It was nearly a disaster and led to the separation of the Car and Aero Engines parts of the Company with RR Cars going to BMW and Bentley going to VW. RR are also Nuclear Reactor Manufacturers for UK Submarines and have a significant presence in Marine Propulsion. Nice to review their military jet engines where P&W and GE Dominate through the massive scale of US Military Aircraft. The USMC is as big as many European Armies and has a significant airforce.

What is listed here is the set of Engine designers, who do manufacturing too. Many more manufacturers are there around the world, who do their job after receiving design drawings - so as to make them under license. A significant omission here, is the information on Russian Engine designers & manufacturers.

I worked on the assembly floor at P&WA for 1 1/2 years in the late 1970s. It was a good job but not for me. I was an avionics technician in the military and went to work in electronics and communications and probably flew on jets that had engines I helped assemble. I worked mainly assembling JT-8s, but did some work on the JT-9 including a tear down after test. I moved to Alaska after I left there and I remember many of the engines went to airlines there as this was in the build paper work. Different airlines put different accessories on the engine.

Interesting that about the rivers. What other river name have they used besides Trent? I do know that the river Trent flows through Derbyshire south of the city of Derby. Maybe that is why, given that Derby is the home of Rolls-Royce. If I was going to choose another English river as a name, I would not choose the river Thames, just because most foreigners would pronounce it wrongly. They would not realise that the ‘H’ was not pronounced and that that would be annoying.

I do know what you mean, It can be complicated. I can never remember them all. Some new aircraft come with an engine and there is no choice, other aircraft, you have a choice of engine manufacturer. I just remember bits of things like the later versions of the 757 were Rolls-Royce equipped, but the earlier versions of it used something else. PW I think. I do know that the Boeing 747 was originally launched with the seriously flawed PW engines, but later there were other engine options.

Rolls Royce is just a name. Mitsubishi, Kawasaki, Sumitomo, Volvo Aero are more responsible for this success. Exactly what is the difference between a turbo fan and a turbo prop??? The high by-pass turbo fan nowadays are basically a glorified turbo prop. The prop been renamed a fan and are partially hidden in a shroud to pull the wool over the ignorant public's eyes. Yes there are some gains in efficiencies, at the cost of more structural weights and complexities and contra rotating props do have a reputation of being noisy. The other thing the public do not seems to know is , we are still struggling with the "sound barrier" for that last 3/4 century. A "jet" that is a speed record holder just beat the next runner up by maybe 3 kts. The time had gone ways into fixing some handling problems at the coffin's corner and economy, but turbines are still at a disadvantage in fuel consumption , compare with pistons. For really long distances, such as crossing the Pacific, big airlines still have the edge over the smaller jets. For trips like NY to HKG or even Sydney non stop, I feel much more comfortable in a 787 than a Challenger, especially going there against the prevailing wind.

With P&W and Rolls Royce having significant issues with some of their products, it's hard for me to choose a favorite. In theory the best product should be the one that fits the customer the best, and has the lowest fuel burn and is the quietest. That being said, a product that is all that, but has issues, and prevents airplanes from being delivered or grounded as a result, can't be good. The quality of the overall product "jet engine" needs to become better, we've seen way too many issues over the last few years, in my opinion.

When I fly, I prefer not to sit within 45 degrees of an engine. It really ruin your day if you have a turbine blade ending up on your lap, after it went through the back of your seat. For the rear of the engines, the wing give another layer of protection.

I love simple flying videos. It is rare that I criticise, but the choice of background music which actually is not background music, because it’s competing against the voice level of the narrator is shockingly bad. The choice of music is just naff, like the cheesiest elevator music ever, but cranked up to 11 when the narrator voice level is 7. Seriously, the last 2/3 minutes or so of this, I had difficulty concentrating on what the narrator was saying. It completely ruined the end of the video for me. If it is the producers’ son who got a new keyboard for his birthday in October and he’s desperate to show his talents, I’m sorry, but this is not good enough. I could do better background music for this video myself. And I’m not even a trained musician. Narrator content first class Background music content woeful Background music level must do much better

General Electric and Rolls Royce are just names that sound nice, but someone else is responsible for that success. Your partners will tell you about that. But it should be emphasized that partners account for 80% of the success with which you like to brag that it is exclusively yours, Americans and British.
