I actually loved this movie as a little kid. Maybe because I was too drawn in by graphics and music than the actual story plot.

Not only that it was Mel Blanc and George O Hanlon's final film, but Daws Butler who originally voiced Elroy, died a year before the film began production. Plus Tiffany replaced Janet Waldo as Judy. Penny Singleton who voiced Jane was the only original cast member to be involved in the film, to live to see it's debut.

Speaking of the cast, Daws Butler, who was Elroy's original voice actor, actually passed away before the film began production.

The most interesting thing about this movie is the voice cast behind it. The voice cast was kind of cursed. The voice of Elroy died before recording, the voice of George and Mr Spacely died while recording, the voice of Judy recorded her lines but then was replaced by pop star Tiffany at the last minute.

I remember seeing this in the theater when I was a kid. The animation was great for an American 80's cartoon, and especially the 3D was state of the art at the time.

This is pretty much everything dated from 1989 and also replacing the voice of Judy at the last minute by a then-already irrelevant pop singer Tiffany (she didn't have any #1 hits after 1988) has to be one of the worst decisions in animation history. You also forgot to mention the voice actor of Elroy Daws Butler died the year before production in 1988 so they used Patric Zimmerman instead.
@WayneZalinksy
@WayneZalinksy 3 жыл бұрын
Relevant or not, Tiffany’s vocals were perfect for an 80/early 90’s re-vamping of the jetsons, it made judy less dated and more relatable to kids of that era. But the best part about this movie is it’s soundtrack, and that’s why Tiffany’s vocals worked well for this movie. The few songs she did for the film really stand out as the most memorable part for me.

Listening to Elroy’s voice in the film, I would’ve thought it was the late Joe Alaskey considering his voice sounds similar to the one he used for Tweety or Jeff Bergman.

The reason why he didn't put the film on his list of the worst animated films based on a cartoon was because one of rules for that list was that the film had to be live-action. Also, the fact that this film is animated and done by the same creators of the series itself kind of makes it the exception to the rule of that list's honorable mention.

To be honest, this movie is a serious guilty pleasure. Sure it lacks the charm of the original show. I remember seeing it on the big screen and I remember liking it and I still do for it's nostalgia factor and the soundtrack is kind of decent. It's a bad movie yes, yet I still find myself watching it and somehow still finding the soundtrack enjoyable.

I agree with you on the guilty pleasure aspect, I liked to watch it too as a kid. But when I read about Janet Waldo being replaced by Tiffany, I was like "Yeah, that was pretty callous on Hanna Barbera's part" As for George O' Hanlon and Mel Blanc...I have to give them some slack on the way they played Jetson and Spacely...It's probably safe to say that they were pretty ill at the time they were recording the lines..I can't blame them for "not being up to it"
@Missourifangirl7789
@Missourifangirl7789 6 жыл бұрын
Hanako Fairhall, it was Universal Studios that wanted to replace Janet Waldo with Tiffany because they thought that Tiffany would bring in more money. Hanna-Barbera didn't like that Janet was being replace but they had no choice. Joe Barbera would later apologize to Janet for what happened to her.

Oh...Oops...I stand thoroughly corrected...thanks for setting the record straight for me, although when I was referring to Hanna Barbera, I was referring to the company, not Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera (I doubt they'd ever allow a thing like that to happen)

By the way, AniMat. I think the music featured in this film is dated even by it's own time, because whenever you make a movie with current music in it, unless you get that movie released within a year or so, the music could already be out of style. And the songs here sound way too early to mid-80s rather than something from 1990. Although maybe I'm just not up to snuff on my music style knowledge. But I don't remember hearing anything like "Stayin' Together" by the time it was 1992.

You know, as kids we were kinda accustomed to having environmental messages be in our films in the 90s. Between Captain Planet, Ferngully and many others, it always felt important that the characters were in the mess they were in because they didn't take care of the world. And as kids, that message made sense to us. Nowadays we look back on environmental messages and cringe but honestly, I wish people had listened more. I sometimes feel like we've made the same mistakes those characters made and now _we_ are the ones in a mess because _we_ didn't take care of the world. When did that message stop making sense, I wonder?

IMO I think you were a little harsh on this movie. True, it's no Secret of Nimh or American Tail. It does have it's flaws. However, for the time it was released, I, as a kid, found it enjoyable AND memorable! One thing you failed to mention was the soundtrack. It's pure 80's cheese! The songs were meant to reflect kids' musical tastes AT THE TIME OF RELEASE which was Late 80's/Early 90's. Saying NOBODY should see this movie is overdoing it. It's like Storks or Trolls. Just a nice bit of 80's fluff to snack on, not ruminate over.

My memory is a bit fuzzy, but I remember the movie "Rockin With Judy Jetson" that came out 2 years before this movie, and pretty much did it right. 1. With the Judy movie being a musical, the songs fit the context of the story. 2. Judy's more noble qualities like her love for singing and creativity are given proper focus, with her self centered behavior virtually non-existent. 3. Sky Rocker as the romantic love interest works due to how they properly establish his character as someone who just wants to be himself in his expression. 4. There is a bit of an environmental message, but it ties well with the core musical message, and it's not beat over the head. 5. The villain for the Judy movie is a music hating witch, who was created specifically for the movie, instead of Spacely. The Judy movie makes Spacely more along his "jerk with a heart of gold" personality. 6. Judy's singing is done by BJ Ward, but Janet Waldo still voices the character proper. 7. The period piece elements are still there, but are more downplayed.

This film is a mixed bag, but overall, not that great. The animation is pretty good compared to most of Hanna-Barbera's output, but can get a little squishy at times. (Looking at you, Glenn Kennedy) Also, Jeff Bergman's voices for George, and Mr. Spacely sound just a tad weird compared to George O'Hanland, and Mel Blanc's voices. Yeah, He was just starting out, and had to fill in the gaps after O'Hanland, and Blanc died in the middle of production, but he just sounds weird, and obvious. The plot does seem like something we've seen a million times before, and is derived from it's usual formula, but they could've done something better with it. The CGI was kinda nice for it's time, but looking at it now, is Dreamcast level quality in terms of presentation. Also, The Grungies are just another version of Orbity, but cranked up to a thousand. Finally, Tiiffany wasn't terrible as Judy, but she's no Janet Waldo, and this didn't do her any favors. (Especially when she costarred with Debbie Gibson in an Assylum movie) That's my two cent on the movie.

I had said in Animat's Hanna Barbera Lookback that I felt bad George Jetson was always getting the worst of the comedy. Because of this, I actually felt relieved that George was allowed to get this promotion. But even there, it still felt like George was still being abused. Also, I know already that multiple people are going to disagree with me, but I actually liked Tiffany Darwish's performance as Judy Jetson. In the television project, Janet Waldo just made Judy sound like another woman in her 30's. In this movie, Tiffany Darwish made Judy sound more like an actual teenager. I actually don't understand why Tiffany Darwish is getting so much hatred from this movie. Hanna Barbera fans say this was a betrayal to the Jetsons' legacy and to Janet Waldo herself; so how come they don't complain about Patric Zimmerman being the new Elroy voice after Daws Butler's death? By the way, I also like Patric Zimmerman better as Elroy. As for the ending of this movie, it was pretty emotional, which I loved, but I just wish the Jetsons could have stayed in the neighborhood. I saw that the television series had already ended, so there was no reason for them to go back to the old plot of the series. Ultimately, I suppose the one good reason for people to have for despising this movie is because they did not see the series. If they have seen the series, they will feel relieved to see George's life finally improving and they will wish the ending could be different. Therefore, they should like it. If they have not seen the show, then yes, they will hate it. I guess before one ever goes to watch Jetsons the Movie, they MUST see the television series first.

You are not the only one who enjoyed Tiffany's performance. I enjoyed it too but to be fair to Janet Waldo, she was good too. Heck, Waldo could still do the Judy voice many years later. But I agree that Tiffany made Judy sound more like a teenage and I don't think that she should have gotten all the hate she got. It wasn't her fault for what happen to Janet Waldo. If anyone should point a finger at someone, they point it out Universal Studios. They were the ones that wanted to replace Janet with Tiffany because they thought that Tiffany would bring in more money. While I do feel sorry for what happened to Janet Waldo, I did love Tiffany's performance. Plus I think that she is a great singer. Heck, Tiffany is still singing and releasing albums to this very day.
@Missourifangirl7789

Plus if I might add, there are people who have watched the original cartoon series but don't like the movie. I remember reading that when this movie was coming out and fans (mostly the older fans of the series) found out that Janet was being replaced by Tiffany, they were upset. Plus I think that most didn't even see the movie at all after what happened to Janet. Heck, even some big Jetsons fans don't like the film. But as for me, the movie made me into a Jetsons fan. It made me want to watch the original series. If it wasn't for the movie, I wouldn't be the huge Jetsons fan that I am today. Heck, I wouldn't be a fan of Tiffany if isn't wasn't for the film.

Now I can understand where the Hate for The Jetsons came from. I mean I liked the show for what it was when was younger but looking back it and the movie they made just to end it off, it really doesn't hold up well. Sheesh....I never thought it was this bad.

to answer your question why you didn't think to put it on the top 10 worst films based on a cartoon, it's probably because the films you had on the list were required to either be fully live action or mostly live action

Full disclosure but I never actually watched the original Jetsons show. So I only had this movie which was probably the first movie I watched as a kid. Loved it then, saw it randomly in a bargain bin years later and now own it out of nostalgia. But man was it painful to watch it as an adult. If it wasn't for my nostalgia I would have given it away by now. But it's fine for a quick easy guilty pleasure watch when I'm sick I guess.

Damn dude, you're way too harsh on Judy. She's actually one of the only parts of this movie I give a crap about. I just didn't like most of the other characters. Tbh, I bought it on DVD and studied it for the scenery and subplot. As a kid, I remember hating that it was so much about George. I didn't care at all about George. I related the most to Judy, moving to a new place and looking for love. I could get behind even Elroy making a new friend and adjusting to a new school. George and Jane aren't interesting characters to me, like... at all. Rosie's pretty cool, and even Astro the Dog is alright. But they focused so much on the blandest characters possible. I'd watch the hell out of a whole movie about Judy and Apollo Blue. I don't even care. I want to see more of those two being cute together, and the hologram garden/nature zone.

This review is insanely harsh my guy, maybe since I liked it as a kid my nostalgia is softening my criticism of it but it's nowhere near bad enough to be considered "worst of all time" at anything. The way they treated Judy's original voice actress was inexcusable, but that's less about the movie itself and more about the studio being dicks (unless you think Tiffany did SO bad that it ruined the film, to which I disagree). The animation was fantastic for the time and the fact it hasn't aged well doesn't negate that, I mean, Jurassic Park's CGI looks abysmal compared to Infinity War but that doesn't mean it was poorly done. The animation in this movie was great. I agree the plot was a little safe and simple, and the environmentalist message was far from subtle, but I don't think it's fair to say the story was complete garbage either. It was just a run of the mill Jetsons story, I won't give them points for being supremely original but for the most part the stuck the landing IMHO. My rating would be more like this... Story 5/10 Animation 9/10 Characters 7/10 Overall 7/10, I could even accept someone saying 6, 4 just seems immensely harsh. Go watch the Tom and Jerry movie if you really wanna see an animated train wreck.

I've started to realize recently that when it comes to certain films, especially ones that I watched as a kid, I'm rather easy going when I review them. I don't judge them too harshly and prefer to look at them piece by piece and judge them by their individual parts rather than as a whole. I can see now that this film to other fans of animation isn't really all that great, and can even be cringe-inducing. And I agree that it isn't the best movie. But I do consider it a special and unique sort and style of film that ought to be experienced at least once, due to its unique visual style, its amazing pop-song and orchestral soundtrack, and for the final performances of both Mel Blanc and George O'Hanlon. By the way, George was actually suffering from his first stroke at the time they were recording the dialogue for this film, and so apparently the recording directors had to feed him his lines by reading the script to him, and then he'd recite it back with the best performance he could give. And honestly, you would never guess he was having to do that. I'll agree, there's something a bit off about his performance, but anyone could chop that up to age more than anything. And I actually thought Mel did a fantastic job considering his age. He even screams at the top of his lungs a few times. That can't be easy to do when your in your 70s.

FilmmakerJ This is another one of those movies that… whatever. It may not hold up if you watch it as an adult, but as a little kid, I watched it over and over and over and over again, and I loved it. That's the way I'll always remember it, the way my very young mind interpreted it, who cares how it seems now to my adult mind?
@FilmmakerJ
@FilmmakerJ 9 жыл бұрын
Josh The Josherian Depending on the film, other people might care if you watch something at all. But when it comes to how you personally perceive it, no one else cares how your younger self saw it or how your adult self sees it. That's all your own personal decision. So it's completely pointless to say "Who care's how it seems now to my adult mind" because no one really does. And if you personally don't care about it, then that's fine. In my case though, I have to care sometimes because movie-making is my job, and thus I have to understand what makes a movie good and what makes it bad. In the case of "Jetsons: The Movie," it has a lot of flaws, which AniMat has pointed out, but it also has a lot of charm to it that I cannot ignore. And in fact, I actually find certain parts of this film even MORE charming and awesome than I did when I was a kid. So my adult mind is actually getting far more enjoyment out of the experience.

I have fond memories of this movie from when I was a kid. I find this movie very entertaining to watch despite what the ratings have to say. I went out and bought a copy and watch it every night! It's one of my favorite movies to watch. I also like the jetsons tv show as well. My favorite character is George Jetson cause he's the lovable goofball in the show. I've always liked the jetsons and always will to this day, that includes the movie.
