Light-Tec Information
Two fluorescent 5500K lights in the bottom and the back of the large light box are controlled with a single switch, and the bright interior side panels and door provide the perfect reflective surfaces to compliment the diffused lighting. Two openings allow the user to take photographs from multiple angles within the jewellery photography lightbox, either from the top or from the front. For convenience with placing the jewellery into box, the front magnetic door and the top hatch can be opened and removed easily. Along with the jewellery photography light box, you will find separate LED lighting attachments perfectly suited for the photography of precious gems and stones. I bought the Gem Light box recently (used Affirm to break it into affordable payments) and I love it. I don’t have too much luck using their app-the photos seem over exposed and grainy, but using my iPhone camera they turn out amazing. Great review!

I also bought the gem light box, I use there app with iPhone 12 Pro, my videos have a buzz effect when taken, agree with you to get the white background there over exposed

These are both really expensive - several hundred dollars. While I can't say they aren't worth it, there are many lightboxes available from online retailers with built-in LED lighting and accessories such as infinity backdrops for $25-$100 that can be used to take excellent studio-quality product photos. A few dollars more will get you ring, earring and necklace displays. Budget-minded jewelers should know that there are inexpensive alternatives that can be used to produce professional results.

I agree with you Bruce. You don’t even have to spend a single cent if you take lifestyle shots outside using props and daylight. These two light boxes, as I stated, are the most popular lighting boxes and I was simply comparing them. My time is money and I don’t have time to mess about getting the lighting right and adjusting white balance and exposure in photoshop, then cropping etc. I just want to take the photograph and upload it straight away. And with these boxes you can do just that.

@@dstockbridge1 I got www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07SSX7457/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 for $20 and it works fine for me and my camera and the size of things I photograph. My smartphone does white balance and pixlr.com is a free online photoshop clone with lots of online youtube video support and tutorials for any cropping and touchup work you might need to do. I would recommend you search your favorite online vendor for light box, consider what camera or phone you have and its capabilities, and the size of objects you want to shoot and return policies to see what might work best for you. @Deanna Andrade The best light source for faceted stones, especially with high RI such as diamonds and moissanite, is LED or Halogen, which most light boxes have, and a short video with the piece on a revolving stand is better than a still photo.

Quick query Andrew, how can we use the light box to shoot the earrings? It's easy for a ring or necklace, but for earrings normally you need to hang it up. So seems difficult to shoot earrings with only white background. Any experience to share around this? Thanks.

Got the GemLightbox with me and have tried multiple smart phones including iPhone 11. The videos are absolutely perfect However, the still images are fading/blurry when zooming in. Any solution for this ? Because on the e-commerce website the product zooming in functionality needs enabled.

As soon as you zoom the image is not as sharp because Temne phone has a digital zoom which is not the best as the image degrades the more you zoom. Best use a DSLR if you want to do that because the zoom lenses are optical

@@Atthebench Thanks Andrew for taking time to answer this. With the DSLR the draw back is you cant use the mobile Application and so not able to get benefit of the lightbox environment or effects. Is there a way to bridge the gap ??

@@claudiasanjorge4234 Thanks Claudia for your response. In fact we order a Macro lens from Amazon and tried it already but its not helping either. Also, with DSLR cameras the light effect we used to get from the App is not coming up and so the result is not satisfactory. I think the GemLightBox App only captures 300dpi images only which should be of higher resolution.

@Deanna Andrade When it comes to taking videos through GLB and the App it is amazing but for the still photography it is turning out to be a dead investment unless someone has a work around for that as well.

I bought a light-tec (the smaller version) a few years ago and was quite disappointed with it, especially for the price. It found it took a lot of work to get a half decent photo and then time spent editing it in photoshop, I also found that it would wash out colours, especially on coloured gems. As you said, the large opening on the front does require some customisation to cut down reflections. One of the things I did find frustrating is that the base of the light tec box (where you put the jewellery) is lower than the opening and this made it more difficult to get good front on shots, especially with a traditional camera due to the size of the lenses, but this isn't as much of an issue with smartphone cameras. Great comparison video and the Gem Lightbox is definitely an interesting option.
