737 Max 8 disasters, it has no future because competition in the global market is based on total trust in the safety of your products. FYI, even American airlines themselves have placed orders for the C919.

I sure that MC-21 would be serving only Russian market for some time. Where as C919 hold an edge better due to commonality with A-320 ground handling equipment as the A-320 specifications are same. Chines on C-919 may use already available ground handling with out additional investment. The MC-21 will need a different handling equipment however the MC-21 has the potential to grow longer and travel further like the A321XLR. With a wider cabin

If the MS-21 has good noise insulation and comfort, it will be the best on the market because it has the widest body. This is very important to me as a passenger. But for this, I would like to see how the MS-21 flies for at least one year to make sure it is safe and free from defects. Today I choose the A320, but after a year of operating the MC-21 I may change my mind.

6:40 the MC21 western engines are PW1000g but not the ones for the A220 which are too low in thrust, ~20klb. MC21 specific engines are larger diameter and ~30klb.

No foreign countries will buy the MC21 or the C919 due to supply chain issues that much of their parts relies on western sourcing. That leaves them with just a domestic market. With a limited market, they per plane cost will be high which will make them uncompetitive against well established planes.

The Russian plane seemed like it would have been a threat to existing competitors. But because of sanctions it won’t reach its full potential. Only likelihood of it gaining market share outside Russia is by selling to countries like India, which won’t buy Chinese jets.

The Russians have been building aircrafts for ages. Chinese have just graduated from scree driver technology to making stuffed toys snd replicas of global monuments to be sold in souvenir shops! The military aircraft do very well, while on the runway.
